i have bought my son a stand up JetSki. It is 30 years old and was bought as a non running project. we have been through the ski, and rebuilt the engine. The ski is unregistered. How do we go about registering the ski once it is finished?
we bought the ski off gumtree and we have a hand written receipt from the seller. The ski has large numbers on each side which I presume is an old rego number, but has no modern hull I'd number. we want to do the right thing.

What state are you in? Might make a difference. JBshack might come along soon and help you out, but I think the first step would be getting a HIN, then registration.
I understand your prejudices, but there is room for all of us if the rules are followed, and I don't see many windsurfers at Millpoint road. I have ridden trail bikes with my son on organised events, but I cannot afford to get hurt with my workload, and I am not getting any younger. I had jetskis 30 years ago, and never had a complaint. They are hard work to ride, and it is a healthy hobby.
my boy is 19 now, and I am trying to do what I can to still interact with him. He is an apprentice, and I am still trying to teach him how to do jobs properly, hence buying a rebuild vintage ski project. For me these days, the thrill is is in the finding of the ski, locating parts and the rebuilding. Riding it will be left to him, though I will often be there.

Don't expect too much support jet ski dad, you're in a wind powered water sports forum after all. We've all had sessions soured by that guy.
As long as you're respectful and aware there's a 500m+ radius of noise pollution where you're ruining everyone else's day, you should be fine.
Stand ups are way cooler imho.. More skill required..
In WA you dont need to register jet skis,...... because they will never catch you!!
Good on you with the Father/Son project! I would suggest going down to the transport department and asking the question, you would presume they would have the answers you need?
Sounds like a good project. If it was Qld you would just take the details down to the dept of transport. I'm sure other states are similar. If you have lost the HIN or it was too old you can get one generated. If you make a trailer nowadays they don't even inspect, the onus that it was built to the specs is on you. Then just pay a stupidly large amount and you're away. Enjoy

seems like there are a lot of angry haters out there who have nothing better to do than to butt in on someone's innocent question.
If I was a swimmer, I wouldn't want kite or wind surfers anywhere near me. Likewise, we not intend to go anywhere near surfers.
we rode bikes, horse people hated us, though I never ever came across one of them, as we rode where we were allowed. If it gets them through the day, good luck to them.

i had a 30 year old jetski once, before i worked out that the wind was more reliable than the motor in a 30 year old jetski and i did not like standing at the ramp Knee deep in water, jumper leads in one hand airostart in the other. department of transport they can look up the hull no from the last rego if necessary. Traditional petrol motor is out of fashion this days. You should replace with electric one.To start with you could run 1 kw 24v trolling motor from BCF and your car battery or better two.Once you remove all mechanical gear and engine whole shell will be extremely lightweight.Since motors will be below 4 Hp you most likely don't need special registration and complicated paper work to register vessel.That could be good dad and son science program and big saving on fuel bills too.

We means me and you possibly, as those people on the movie above has some ideas already.
This days you could buy electric motor with power rating more then 2 kw per kg! But trolling motor have another advantage. Keeps your boat , jet ski shell moving at reasonably safe speed, cost few hundred dollars and you could have project done in few hours.
Then you could go fishing on converted electric jet ski everywhere - including fresh water dams.In fact I will not be surprised if plain trolling motor 1 kw will give your board -specifically wide windsurfing - planing speeds . When we did recent experiment with "scurfing" towing behind boat, you could easy stand on the board and keep line one hand.
No more then few kilo pulling force needed to plain behind boat on windsurfing board.Apply this same 1 kw motor to hydrofoil Moth and will be planning in no time at all.Then we could talk about cost jet ski vs. anything else. Who want to spend 20 -50 liters of petrol per hour ?
I think i would like one of those electric surf thingies,
but,
it would have to have throttle control and a lot more power so that it could be smaller and turn faster.
Then it would be awesome fun .
