Well, Covid 19 is probably the closest thing we'll ever see to a hollywood style Alien Invasion. Thank f#$k Covid 19 isn't an Alien Invasion because we'd all be f#$cked. I would have thought that the world would pull together to fight the pandemic. Wrong again. After working in 3rd world countries for nearly 20 years I was under the impression that Aussies were a cut above the rest when it came to pulling together to get the job done. WRONG WRONG WRONG. Social media is a great tool that can be used to make the world a better place but I also now see that it can be its downfall.

There is a lot of people out there doing their best to beat this pandemic and then there's these other idiots. Which camp do you reside in?

All you need is someone with a PhD in "Dumb F#$kery" spreading misinformation and you have what's going on in Australia and the world. When I saw the movie Contagion, the impression I got of the character played by Jude Law was, "That idiot is actually killing people". And now I'm seeing it being played out in real time.

Enough with the conspiracy theories and misinformation. Unless you know it kosher, don't repeat it. And give us a source for your information so we can make up our own mind.

One of my friends has kept saying for years the world is getting dumber. I now see how right he is. (source - facebook and seabreeze)

It reminds me of the joke about an Irishman who drowned in a vat of Guiness, it was said 'he fought the rescuers off bravely'.

I like Facebook for the info I get, I like the pages that interest me such as Raceboard Windsurfing or Cafe Racers and I get a stream of pics and posts and news related to those things. I also use messenger quite a bit for example my immediate family has a group chat that is really good to keep everyone in touch especially as my 5 kids are all older teens or young adults and I often don't see them for days at a time, then there is all the other group chats that are great for organising stuff like windsurfing sessions etc.

As to spreading misinformation, stuff you think is kosher maybe different to stuff other people think is kosher so suppressing free speech is a greater evil than allowing fools to have an opinion.

At least that's my opinion, which is different to yours. So perhaps you should not have started this thread as the info in it isn't kosher.

ps.... I think, on the whole, Australia has pulled together really well during this crisis, no where else I would rather be at this time.

Its coming.
Watched the first part of the pandemic doco on Netflix, seems just in bats there are thousands of viruses. Amongst all animals, millions.

Given there are parasites that take control of the host and make it a killing machine, and there are things that destroy brains and make animals like zombies.... BSE, Rabies....... I reckon the zombie virus apocalypse is just a matter of time really.

Yay.

(I loved this read a couple years back: www.nationalgeographic.com/news/2018/10/141031-zombies-parasites-animals-science-halloween/ )

I don't think free speech is a black and white issue and I welcome the silencing of extremist nutters, particularly if they are peddling dangerous wrongness.

Yep Cammd, as I said in my original post, social media is a great tool that can be used to make the world a better place, but with over 241,000 people already dead from Covid19, it would be better if people used social media to assist those trying to beat this Pandemic and not carry on with the Dumb F#$kery that makes the job harder for them and could result in more deaths.

My post is not about stopping freedom of speech, its about when Dumb F#$kery is not suitable. Unfortunately some people aren't aware that what comes out of their mouth is Dumb F#$kery. So next time you have something to post regarding the Pandemic, ask yourself, "Will this assist those trying to fight the Pandemic". It's really quite simple.

Yes, you can tell that you don't think its a big deal because you have been calling it that from day one. Its pretty obvious that you are trying to make out that its no big deal.... Sort of like saying 'you have a killer deadly flu that no one has immunity for'.... "yeah, I have had the flu before, why are you making such a big deal out of it".

I haven't actually read anything from you that makes me think 'its just the flu' though, as there are thousands of people dying from it, and if it were 'just the flu' then we would see exactly the same number as we do each year... but you keep forgetting that no one has immunity to this one and therefore it can spread quicker and affect people faster, and do more damage... but we keep hearing 'its just the flu'.

The definition of a pandemic means little, its the numbers that make the difference.

I see like log jam you still didn't get the previous point.

(If people have immunity for the regular old flu, why do they keep catching it and dying at an alarming rate, and why do we have to keep getting annual vaccinations?)

It's good that I've never made you think "it's just the flu" because that's never been my point or intention.

When *I've* mentioned the flu, it's been to compare the blas? attitude of one against the hysteria of the other, despite the latter not being as deadly as the former.

...aren't we supposed to have millions dead by now? Someone was supposed to get back to me in two weeks about that...

Just in case you've missed it -- I've never said "it's just the flu". You're picking an argument with the wrong person.

Now, my point this time was to point out to the OP that this isn't the first pandemic we've had, no need to go all hyperbolic on the hyperbole.

Okay, lets look at just part of your reply.

"(If people have immunity for the regular old flu, why do they keep catching it and dying at an alarming rate, and why do we have to keep getting annual vaccinations?)"

My understanding is that some of us do have immunity for whatever the current strain or strains of the flu are. Some of us had it last time, and some of us had a minor reaction to it earlier. 1 month, 12 months, who cares, someone will have immunity to it. There will be enough people in society that have had it, that it will not spread as quickly if no one had it at all and no one had immunity to it.

Now, add in the people that get the flu vaccination and assume that the strains they used for the vaccine happen to match the dominant one this flu season.

Therefore we have a significant part of the population that are immune to the current flu. So the spread of this will be reduced purely because enough people will not be able to provide transmission.

Now compare it to Covid19 where no one has immunity, and it spreads between everyone that is exposed. Some will have minor symptoms, some will die. This ability to spread alone makes Covid19 more deadly than the regular flu if you assume that the viruses are equal in their ability to kill someone.

There's an article on news.com.au talking about Sweden and the death rate that they have seen from Covid19. You can try and dance around it and say its the same as the regular flu, but the numbers suggest something much different.

I must admit that if you are not trying to make out that this flu 'SARS-covid-2' is less deadly than the regular flu, then its true, I don't get your previous point.

I will go further and suggest that the 2 in the name means nothing of any substance just that its a related virus. It doesn't downplay the danger any.

Would you prefer a pandemic where you can easily screen people at airports and other locations with temperature scans, or one that doesn't always show up straight away as a fever? If that's not clear, SARS was detectable in most cases, whereas this time round this variant is not so detectable.

As always, if we can't argue the point over 'stuff', what's the point. Its only a forum for discussion...

No they didn't. It was the Church that insisted he shut up.

You're
You're right of course, it was the Church. Or rather clerics within the Church. The leading authority figure of the day.

That's why the wealthy supported the Church. It's why religion was supported from day dot. A brilliant tool to control the proletariat.

Not much has changed. The Church no longer has anywhere near the same influence over narrative. That's been supplanted by the corporate media. Who all sing from the same song sheet on most issues other than when they're being usefully divisive like during "democratic" elections.

People like David Icke are a product of the corporate media.

If the corporate media adhered to attempting to get to the truth instead of driving agendas people would have no reason to seek out alternatives.

I'll give you an example. There are very many.

Icke was writing about Jimmy Savile's pedophilia in the early 1990's.

It wasn't until after his death in 2011 that the subject was discussed in the mainstream and then only with kid gloves. The BBC knew about it but continued to employ him giving him access to kids for years.

Is it any wonder why very many people have no faith in the mainstream anymore?

Is it any wonder why people look to alternative sources?

There are doctors all over the world speaking out about the "Covid 18" pandemic. Many of their interviews are being erased from platforms.

Why?

I know why.

So does David Icke.

"say its the same as the regular flu"
There you go again -- that's not what I have said or am saying now.

The seasonal flu infects millions, hospitalizes a couple of million and kill a half million or more people per year. PER YEAR.

Nobody freaks out, nobody locks down anything, it's tough to convince people annual vaccinations are necessary. People scoff at the flu. Probably explains why it's so widely spread, and despite its low R0 and CFR, why it takes out so many people ... because so many more people get it.

Compare that reaction to this version of SARS. See the difference? Aren't you puzzled by how indifferent people are to flu deaths, but wail and gnash teeth at the idea of reopening schools?

That's my point.

"immunity"
It wears off. The vaccines are best guess for what this season's mutations are going to be. It's an attempt to maintain a level of herd immunity so that it isn't spread as widely. And yet ... see above.

"no one has immunity"
How do you know? Having an infection without showing symptoms is common.
theconversation.com/infected-with-the-coronavirus-but-not-showing-symptoms-a-physician-answers-5-questions-about-asymptomatic-covid-19-137029

"Sweden"
Not going there, too complex. CFR is low compared to the global rate...but.

"just that it's a related virus"
It doesn't downplay the danger, it highlights to the OP that this is not the first pandemic we've had in the last 20 years, and this isn't even the first version of SARS-covid, so the hyperbole isn't necessary. It's relative.

"Would you prefer"
You are forgetting about MERS, bird flu, swine flu... In our part of the world, we have a lot more issues with those and so have had temperature scanners at airports for decades. Relevance.

IIRC you're looking at that study with a very small number of people who were infectious were asymptomatic, and decided that it applies to everyone? That's just a faulty conclusion. See above.

But ... what's your point there?

@ kamikuza . Just out of curiosity, what do you think the number of deaths caused by covid 19 would have been so far, IF China didn't lock up Wuhan and if the world didn't have all kinds of restrictions, social distancing closures of schools and non essential institutions and businesses , traveling etc.etc ......... ? Same or similar to common flu perhaps?

China didn't though did they? That horse had already bolted.

CFR is higher, so is R0. So higher, probably. You want an exact number?
