Hey new found friends:
I am starting this post to ask questions that may have already been answered on the forum, but if you have time to respond to anything you see, I welcome it.
Thanks in advance.
Ron
If you want a metric tape measure, send me a PM, I will send you one. Canada is officially metric, just that the older crowd has not yet coverted. Both imperial and metric are readily available. As I understand it the US was going to convert to metric and join the rest of the world...then they realized that they owned most of the guns and therefore it didn't matter.
Don't forget to allow for your brace aft of your mast step and to add a reinforcing strap.
Brian
Yeah Ron,
Lookin' good! You have gone about a some things a little differently but so long as it works who cares. Yu doin' a nice job for a novice..
Go for it,
Ron
Oh Yeah! Brian, I like your thinking ------About the Yanks and guns an all.
Hi Cisco
Yes I agree with you on the safety issue. This is not me in the photo although I did offer all of the safety equipment to him ... well you know kids these days
WN, I wouldn't worry about it! You satisfied the criteria Lots of photo's
Just be a little careful next time, we all get caught at some time or other.
Ron
as the author of the post you should have some extra iconsthat we dont see, like delete and edit.
they last a few days
Hi again ~ I have a photo of the Yacht construction up to this point that I wanted to share with the class. Tonight I am learning how to fiberglass.
Looks verrrry nice..... One question .. If the mast slides over the mast suport, what stops it when it comes to the angled brace? Not sure what everyone thinks but i am a little concerned with the mast splitting. The mast slips inside my support...
I guess we can see what happens... keep me posted on your thoughts,
the seat looks really nice. Have you thought of a name for your dirt boat?
I tried calling you but got no answer.. ill try again sometime
Duuuuuude! Lookin' Good. I assumed that the mast was going inside. Best had tell us what you're up.
Ron
Nice work.
I originally was looking putting the mast step inside the mast as well. then after much deliberation I decided to cut it off and start again. My big concern was the mast splitting as well. You've essentially got point contact on the wrong side of a brittle tube from an engineering standpoint. My plan was to reinforce the bejesus out of the mast, then i realised it was easier/cheaper to replace the mast step with an old fence post from the recycle yard (still had concrete on/in it).
Like you i am using a smaller diameter tube for the spine. I realised it was easier to cut two holes in the mast step tube with a hole saw, (from memory offsetting the holes by 12mm gave about a 10deg rake). I had to cut the bottom out for the build in my thread, but it is very neat in the kids mini i am also looking at where i did it from scratch, (also you won't need the strap.
Let me know if you want me to detail with some photo's.
Glenn
That seat is shaping up really well.
Only disadvantage with a fixed sear back is that it probably will not fit into the boot of your car like this.
Thanks for your comments, I have a plan for the mast-over technique. When I get the photos I will post. D-Day is in a week and a half, I am anticipating smooth sailing. More later...
WN,
if
you take any notice to them Queenslanders you sillier than they are..Hay! CISCO
Looks like you've been ousted as the Pilot WN.. Bleedin' Dog s will do that to you every time. Could come the time when you will have to build a tandem unit so the Lab' can go with you.
Ron
Desertyank,
I would loan you the missus to help with the wind thing but you don't needing to go breaking any records just yet.
WN2 your machine look good out there in the middle.
Ron
Short version of the story: It sailed Great! I did not do the sheeting until I arrived at the lake bed ~ so I had no idea what I was doing. That will come later with a couple of minor modifications. The wind was gusting and we clocked it at about 20 MPH (or 32.2 KPH). I had a big grin on my face the whole time I was out there so I would say it was an enormous success. Thank you all for the guidance and I am sure I will have more questions as I get into the sheeting. My furry friend did not make this trip, she will be attending events in the future!
I am adding a couple of other non sailing photos. One of the rocket that hit my bicycle tire and a couple of shots of the palaya.
