Yeah, a canopy is on the list, wanted one for ages, next big purchase I reckon.
In regards to security, my mate said that canopies only protect against honest criminals, if they want in it's not hard. I just leave all of my gear in the tray and kites in the car. If they want to steal a couple of busted ass dinged surfboards and three-year-old harness and wettie they can have it.
Yeah you can get the classic only canopy for extra cab from www.arb.com.au/ I'm considering that option but all up a pickup it's $20k more than a van, plus harder to park in Sydney. If I was living in W.A. pickup would be a no brainer...
The VW Caddy maxi has 2,2m length storage but not an offroader.
I like the Mitsubishi Triton Club ute at the moment. Seems better equiped and more affordable than others.

Heard really good things about the new tritons. We had the old ones out at work and they literally fell to pieces. Told this to heaps of crew and they say the new ones aren't like the old, Soo much tougher.
Done the steep point run a few times in my triton pulling the dingy, not for the faint of heart in the summer, the triton came out flying colours, making the barge crossing when $100,000 buses didn't get there, tbh I get great pleasure in that
Aren't all new cars plastic fantastics!!
The MQ on did lift their game a bit for sure. But even the old ones went the distance.
That was when mine was a week old and i got stuck at Wilbinga. Since then i've done about 115k/kms in just over 3 years with a lot of 4wding, between S Bend and Murchison Station and a bit between Shark Bay and Exmouth. Other than the standard rear shocks leaking after getting stuck in the mud at Murchison, it hasn't fallen apart yet!
Of course i would have preferred a 79 series or Dmax but i couldnt afford either and while it may not be as nice as a ranger etc the triton has been great value for money and i'm sure a club cab would be no different.
Yeah you can get any 4wd places if you know what your doing. I suppose time will tell with our work vehicles, we are pretty hard on them.
im still running an old 2002 hilux and compared to my mates who have rangers, bt50 and tritons mine has held up the test of time much better. I suppose it all comes down to how much your look after it , regular service and repair stuff as it wears out. Definitely not bagging out anyone else's ride
Yeh no doubt that if the prices were on par or even 10-15 percent more I'd go a hilux or Dmax myself. But I couldn't justify the piece differential of 20- 40 odd percent. They aren't 20-40 percent that's for sure.
Then again if I was going around Australia across the top end etc ... reckon I could justify the extra money and would. Just for perceived longevity and reliability (get out there all you see is Toyota's)and access to parts for one.
But for the average dude with average 4wd ing Tritons a hard car to look past to be honest.
I asked all my 4wd buddies when looking and they all said "hilux, with this almost religious zeal in their eyes " the only justification I got was "tritons are cheap" and other dumb Answers like "hiluxes are better". When enquiring into evidence behind these limited answers you could tell there was more folk lore behind their answers than intelligent evidence.
ps as far as tracks go ... I know some fireman crew who actually just store hessian bags in their vehicle. Fill with sand if bogged apparently make decent tracks. I've got two but never used them as the triton just doesn't seems to get bogged ... except it does have some clearance issue. Worth a lift soon I reckon.
Hilux are overrated.
Hilux owners are the equivalent of Collingwood supporters scrape in a Grand final once every 20years then relive it for next 19.
Nah don't agree with that. They aren't over rated at all. I think the price differential has at least 10-15 percent of historically perceived quality over and above the reality. I do think a hilux will outlast a triton though in the long run given serious off road work. They are built stronger from what I see.
If they were say 10k above a similar specced triton id accept that.
Surprised nobody mentioned a Prado. Still the best for me. Comfortable, very capable in the sand, lots of space. Exy but holds its value too
Arg the problem with those longer trays is that not many do canopies for them. e.g. ARB only does them for double cab Triton :-(
I just missed one on gumtree for 800, spewing. They do come up from time to time though.
Asylum, just for your info, the dmaxs aren't priced far behind the tritons. I paid 28 for mine from a dealer with 70k on the clock. Just got to keep an eye out. One good thing about buying from a dealer was I paid an additional 2k for new car warranty for the life 5yer of the car load.
Paid for itself already, at 130k Ive just changed the cv CV joint and rear diff fully covered.
Before people chip in, I do drive like a teenager.
I used a car broker who scoured every dealership etc in the country. For the same spec Dmax it was 11-15K more. This is new prices.
Best engines on the market I reckon, the D max. Little agricultural inside.
