For a second I had this doubts: to post the topic in Heavy Weather or General (?)So we have now an opportunity to capture the "best wind" ever recorded on SB Graphs.Anybody sailing now with 0.5 m2 sail or 0.25 kites in Townsville?
This one is also not our usual chart

What is your highest max gust prediction Macro?

Queensland will kick it's arse I hope. A Debbie never hurt anyone. Go QLD and be safe.

All the best for the night ahead.

Now if you could install few wind turbines on Hamilton Island we could power up whole Perth for a year on single cyclone....

Let's imagine what 2.5-meter sea surge may mean for local residents...

I'm on Hamo at the moment winds are gusting to 64knots averaging 55knots at the airport pretty sure it's higher up on the ridge where we are
Island is in lockdown ...
Couldnt help myself had to have a few peeks outside " just to see what it feels like"
the wind is obviously strong but the debris ( mainly vegetation) flying around is what has surprised me.

Water was getting high already.

78 knots gusting to 102 at the moment .... It's very very loud.
our building is concrete and you can feel it shudder in the gusts.

That beach at Hammo will have some awesome breaks with a bit of swell.

We are running out of colors here.
If Brown was good for 45 knots there is definitely not the same at 125 anymore...
Maybe Black? we know what its means
Blue ? Mean you are flying, not sailing anymore
Gold ? Pissing your pants ( or boardies - kiters)

Debbie is relatively small but pull strongly

Good point. Surely over 100 knots should be black arrows

I have a question for the sailors and sail boat owners out there.
im a QLDer and been through a few cyclones including marcia cat 5 and currently 400ks South of this girl ,no threat here just wind and rain and wish the best for my northern mates.
question is about the sail boats moored in the harbours at Mackey and Whitsundays with their sails up.
if I was mored beside them I'd want them down. No probs now all sails blown off.
So ,can you cut them down?
are they allowed to leave them up while moored or vacated the boat.
Just smells of insurance fraud to me.

Just read a news link- just hit 146knots (270kms) So that's low Cat 5.

Ref
Cyclone Debbie's eye wall reaches north Queensland coast bringing winds up to 270kph

Cobra they would be furling headsails that are popular with cruising yachties. These sails roll or furl around the forestay, they would have been furled/rolled right in so the sail is wrapped around itself & are usually left like that when not being used. The strength of the wind has caused them to unfurl or roll out & flap away until being shredded.

Looks like the eye has passed Hamilton if the wind direction is any indication

I think Ive seen that before in high winds where the direction flips 180 degrees instantly. I'm pretty sure it was the weather vane getting flicked around the wrong way or something like that.
