Kiwi calls themselves by the name and proud of that.BTW I don't have the slightest idea where Old Zealand could be

I don't understand.
You don't want to call yourself an Aussie because you want more respect and yet you call yourself a Bananabender ?

If he /she is looking for more prestige - there is still room for improvement. Banana****er comes much more convincing and already slipped through my grammar censor checker undetected ( unlike bananabender that is a suspicious grammatical and logical concept.

Q, Why did the Irish banana factory go out of buisiness ?
A , cos they threw out all the bent ones .

I can see only opportunities for smart Irish. Plenty of jobs and employment for bananastraightneers (?)

See I told you they had to be bent.
Would not bring the Irish in to it . They laugh at us laughing at them while they make all the money.

Obviously.
I just read in English newspaper that AUSTRALIA spent 80 bln dollars on their frigates!AUSTALIA is just about to overtake Qatar as the largest liquid gas producer. Qatar receives 40 bln for gas every year and ranks as No1 richest country in the world per capita.
Australia has been paid 800 mln for the same amount of gas.
No wonder/surprise they call as all bananas

Yep. The only excuse could be that not Australians are pulling the strings. Whatever puppet you vote for, RC operator sit comfortably at the other end of the round or even flat globe. Sometimes I am even happy for Brexit to see how crowned Imporium could suddenly do on their own, while long bloodsuckers nipples milk deliveries finish suddenly. From this 30 bln budget, 80 Bln is already spent on jets and frigates alone to secure safe passage over the Chinese Sea for our Warcraft.

Unfortunately the mindset that we have in Australia has been ingrained in us over the generations. Look at what we see on TV ads, like the BCFefing ad which is totally cringeworthy .Yet they keep on expanding on it and repeating it endlessly . Surely people who fish are not the bozos depicted in this ad. Please tell me that we are moving on from this.

WOW, you guys sound like the fun police that like to push for things like kids not being allowed to build sand castles on the beach or kick balls or throw frisbees on the beach. The BCF ads are just a bit of fun, they are not telling you you should be a bozo like that, if that's what you think they are saying maybe you are the bozo and are taking life waaaay too seriously.
Relax a bit, live life without getting upset over stupid things. Don't really care what all you old PC fun police think, but the BCF ads rock.

Mate it's a fact of living in Australia. We're not renowned for culture. We don't even respect the oldest surviving culture in the world and it's ours to adopt and learn from if we want to - so how are we going to respect ourselves?

You are right no other self respecting nation self deprecates like we do. We almost take a lack of self-respect to a new level.

I mean we came up with the jingle Football, meat pies kangaroos and Holden cars FFS!

Actually the "Football, meat pies, kangaroos Holden cars" jingle was stolen from the USA where it was used to advertise Chevrolet - which kinda makes it worse!

Haha yep. Holden hasn't been Australian since 1931 anyway.

We didn't invent meat pies.

We didn't even invent footy.

We certainly didn't create roos either. In fact we spent a lot of time trying to eradicate the poor bastards.

We didn't even invent the pavlova.

Mate, even the flag is mostly not uniquely ours....

That leaves BCF ads.....and the Big Bogan.... Love the Big Bogan.

And it's a feature.

Making light of things, especially ourselves, is how a mind, even a collective mind, is able to handle all sorts of trauma thrown at it. It is the essence of mental resilience. It is not strength, it is flexibility. It is a form of stoicism. It's a survival mechanism.

It's what made The ANZACs such a respectable fighting force (really). She'll be right mate. Shaking the hand of a dead soldier sticking out of the trench wall. It's all a laugh. Being able to laugh at death itself, even. It's a joke all the way down.

Like I said, it's a feature.

That's bull**** promoted by film and those with no bloody idea.
ANZACS were/are easy going when the situation allows but are damm serious when on the front .
Back in the old days (70's) a Scot family moved in next door straight off the boat . He was ex army and introduced himself telling us that Australia House warned that the Australian at home is easy going and nothing like the one he knew from the armed forces .

Gross generalisation on your research pool of one person again. I see this all the time in my line of work. eg Situation student out of uniform so I pull them up and write them a detention slip. The standard answer is "But everyone is out of uniform". They are right in their mind because their close circle of friends is all out of uniform, but they are 10 students out of a cohort of 300 students (6 years = 1800 at school). So I say look around and show me someone else out of uniform, there are 500 students in the quadrangle area, they can only pick a few. This happens year after year and I am sure I could write a thesis on it.
One person saying something to you does not make it true. Australians are world renowned for being easy going that would be reflected in the army as well. Does not make them bad soldiers, as you said they are fearless and serious when needed.

So you agree with the above as being how Australian forces look upon death on the front. Hmm I know your profession thinks you stand next to god but I don't think so.
I think you also have watched too many war movies with Chips Rafferty starring although I will agree that Australians serving in WW1 were initially know for their insubordination ,which your confusing with easy going , but that changed as the war progressed as they became battle hardened.
Of course we're easy going but that does not mean we have to be disrespectful idiots.

... I don't understand the above replies; who is saying what to whom : \

Anyway, here's some interesting reading that aligns with what I've read elsewhere (but can't show you unless you come around to mine and I lend you some books, and make you a ripper coffee):

- forum.axishistory.com/viewtopic.php?t=174380
- historum.com/threads/allied-soldiers-whom-rommel-rated.25986/
- www.theaustralian.com.au/nocookies?a=A.flavipes

Without having the exact quotes to hand, Rommel also wrote about the Australians being 'emmensly big and powerful men' or something along those lines. From memory these were prisoners he was observing and I think he also noted their good spirits despite their predicament.

Morale goes a long way in a fight.

Yeah, it's a bit more than one person watching one movie, of course.

I'm a kiwi but growing up with my dad in the army we lived in Australia twice. The second time in Canberra where I did a lot more time on water and racing improved my windsurf skills. Was last in Brisbane in November.

My point being that ANZAC values & spirit is a strong bond.
Yes the media is shortening Australian to Aussie or Strala and generalizing a typical Australian.

Yes our countries are becoming more multicultural as our respective countries are desirable places to live. My personal opinion is slow down and fix the issues without having to squeeze more people and infrastructure in.

First world problems. Need to finish work - its getting windy.

Lastly NZ could still become a state of Australia but we would still want our All Blacks.
Peace out??????

Sure it's a feature but it's not unique to being Australian.

Surely you're not suggesting Australians have some hegemony over the concept of good humour, friendship and sheer bloody tenacity in the face of bad odds?

That's the issue, we think we are better at friendship than other people, so we call it "mateship". It's codswallop.

I think because we lack so much culture, we have to make it up. We have one of the oldest cultures right here and we have subconsciously adopted many of it's best attributes but we don't always realise what they are.

Basically we're quite insular and disconnected with reality sometimes.
