German SUP World Cup Cancelled

In the second major league event to be cancelled this week, Germany's SUP World Cup in Fehmarn has been cancelled due to lack of funding three months before the scheduled dates.

The pictures were spectacular from Germany, offering a truly unique backdrop to stand up paddle racing. It was held in the middle of the city, in a choppy and windless river surrounded by apartment blocks and boardwalks. All the pro’s went, Kai Lenny and Connor Baxter were huge advocates of the event, and backing it were stand up paddling's biggest names…

But sometimes the sponsors just can’t keep ponying up cash for the same old event, like the scenario with Camp David, the 2014 events primary sponsor who chose not to renew their contract with the World Cup organizers for 2015. Despite being part of the Stand Up World Series, the German SUP World Cup was independently organized, leaving funding and procuring new sponsors in the hands of the locals.

Standing in it’s shadow is the new Euro Tour, an 8 race series across 6 straight weekends in May-June. Some say it’s the answer to Europe’s disorganized racing schedule, and it might even settle the debate on board sizing which is still raging between paddlers in European clubs.

For paddlers who were booked in to compete in the event, nothing else has been announced in place of it, but at least the event organizers gave 3 months notice! Something will take it’s place though, and whichever event it is will enjoy the addition of some pretty famous paddlers!
