So Tim Pumpa jets off to luderitz in around 4 weeks to compete in the luderitz speed challenge, to represent Australia.
a few of us believe he will be a serious contender for the speed world record title, with alot of recent gps sessions nudging the 50 knot mark.
the wind in luderitz will average 20 knots more than our strongest stuff, so if the wind gods get it on, then he should have a good shot...

lets get behind him and make his 26 hour flight worth while!

Good luck Tim,

I've seen you once practising at Parham doing some incredible speeds (40kts+++), looked impressive!!!

I reckon with 40+ wind at Luderitz and perfectly dug flat water speed channel you have a real chance to beat the record, just watch out for equipment failure.

I've heard Luderitz is known for kite destruction and that there are no parts/repair facilities there, so it may pay to take some strategic spare parts with you. But you probably already know that...

Just out of interest - which kites/boards are you taking with you?

Top effort Tim.

Once you show them your speed skills, the whole kiting world will be asking "where the fark is Port Parham"

Believe in yourself & your ability.

Tim,

Did you know another Aussie - also Tim - went to Luderitz last year and he is the current "official" national speed record holder for kite sailing (33.94knots)? I accidentally stumbled upon this information this morning:

http://www.sailspeedrecords.com/kite-sailing.html

Interestingly Tim Turner doesn't seem to be a member of www.gps-kitesurfing.com

The overall national Aussie speed sailing record (for any vessel) is held by "Macquarie Innovation" at 50.07knots.

www.sailspeedrecords.com/national-speed-records.html

(all of the official speed sailing records are avg. speeds over 500m)

Hey yeah I have had a good chat with Tim Turner about his trip last year, friendly bloke.
My goals for the trip is to go faster than Macquarie Innovation and then hopefully post a big one, If the wind blows hard enough I feel its possible. I will give it my all anyway.
cheers

Ouch!!!
I was always wandering why these guys ride without helmets and wheather wearing a helmet actually helps or it just amplifies the blow to the head if it hits the water at high speed.
Maybe they know something about helmets that we don't (but should) know?

9 Oct 2010 : It's Official - 3 New National Records on the 1st Day of Racing!!
The 1st National Speed Record was broken within minutes of the start of the Luderitz Speed Event 2010 on what was expected to be simply a training session in anticipation prior to the big winds forecast for next week.

Kite surfer Gavin Broadbent smashed the existing New Zealand national record within 13 minutes of the opening of the first day of the 2010 Luderitz Speed Challenge on Friday 8th October at 2nd Lagoon, Luderitz Bay, Namibia. After only 3 runs his official average speed over 500m was recorded at 44.51 knots – the previous record being 40.68 knots.
70 minutes later, also on his 3rd run, Swedish Windsurfer, Anders Bringdal broke the Swedish National Windsurfing record. The existing record was 41.96 and his official recorded speed was 42.9 knots.
Australian Kite surfer Tim Pumpa was the 3rd competitor of the day to set a new national record – Best Kite Speed record for Australia with an official speed of 40.72 knots. The previous record was 33.94 knots.

All new records are still to be ratified by the World Speed Sailing Record Council (WSSRC).e wind forecast for Friday is 30 knots. This will mark the 1st day of racing for the 2010 Luderitz Speed Challenge.

being the first day on the water, it was a good 30-35 knots, so the competetors were more or less using the day for practice, as there looks to be some decent wind this week.

tim was underpowered on a 9m, so when its on he should post some quick times.
fingers crossed!!
