Race the Lake of the Sky Highlights
SUP Limbo, Sup Cross, Long Distance Races, short courses, dogs on Sups, Kids on Sups, you name it - it happened during the 2015 event on Lake Tahoe - The Lake of the Sky.
6000ft above sea level, Lake Tahoe is one of the most unique and picturesque event locations in the world. Not only do the gorgeous surroundings take paddlers breath away, so does the higher than normal altitude! Featuring a handy shallow gradient near the shoreline, spectators could stand knee deep in the water and watch as the worlds best paddlers fought it out over a SUP Cross course, not a new style of racing, but certainly unique in this event!
To make starts fair, the SUP Cross began with a gate. Closed before the gun went, and opening simultaneously with the push of a button, these gates worked a treat and look great too! They're very similar to what you might see in a BMX race, or in the snowboarding 'Boarder Cross' events.
Also unique, were the SUP Limbo and high jump events for the young (and young at heart). You can imagine what these games were all about, with grommies leaping and limbo-ing foam padded noodles. Perhaps the most hotly contested event, Trent Carter walked away with the high jump title, and Jade (how-low-can-you-go) Howson the limbo prize.
Danny Ching took away the 'most inspirational' award for his win of the 5 Mile Race. Crossing the line well ahead of a three-strong pack including Aussie Kelly Margetts who all drafted each other across the finish, Danny Ching stroked his way five miles in just a smidge over one hour.
