There are some seriously naive and ill-informed statements in here and as usual Loggie is right up there with the front runners.

You need to train hard for a year and spent 40 days on the mountain acclimatizing before you attempt to climb it.

About 800 people per year attempt Everest and about 9 die.

People attempt it for the same reason you'd run an ultra marathon or solo-sail around the world - its just harder and more dangerous.

Only an insipid envious low achiever would scoff at people who push themselves to their limits in whatever their goals were.

Some pretty naive comments about the Sherpas in here too btw.....

You really think climbing Mount Everest is harder
than sailing solo non stop and unassisted around the world? Tens of thousands of people have climbed
Mount Everest. Less than 300 have sailed solo non stop and unassisted around the world.

^^^ I think you've mis-interpreted the post you quoted? Anyway it's not tens of thousands but about 4500 have summited Everest.

Nearly 300 people have sailed solo, non-stop, unassisted around the world. Less than 100 have yo-yo'd 9 yo-yos at once.

Maybe climbing Everest is more appealing.

In Europe they just tunnel up through the middle of the mountain and run a train up there. Eiger, Mont Blanc. Go for a ride up. Have a coffee. Maybe fly down on a paraglider.

Yes., I like the idea of the tunnel drilled to the top. Nice normal pressure hotel on the top. Then for a few minutes, we could jump out to breath fresh air at the top of the world.

With Mt Everest being in the news a bit because of the number of people climbing there, is it that much of an achievement?

Do people care about this anymore?

If you knew someone that climbed Everest with or without oxygen would you really care?

For me, its interesting to hear about the journey, but other than requiring a fair bit of training, it sounds like actually getting to the top is a bit hit and miss, and very much depending on whether you have lucky weather and oxygen.

Has anyone here climbed it?

What is it that people want out of this sort of thing? Something to talk about? Something to make them special amongst their friends?

I just don't understand it.

Yes it is still a big deal, people die there regularly.
I never heard of people dying regularly at other sports, for example race car driving.

Just think about how many climbers there are in the world. Airplane prices are way down in the last decades.

No wonder so many people want to and are now able to climb Everest.

After all it have only been around 4000 people who climbed Everest.
6 out of 100 people die trying to reach the summit. So yes.. still a big deal.

Since 2003 there where Over 8000 summits of Mount Everest. So over other years there would indeed be tens of thousands. www.google.com.au/url?q=https://www.alanarnette.com/blog/2017/12/17/everest-by-the-numbers-2018-edition/amp/

Stay at home and live a boring and adventure less life? I don't think so. I would rather live a short adventure filled and exiting life. Than live a long boring life where non of my dreams are fulfilled. Just my opinion

Surprisingly he doesn't have any windsurfers listed. Don't Canadians windsurf?
