I'm usually the silly one kiting when others are shaking their heads. I love a good storm session.

What size kite Plummet in 35 to 40 knots ? oh and what sort of kite, ur board and weight? We have a forecast 35 to 40 knot blow on its way here to Gippsland in Victoria later this week - Im keen to have a go on what I bought as my kids kite (6m Bandit 3) - Ill be on a surfboard and weigh a winter weight of 89 kg !!

Having kited 50+ knots at Mullaz last season on a 6m. I now look back at that decision and think....STUPID IDIOT.

If its gusty and over 40. Don't contemplate it.



9 times out of 10 is w/sw and just moments away from landing on a car/post/star picket.

Was very keen... New id be over powered at woodies so went to Melville.. Just didn't have the balls to self launch or land so sat in the car and just watched the squalls blow through... Very scary... Glad I sat that one out

Yes anything over 40 is definitely stupid. No 2 ways about that.

I rode a 6 cat in 50 with cos I couldn't get going on a 4 and surfy as the drift was a bit much, Think I've calmed down over the last year as I don't like much over 30 to 35 now. Gets serious to quick!

It's nice to challenge yourself as your skills develop. I did a lot of this back in years 3 - 5
But the experienced kiters know when to head home, sit it out on the couch with a cold beer!

I think some of us have learnt that "sure, you CAN kite in over 35 knots, but why would you WANT to!"

A 35-40 kt seabreeze is fun, fark chasing it in winter, it probably comes with the odd 50 kt gust

I love it. The challenge of harnessing the wind, fighting the gusts, not thinking just reacting. It blows my mind. Combine that with a massive sea. Usually 35+ knots comes with 4m+ swells round here. You have massive waves, punchy wind it is pure adrenaline!

But it is dangerous as all hell and **** can happen in a heartbeat. As stated anything over 40 is stupid. I still enjoy the hell out of it though.

There are times when it is too dangerous though. The key to life and death is picking those times. Also those winds are only for experienced idiots. If you only have a couple of years under your belt then don't even think about it.

Having the right equipment is key to storm riding. My little 2012 6m reo is a gutless kite that doesn't even start getting interesting until 30+ knots. 35 knots and it starts to jump well. I start reaching for trim around 40 knot gusts. Its got huge depower at the bar and then lots more on the trim strap. I have had many sessions when others on different 6m kites have hated the conditions yet I have loved it. I put it down to the right kite for the conditions. In fact there have been several days when every has given up stating its too gusty. I've rigged my little 6 and day a blast.

All good mate, completely understand where ur comin from.. Go pro differences aside!

It's my first winter kiting.. Only 8months under my belt ... Possibly why I am always keen to launch as I love pushing myself more and more every session. I'm luckily enough to have been out with friends in a couple of storms before this so know it can go bad quickly..Sometimes I have to just convince myself that it can happen to anyone .. I just hate seeing the wind being wasted... Keep safe... And always put safety first .

For most people these winds are far outside their equipment skill and comfort zone. So they can't fathom the possibility of someone riding in these conditions with relative ease or safety. So they red thumb away......

actually, i think it could be because your head is so far up your own arse.

most of us have been out in these winds, but we don't feel the need to talk it up as though we are doing something that is somehow pushing the limits of human experience.

you're not base jumping plummet. you're just another middle aged kiter. it's great that you're stoked on the sport, but please tone it down a touch- we're not that interested or impressed by your death-defying teabagging...

Wait, middle-aged - isn't that the time when we start getting respect by default as we're obviously far more experienced and wise than anyone else because we have more grey hair and wrinkles? Pretty sure Terry McTool will back me up on that one...
