Gold Coast SUP Breaking New Ground
After years of testing and prototyping, last year Gulliver released a range of super short high performance SUPs (V-BOX and Gambler).
The boards went viral leaving some brands scratching their heads after a video of team rider Shannon Porche riding a V-box whilst wearing a rotating head camera that swung around in circles above his head which gives amazing 360 degree views of the board and rider.
Gulliver has also christened its newly released Race SUP (Booth 2) with an important win by team rider Michael Booth in Australia’s premier down wind event, the 12 towers. Booth on his new signature model dominated the world class field including team riders representing the biggest brands in the world.
Damien Gulliver, managing director commented saying “we knew had great board in the Booth 2. We have attracted an amazing team of experience to help grow the brand. Gulliver Sport is in a continuous process of research and development on its products and it’s great to see the team’s hard work now paying off with a big win like that. I think this really sets the stage for the brand and for Michael who has only just started racing in this sport and is yet to demonstrate his true potential”.
Due to the dominance of the major brands, the Gulliver group have found it challenging to penetrate into the global market.
After almost a decade of growing the brand and improving methods of manufacturing and distribution Gulliver are at the point of breaking into this market, and are now selling in USA, Japan, NZ, New Caledonia in addition to the Aus. market.
Gulliver is confidently expecting the tag as Australia’s premium SUP brand with plans to move into Chilie this month and expand into Europe by the June. Gulliver is owned by GC Watersports who have recently taken over surf lifesaving brand Xcel surf craft as well.
Taking the limelight in the elite racing SUPs is Gulliver Sales Manager and team rider Michael Booth who is moving ahead in the equally in the corporate world as well as with his athletic pursuits. Booth is already an elite kayaker and has now turned his attention to the SUP racing world.
In early April this year, Booth blitzed a class lineup in the Gold Coast 12 Towers Race which is the premier race on the east coast of Australia. Then only a week ago, he travelled to New Caledonia and won comfortably in the 12’6” as well as the 14’ classes.
The Gulliver team and Booth are now aiming their sights on the pinnacle of SUP racing, the Carolina Cup Graveyard Race to be conducted at Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina, USA on Saturday, April 25 next. The lineup will be world class. It has been a juggle for Booth to juggle his corporate commitments with his sporting activities but the late decision to race was made to prove the point that a small Australian company can take on the world with good designs and a class athlete. Booth flies out to USA next Tuesday and will be lining up for the start at 10am on the 25th.
