I just had one of the most epic man weekends of all time. Rode for 7 hours on Saturday and 6 on sunday. Absolutely insane riding. Rode the best I have ever ridden.
Not a kite in sight! I was riding mountain bikes in rotorua. Rode the national downhill track and hit all the big lines, rode all of the most tech tracks in the forrest. Full commitment to every line.

The only thing that comes close to that in kiting is a 30+ knots and 5m swell.

Ahhhh. At the moment mountain biking is giving me more fun than kiting. I have done very little kitting in the last 3 months. A combination of ****ty wind and me not being available when there is wind. The mountain biking has stepped up and filled the gap without any kiting withdrawals.

I am looking forward to those winter storms and monster swell though!

I thought you guys had waves even if there was no wind?

If you really must, buy a hydrafoil and a foilkite. gets you going at 7knots

Yep. The surf has been epic the last several months. But i'm not a surfer. I much prefer the mtb. I also have a 2500m mountain 20km away.

Plums, I reckon you're the only nomad out in NZ kiting in what is kite surfing and land kiting nirvana! Like a Robinson Crusoe that's discovered kite surfing in a remote island.

I envy you man. Well done.

Wow. Any road cycling around you? I would love to do a serious mountain road bike climb one day. Mountains here are hills by comparison

Yeah but on a single ride, I would have to travel 60km North at Paluma range. Locally, our highest peak is Mnt Stuart at 750m and it's one of the toughest around here, with angles around 18 to 20degrees

This is the first time I've been on this forum for a few months, i've been lurking on mtbr . mtb has taken over my life from kiting the last 2-3 years. Your absolutely right saying that only epic kiting conditions compare to a normal day on your bike ( trails permitting). But I think the key is variety. Mtb is relatively new to me compared to kiting and come next summer I'm sure I'll be frothing for the summer neasters and some swell, but at the moment I'm loving pinning gravity assisted trails. There really is nothing like it.

Until a tree halts it, I hit up some state trails 2 weeks ago on hard tail and full suspension , back to back, I halved my decent time on the second run, nearly wrote myself off a couple of times on the 3rd run, IMHO it's only a matter of time till you seriously damage yourself, I enjoy the climb as much as the decent,
If in Margs hit up the pines and Carter's tracks
The hairy marron bike shed does a great job on putting you out there

As for mtb being dangerous. Yes you are right the risk of mild injurey is greater. You could crash 100 times kiting and may be injured once. Kiting is the other way around crash 100 times and maybe not get injured once. But Kiting has a higher chance of serious injury and death. Particularly when you go out in 30 + knots and big sea. I've been in some conditions kiting where I have realised its literally victory or death.

As for crashing on mountain bikes. The thing that makes you crash the most is fear. If you are scared and back off you tend to crash a lot more than if you ride with complete confidence.

Here's my 3 steeds. Intense 951 for downhill. Santacruz blur ltc for all mountain and dmr for street and trials riding. I've recently upgraded the blur with enve carbon wheels and its improved the bike considerably.... Oh yeah.

Pick any one of the jumps in here. I'm hitting all the lines at Rotorua at the moment. Hitting gap jumps up to 8 meters and up to 12 foot drops.

Couldn't watch all 25 mins Plummet but your riding over there looks brilliant. Did they chop down all your trees to give maximum visual effect?

Are you using a seat dropper on only the Santa Cruz? What make you got and how reliable is it?

MTB has superseded kite-boarding for me now, it helps that those trails are only 500m away from home. Falling hurts a lot more though, especially if you are doing big gap jumps! I probably spend more time on SUP than a kite board; we have 12 lakes, a world-class white-water river and the ocean 35 minutes away. White-water SUP is challenging but very rewarding.

My latest toy is this thing: onewheel.com The downside is the cost (US$1500) plus shipping (another $300). My justification is that it is cheaper than a good MTB especially since it has a built-in motor. I have only had it for 2 days and I already want to put it in 'extreme' mode and hit some easy MTB trails.
