I built an Iceflyer and chronicled my progress for anyone who's interested in building one. http://www.iceflyer.net. Some of the links to third-party sites are broken. Will get around to updating it at some point. Feel free to contact me if you have questions.
Welcome to Seabreeze!!
Great step by step tutorial and pics as well. Are you planning on making a landyacht for the warmer months?
If so, please keep us posted (we like pics...)

Hi David'
I built a Wind Flyer (Ice Flyer)some years back. I loved the yacht but moved to class5 so that I could compete in racing. I would have loved to have raced the flyer with several other flyers. Here is a link that I posted on Seabrease .
Cheers

Over one year now i am sailing with my surf buggy.
I like the concept sail behind the piloot on our beach, and on the ice.
I just want to know how it works with the rope's on the ice flyer at the back, i need improvement at that point.
Here some foto's,
thats a nice set up youve got peter, , at least you have some good tension on the downhaul/vang/outhaul to set the sail well. does it need the the point where the sheet attachs to the body to be closer to the tail of the boom, that would have to help
Thanks for the nice comments. I am wind and ice surfer more than 30 years(started at 12 jears of age on water.)
Windsurf riggs on land and ice is a diffrent set up as on water.
I build my experience over the years for water and ice, on land its about good now.
I still modify my buggy, the front wheel is 35 cm closer to the driver for a better balance.
I would like to know more of the sheeting like the ice flyer , than may be the sail can pass the center of the buggy when tension comes. And the tension comes at that point sides ways from the back axel? like windsurfing.
Then i can build off my system to set the rigg like windsurfing :
mast direction against the wind, the first test went really well only the sheeting should be better.
With the mast against the wind direction i take off early'er, build up more speed in control in good balance.
To Landyacht,
Its an option , i am now pulling down on the sail , with your suggestion i am pulling backwards witch would be better.
But I would like to pull the boom side ways in direction where the wheels are.
To Lorry,
I also did some sailing with the landyacht from my buddy Jos, with the sail in front.
Whats good in my concept;
The view like this,
OK Pete,
Hey it's not my idea of a Land Yacht (We all see and interpret things differently) but it does its job nicely and from the shadows I would say the sail forms nicely and you seem to be cutting a good turn of speed. So regardless of my feelings it seems to be a fun machine and that is what it is all about, the more fun, in public, the more people will be interested and your sport will build.
I have seen footage and pictures of this style of LY and would like to be able to try one out under the conditions I prefer to sail. Even with the Pacific Magic I find that as the wind builds and speed increases my machine wants to broadside and slide through turns. It would be interesting to see how that style of LY performs under the same conditions.

Hey Peter, I enjoyed that ride, great beach to sail on. You can migrate to South West Australia anytime if you bring the beach with you!! Our beach down here is pure white but softish and about 10 metres wide when the tide is out...if I'm lucky... Wok
Hi Peter, lucky Bug... is all I can say. I used to live in Cairns and the beach near Pt Douglas was the same, did 120mph on my first motorbike down that beach, no safety helmet, no noggles and only thongs, shorts and tee shirt. Makes me shudder to think about it now...W
I just want to give everyone an impresion what you see (or not) with the sail behind the pilot.
My buggy is a fun machine with the size ? like the ice/wind flyer.
Fits in a normal familie car in pieces.
More speed is more stabillity since the balance is good and stay in a streight line.
In the jibe i make sure the sail dosn't swing to much , ohterwise it will slide big time (but fun to do) tacking no problem if i keep the speed on.
The film is made in januari, just one hour after the sun came up, temperatur 4? celcius, north-west wind.
Than its empty at low tide, normal its full with kite buggy's, blowkarts , people with dogs, kiters at sea and windsurfers.
The fim is with the best conditions so far.
Its at Brouwersdam, The Netherlands, we alloud to sail half the aerea size 500 x 1000 meter at low tide, as the water level rises stay sharp to go back to starting point. Somtimes no beach left at all.
So the aerea size is pritty small for high speeds, for that hopefully we get ice during the winter.

Peter, nice build. How do you tune your sail for ice or land compared to water? How does it go against a blokart?
How does it go against a blokart?
I can take off earlyer couse off bigger tyers/wheels on softer sandy surface, more stable my rear axle is 220 cm wide.
I never sailed a blokart so i can not tell the difrence in feeling.
How do you tune your sail for ice or land compared to water?
On land and ice , less loose leech on the sail and more outhaul compared to water with the given sail.
From the tip of the mast to bottom pull the downhaul till the sail is with out rinkels.
Extend the boom ±5 cm more as recomended , the sail will be more flat, but with enough profile .
Minimum wind for the choosen sail less outhaul, maximun wind more outhaul.
Next time i will try an ajustable outhaul.
I do not pull more downhaul , this creates lift , sliding and lack off control in overpowered situations.
Than i take a smaller sail.
i peter ,
verry nice ride indeed,i really fancy the iceflyer set up .
ive build a stern steererer myselve to go on the ice and tryed it on the westeinderplassen last febbruary but there was a lot of frosen on snow so i broke the helmstok in the proces
further more the brouwersdam is a good spot to go landyachting.(ive build a llf mini aswell) but youre right on the timing if you go in the afternoon it is to busy whit blowkart rentals and kite surfers among others.
but again a very nice buld, and a smooth ride by the looks of it
greetz jacco
I made a set up without sail for sheeting my steel ice flyer, it runs very smoothly.
Also made a aero plane steering.
Take it apart to fit in my car in a few minutes.
Suggestions for improvement are always welcome.
Peter.
Hi Peter, changes look good. A question on those wheels? What size (width and rim diameter) are the tyres, they look like they are fitted to narrow 100mm rims? We are packing to go back to WA now, enjoy your ski holiday..wok
looks good, but i think you need a tag on the outside of your foot steering controlls to stop the foot sliding off sideways and possibly going under the yacht.....then breaking
Hello Wok,
Wheels are:
Bearings type : 6204 2RS and size: 20mm x 47mm
I think i will add a safetybelt strap under the yellow tubes, somthing like this on the kite buggy's, to rest my foot in.Foto's will follow if its done.
Some thing that would help with the low end, is to rake the sail forward about seven inchs past vertical, if you follow Wallys plans you will have a succesfull boat, I built a tubular scalled down version a few years back and it ran very well.
Test with diffrent set up, winds speeds ±25 knots, sail size 4.7. A 5.8 sail would be better for good speeds but i want to know the diffrence in mast position in the low wind range for the given sail.
One test with the mast in a upright position,
one with the mast in maximum rake position.
More mast rake is more control and better speed compared to the upright position.
Low end take off power is just a little bit better in the upright position, but speeds and control in speeds are way worse than the raked mast position on the beach.
great to see that somebody has finally done the experiment that needed to be done with this set up setting up the sail for when you are up and powering instead of etting it up as you would when you initially get on the board.
whilst losing the initial take off power ,you dont slow yourself down as you accelerate . kind of like starting in 3rd gear .
great experiment well done. Its interesting to note how small your sails are compared to the US boats, yet you are sailing onsofter surfaces.
your beach looks stunning by the way
It is hard enough to get out to the dry lakebed when the wind is just right. Does the tide and wind seem favorable most of the time or is that just one more variable you have to deal with?
at least with a tide you know when the beach will probably be great .
Ive driven to the salt lake in the morning to be greted by some salt encrusted sailors who have packed up only minutes earlier when the rain had set in
Been rockin' this setup and theory for a couple years on a LL mini sized platform. Will learn this week and next as we test at Ivanpah if the is speed there or not, hope we have good wind.
