^^ What you've said there supports what a mate found when he trialed one off a boat in a sharky area. Not one, but two sharks pounced on it within a minute of it hitting the water.

Aaah. But that anectdotal evidence doesn't get the same publicity.

Very scary.

On the plus side, I have a mate who reckons they attract them and then repel them when they get closer and laughs about the people surfing near him who will get taken. It is reassuring to know it will actually be him.

That is a great report, but it is long and confusing for sure.

Actually if you read page 49 it talks about the bait being further way then previous tests to the actual device. It also says that when closer it made a much bigger difference. So the way i read that is the last meter makes all the difference and that has been what i have actually read on testimonials for the product SHARK SHIELD. As for the the device attracting in sharks it simply doesn't have the power to generate any current more than about 15 meters and they say a shark will detect you from further afield than that distance anyway.

Having defended the product i don't like the Shark shield myself, but to be fair to the product i have read a lot of reports and spoken with a lot of users. One mis representation of all of these type of products is that it won't keep you safe surfing continuously with sharks present. They are designed to give you a option to retreat only once a shark has taken an interest in you.

At the end of the day the Surfsafe product IMHO is a great system and i support it fully. You do still need to remember though in the grand scheme of it all, we have lost more surfers this year from drowning and head injures and people don't wear helmets either.

It does make feel warm and fuzzy on a dark overcast day though and for that alone, I'm happy with my investment

I wear a helmet for exactly those reasons.

And my Uncle was taken on a bright blue spring day. As were others in the south west. Those "sharky" days we all quake over aren't any more sharky than last Sunday.

Surprised no one had mentioned this TED talk...

Seems there is at least some anecdotal evidence of stripes deterring sharks.
