Cause its cooler than windsurfing
Because surf is crap in summer, and the wind is good.
And i kite now because i have become addicted.
i got into kiting because it looked like something cool to tell people (girls). And a few years later i still love telling people(girls)
I first got into it when i saw a bloke in 6 foot MR years ago on a red foil getting huge air then getting nailed and thought WOW i gotta do that.
I kite now for the main reason that it is just so much fun.
I started kiting to get into the surf - as I have become too unfit to be out as long as I wanted to be - 1 year on and that is still the reason I do it - kiting in the surf rocks... went for a paddle surf the other day - lasted 15 minutes went back to the beach and waited for the wind
I wanted to take up a watersport.
I wanted to take up a sport that was not so common.
I wanted to take up a sport that was not so much aerobic (I already cycle heaps)
And.. I just had a compulsion I can't explain. So far I'm not complaining. And I kinda like that there is a bit of a learning curve.

I reckon u chose the wrong sport...
U should have choose water aerobics with the oldies monday morning..
free tea and scones.....
wakeboarding costs too much, surfing is really boring unless u like hitting reef, skateboarding hurts too much, bmx i break bikes way too easily, sailing was too slow and attracts too many old farts who power trip on shouting at kids having fun, wasn't much good at tennis
but really its fun and new tricks are rewarding
Just like Top Hat said....I picked up a kite and flew into the air!!!
Don't know exactly....have skated, wakeboarded, snowboarded, ralley drived, rockclimbed, sky dived, MTB Biked...etc...etc.....kiteing gave me the buzz I was after....sun,sand, water, power of the wind, feeling of freedom, flying in the sky.....this doesn't even begin to answer why it is so addictive.... it just is....no explaination needed....just enjoy and be happy that you found it....so people that get so caught up on localism, bitching and the political side of the sport....i guess just haven't found it...... relax, and enjoy
Buenos Vientos
Because im an Environmentalist at heart
and really not a fan of team sports. e.g. badminton, ball sports or anything that doesnt have a board of somekind under ya feet ....
because theres nothing like cranking across the water, watching a huge roostertail behind you............ n saying faaark i,m goen quick!!!!!!
n sayen freeken hell!!!!! after launching a little to high of that wicked peak of a wave...........
n feelen the groove after doen a full on powerd jibe/REO off the face of a wave........
i,m in love
every day it gets better.
because i always wanted to wakeboard but knew that the driver of the boat was not my servant.
the kite is.
I needed something to get me out of the house and in the water in subwindsurfing winds. Really reminds me of windsurfing using a surfboard, WOW I love it!
I've always enjoyed flying kites. I got the opportunity to have a quick go on a mate's ~6m kitesurf kite in about 15kts of wind one Sunday and was hooked on the power from that moment on Monday morning, I was on the phone ordering gear.
I *had* considered windsurfing (even had a couple of goes at it), but it just didn't look that exciting. I was living in an area where there were no 'gun' windsurfers really. Just back and forth types. So it didn't inspire me much.
That was in 2003. Fast-forward to now.....I'm still hooked on the power. I'm also hooked on the fact that it's a wind-sport and doesn't involve the use of a powered craft.
I couldnt afford the jetski to tow me into some waves
and I now enjoy it when all the elements come together
I was doing a little bit of pole-boarding (and doing it very badly)
I had to go and work in Kiribati, a tiny fly-speck of a place in the central pacific, for a year, and I wanted to take a wind-sport with me. Pole boarding was much too much gear, so I bought a kite.
Had the very cool experience of being the first person to ever kite in the country. It was an absolute crowd-pleaser. There was a traffic jam on the island's only road, and hundreds of people lined the beaches to watch. Little keds were running back and forth pointing in the air at the "balloon".
A totally magic time.
Why do I do it now? Because my heart is still beating, and I'm not in a wheel chair. The only two reasons I can think that would make me stop. And even the wheel chair, I'm sure I could think of a way to get around
1. My shoulders are too stuffed to surf (Not that it's worth it in Metro Perth) and booger boards are like kissing your sister compared to surfing...
2. Can't afford to snowbaord
3. Did wakeboarding, trickskiing, slalom, skating (street), rollerskating (speed and figure), surfing etc etc etc for years.
4. Kiting rocks and is easily the better than all of em' combined
Oh also I just love meeting numbnuts who ask the usual "gee is that fun?" questions . I also figured it would impress chicks (and allow them to overlook my general lack of style, advancing years and pot belly)
I do miss the casual, sitting in line up meditational state of surfing though. (Hey youv'e got time to write your memoirs between decent sets in Perth.
i flew kites as a kid. As a teenager in 1993ish I built (what i thought was ) a big Deltakite, to pull me around with the aim of doing it on a surf board. Quite a visionary i was.
It failed.
Then three years ago i cottoned onto the fact that it was now a sport and i could buy proper gear to do it. so i did.
I started kiting for the extreme aspect of it. The rush, and how cool it seemed to me.
I find now it clears my mind of the troubles of the world. very medatative.
Then i do some dangling and go home.
To be perfectly honest, it's about the only thing that gives me some 'head space' these days. I tend to rely heavily on it (probably more than I should) to provide the chill factor I need. Hence, when there's no wind, I get the whole junkie withdrawal thing happening
