Aussie Team Proves Unbeatable in SUP Worlds
Talk about a contrast! From Fiji in 2016, to Denmark in 2017, This years 2017 ISA World Paddleboarding championship was held in two locations - Vorup?r and Copenhagen. They call it 'Cold Hawaii', but last week in Denmark, Hawaii was nowhere to be seen in the standings. It was Australia who led the pack, for their fifth win in six years.
A strong performance from Australia's prone paddlers sealed the deal for Team Australia at the 2017 relay race in Copenhagen, with Lincoln Dews, Jordie Mercer, Lachie Lansdown and Terrene Black making up the dream team. Untouchable for 5 of the 6 years stand up paddling has been in the ISA Worlds, the Aussie team had just enough points to win over France and New Zealand overall, with France actually winning more points in the stand up paddling events than Australia.
Yet again, Shakira Westdorp dominated the wave event like she did last year in Fiji. It only took two waves and she sealed the deal in perfect offshore conditions. Netting a combined 2-wave score of just over 11 points, the other girls just couldn't find the waves they needed to get close, and a notably stoked Shakira took her second win with ease.
In the Mens BOP style final, it was a nail-biter between local Casper Steinfath and Connor Baxter, with Mo Freitas and Lincoln Dews putting up a good fight during the first half of the race. Tiny runners kept the front pack well ahead of the rest, and despite a few falls, it was a tiny runner which allowed Mo Freitas to catch Connor right at the end. Check it out below (skip forward to 2hr 30min) to watch just how close it was, with some exceptional commentary too!
