Proudly presented by Elwood Sailboarders, The ZU Boardsports, Severne and Windsurfing Victoria, King of the Bay is the search for The King (or the Queen) of the Bay.

R you ripping in 25+ knot Bay conditions with a combination of aerials, wave-rides and freestyle than you could be the new King for 2014 ! But if flippin' aint your thing, don't worry as we will have two divisions. As long as you can give it a crack in 25 knots, the event is for you !

You can also win a 75% carbon Severne rdm Gorilla masts with two years unlimited warranty in The Go-Hard Go-Rilla part of the comp. The highest Jump of the day (landing not necessary) will win the mast. We will also award a slab of beer for the best double forward attempt!

The King of The Bay waiting period has started and will end 31st March. Conditions have been epic lately so better sign up now at the Elwood Sailboarders Facebook page and "attend" the event.

www.facebook.com/events/546659008757064/

Let's go Nuts !!!

Competition Format

Briefing time to be nominated when event is called on FB, email, seabreeze etc. This will be between 5-6pm on a weekday and after noon on a weekend. The official decision to run KOTB will not be decided until the briefing. It will only be run when the conditions are extreme. Every entrant must sign a wavier form. Entrants signing the wavier form agree on the following;

You enter entirely at your own risk. This is a competition in extreme conditions that could ultimately result in severe injury or death.

One open division.

Competitors will be split into Group A and B. The groups shall be divided so the best windsurfers evenly split into two groups (i.e. don't have all the best guys in one group) Conduct two separate Expressions Sessions for Groups A and B which last 20mins each. During each of the expression sessions, we would request people not in sailing in the heat to sail 250m upwind or downwind of the competition area or assist in judging (refer to next section for judging criteria). Depending on number of entrants, the top 4 or 5 from Group A and B will proceed to the final. One final with 8 to 10 competitors of 20mins to determine KING OF THE BAY! The final will be judged by the ZU representatives with a scoring sheet.

Judging Criteria

Expression Sessions

Expressions sessions will be judged on who is the most dynamic, courageous and best sailor. We are also looking for variety as well (not just one manoeuvre). The top sailors from the expression session will be decided from a general consensus of the spectators that is not sailing and the ZU representatives. The ZU representatives will have the final decision on who should proceed into the final.

Jumps must be performed in the jumping zone (basically between the beach and a bit beyond the yellow pole). This is where the waves are and the biggest jumps will occur. The judges are not expected to see a jump done miles out to sea.

Final

The Final will be judged on best 2 jumps (10 points each with a potential maximum 20 points). There will be 3 judges for the final. We are looking for big extreme manoeuvres and variety. Someone who does two massive forwards should not score higher than someone who does a massive forward and a backloop for example. However, two massive forwards should score higher than someone doing a tiny forward and backloop. The KOTB champion should have shown the he/she has a big pair of bullocks and performed manoeuvres that are fearless. Freestyle manoeuvres will also be considered if its too hard to distinguish the KOTB.

HOWEVER, IF ANY WINDSURFER PERFORMS A DOUBLE LOOP IN THE EXPRESSION SESSION OR FINAL IS INSTANTLY AWARDED KOTB!!

Prizes

1. The KOTB Champion will get their name on the prestigious "King of The Bay Crown" (see pic)

2. A Severne Gorilla Mast for biggest jump. You do not require to land the jump.

3. Slab of beer for the best double forward attempt. Safety Items

The jumping zone can get congested. Please observe the water in front of you if you are going to jump and make sure it is clear. When sailing back into the beach, stay upwind of the jumping zone and any sailor who is jumping.
We request that everyone not sailing in a heat windsurfs 250m upwind or downwind of the competition area or spectates from the beach.

Post Event We will have an informal presentation at La Porchetta to crown the KOTB. We request everyone chip in $10 so we can buy some pizzas and a few jugs of beer.

Conditions have been epic lately so better check out the Elwood Sailboarders Facebook page and sign up now!

We have our eyes on Monday. Forecast looks promising. Professional forecaster Duncan Banks thinks the combination of the change + big high could bring us some action. Stay tuned!

KOTB is on!

Toot Toot
Our professional forecaster has been spot on and the change has hammered through for the annual 2014 King of the Bay (Proudly sponsored by The ZU) at Pookipa Beach Park this afternoon. Start making arrangements to leave work early to get down to warm up for what should be an awesome fun event for everyone.

Conditions for the event are as follows;
1. Registration 4:30 ? 5:15pm at the grass area between Cole and Head Street. Look out for the ZU guys. Everyone competing must sign a wavier form.
2. Briefing @ 5:15pm at Pookipa.
3. First Expression session at 5:30pm.
4. The event format will be the following (subject to number of entrants)
? 2 x 15 min expression sessions
? 1 x 15 min semi final
? 1 x 15 min Final.
5. The judging criteria will be finalised in the briefing
6. Presentation and pizzas afterwards at ESC (destination to be confirmed). We will ask everyone to chip in some money to buy some pizzas at the local La Porchetta.
Prizes
1. Awesome Severne Gorilla Mast (sponsored by Severne) for the biggest jump (does not have to be landed).
2. Slab of beer for best double forward attempt. The rumour is out there have been a few sailors attempting doubles.
3. KOTB Crown to the WINNER. Last year was Flacky. Who is it going to be this year???

For the running of the event, can we please ask all windsurfers who are free sailing to keep away from the competition zone (directly out the front of the poo pipe). It does get quite congested in this area and we want to make it as safe as possible for everyone participating in the event.

We also encourage everyone to bring cameras, video recorders and go-pro?s. We would love to get as much footage as possible and put together a video. Jodie Stevenson has also very kindly accepted to photo the event and it would be fantastic to have someone film it. All we need is a video camera and there will be plenty of people there to operate it.

Hope to see everyone this afternoon.

Great turnout (30+ sailors) but unfortunately Huey didn't come to the party as you can see. We will wait for another 30+ forecast and try again. We will keep you posted ! Thanks again to Elwood sailboarder's for their support and hosting the Event.

Worse than that... it peaked at 4pm, but dropped to an arvo min at event time/6pm, before picking up again. Huey, he's a cruel cheeky bastard!

BTW: was kind fun watching anyway - was on my bike riding home from work with @djwally (days like that you need someone to draft off) and we watched jealously from ontop the poo pipe for half an hour.

What's going to happen to KOTB, given the new swimmers only zone Parks Victoria has created in front of the poo pipe?
