Hi all. I'm visiting NZ (North Island) from beginning to mid March. Which are good spots for riding small swell (max shoulder high)?
Also for the spot(s) mentioned what would be the best forecast site/app?

My itinerary is still completely blank. Should I head east, west coast, north, south?
Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

Taranaki region would be my go to. 270 degrees of wind options within an hour and amazing easy waves. Base yourself at Oakura and explore up and down coast from there.

there is a big scene north as well, check in with Nick at underground surf for advice and/or gear.

Taranaki is a fairly rough, rocky and unforgiving coastline for winging. If you know what you're doing in waves, it's the place to be. If you are not an expert just yet, I would recommend Wellington. Check this spotguide here for an overview of where to wing in NZ waternomads.co.nz/best-places-to-wingfoil-in-new-zealand/ or sign up for the Detailed Spotguides on our website for even more info. Enjoy NZ and feel free to reach out for any questions!

I'd head north of Auckland for warm sunny conditions and a load of locations to choose from, particularly Whangaporaoa peninsular and north of there. South of Auckland I'd go Raglan west coast or roll the dice for east coast Bay of Plenty and Hawke's Bay, just about anywhere. Just got back from a visit to Hawke's Bay and there's so many awesome wing-foiling locations but you'd be hard pressed to find anyone else out. It's a warm spot like Nelson in the South Island, picks up a lot of sun and grows loads of yummy fruit.

What's the sea temp like around Auckland area in end of Feb/beginning March? I'm guessing a wetsuit is needed? How thick?

It's pretty warm... i prefer being a little on the warm side but that time of the year i'll usually go out in board shorts and a rashguard unless there's a strong wing with some windchill kicking in in which case i'll throw on a windbreaker.

I'll second this, as I was told the same thing and thought they meant kiwi warm and packed my steamer anyway, but it's legit boardshorts temp.

If you do head down to the South Island make sure you go and check out Lake Clearwater.

www.lakeclearwater.co.nz

great shallow lake 5km long 1km wide and great for wind. Accommodation is in holiday homes around the lake. Mazda CX5 in chch for our international guests wanting to use the house on the lake :)

All good suggestions. IMO Taranaki has it all, from protected flat water at the port to epic waves and DW sessions.
Come say hello if you make it this way. Our local Telegram group ( t.me/FoilTaranaki ) has 50+ members giving each other live wind reports, organising sessions, etc.

Not the best conditions. Pretty light wind (9-15 knots). But with my mid length and a 6m wing I could have a session.

Can anyone give advice pls on where to head in/around Ragland with these winds? Incl where I can pull up with my campervan?

Thanks all!

Ps. Shame Taranaki didn't make the family itinerary!

Manu bay and the kite beach (roughly where the spot on the map is). The kite beach is best on neutral and outgoing tide if there's an onshore wind. Tide can be very strong at the kite beach so just be aware of that
Manu bay may not work if the wind is too south.

Stop in at Adrenaline Alley and chat with them if you have questions/need gear.
if the wind works, Raglan is awesome!
