I'm no expert, or a shark lover, but it seems pretty obvious that wasn't a shark attack. Pretty sure sharks know what they are doing in the water and Mick would be bleeding if that's what the shark wanted. It had plenty of time and opportunity to attack if it wanted

Could be one on the run from that cage diving circus.
Do they attack ? Or just lazy swim up to the bite and grab it ?

I don't really think the word attack is correct for any of these interactions. If the shark was to have attack in most peoples eyes it would have approached at speed and grabbed Mick. Thats how sharks attack, by using speed and surprise so as not to bring any harm to themselves in the process.

A incident like we just saw unfold live was what would be considered a exploration, but i believe it still would have resulted in a bite, IF Micks leg rope hadn't got in the way first. Many sharks will actually bump first to see what something is, then bite. GW's especially immature (under 3 mtr) will tend to be very curious creatures and often have a bite to determine what something is, similar to what a puppy would. Immature Great Whites don't have the jaw strength to eat mammals and will normally eat fish, until they grow the jaw strength. Either way the result on a investigory bite from any sized GW on human flesh will be catastrophic.

Any bite is an attack really. So in my opinion it was a foiled attack 100%. If it had simply been an interaction, it would have just swam past to have a look..

Mick is super lucky IMHO

Who gives a crap if it was an attack or not, how you feel if it was you?
Also know as "the bottom line".

Worthless debate.

Completely agree. Its media hype to just milk the most out of the story IMHO

(even if JB stated in a single post that is was not an attack, followed by "a foiled attack 100%") haha. I get where you're going with it though - must be Friday eh?

Maybe the shark was just mistaking mick for a dude in distress, ala this au.news.yahoo.com/man-drags-injured-hammerhead-shark-out-of-water-to-help-it-29012321.html in reverse.

I don't believe fanning punched that shark . he was sh.tting himself . ask anyone who dives regularly . he lied and now has to stick with his story . . in his defence he wouldn't have been thinking straight with all the adrenaline .. .

Spare a thought for the poor photographer left to swim in unaided. A lesson there for all of us, especially those involved in event organisation.

Well. ..
Has happened to me
Not a great white though
Was giving a kite lesson
Body dragging 100m+ off the shore in straight onshore Winds
I was holding onto the back of her harness
We were dragging ourselves way out, Then I'd let go
And get them to play with the kite to get an understanding of how the power zone worked and such
And i would swim in after
Then do it again
Like i said
We were about 100m out and this school of fish just went straight through us.
A second later i got belted from behind
Hit me just below the harness
And went down the back of my legs

She freaked about the fish
But i said nothing about what hit me
Kept calm
And said we are going to just drag on this time
Moving the kite from side to side without the erratic dives that i was getting her to do previously to get a feel for the power

I gota rather decent bruise over my right hip and gravel rash like scratches down the back of my legs

Many years ago my mate and I had a close encounter of the scared sh88tless kind with a vey large shark.
I was very shaken and it took me a long time to get back in the water. Obviously we weren't hurt.

A few years ago he was killed in a plane crash. Damn those statistics!
