After approximately 3 hours use my cheap stamped wheelbarrow bearings began to fail. I found a hardened steel flanged bearing 3/4 x 1 3/8 on ebay from USA bearings and belts listed as lawn mower bearings. cat# IH-384881 These are much better bearings and fit perfectly into the straight tube wheelbarrow hubs.
Now this is what I'm Talking,
The info is out there, you just have to ask
Thanks for that deansh250.
I probably could have spent n afternoon hunting to no avail but someone has been there before me and found an answer.
Tell me those cheapies how are they performing under stress? and Balance wise?
Ron
Not having an aero wheel to examine I would assume they would be a harder compound rubber and not as good for the light load in a landyacht
I think I may be able to step in here with, not expertise but at least I have a couple of tires to compare. As I said earlier the Air Trac design would compete with the Barrow wheels in some cases. That is going on what has been recently said. It is relatively light and the same dia' as the 400's, it is wider though. Goodyear, Dunlop and many others are too heavy and hard to use successfully . Their most endearing attribute is that they are for Freeeeeeeeee
Now as for Barrow Wheels, what are the pros and cons for the cheap plastic-y tires that come with the Cheap Chinese Wheels??
Ron
Here is some info taken from the thread,

What is it with this sport???
I decided to have a go at it after years of contemplation------------on and off
and am looking to have the best performance already and I don't even want to be competitive, it probably is just wanting to go as fast as the wind will carry me
Wheels has anyone done a comparison of Rim (Complete) Weights, Poly against Alloy and Pressed Steel etc? Generally we grab the nearest wheel that fits the bill . Strong, Cheap and good looks, the later is only a self gratification thingy. If the ugliest wheel possible turned up and out performed everything else I for one would be first on the Band Wagon.
It just seems to me that 9kg is a lot of weight to spin up----- Ok! then 8.7kg. I mean like 0.00kg would be best but we all know that ain't happening, now.....is it??? "Back to the Future" "Hoverboards" would be useless in this situation as well
0 traction and all
It was recently stated that Land Yachting is a sport of compromises. That is true but isn't life??? Salt and clay pans aren't available to us all
Aside from the POM's Green bird and it's well earned record speed. What is the fastest recorded speed anyone has done in this country with a bog ordinary fun machine and the strongest winds sailed?? Some Stat's would be nice.
Looking at that pic of the wheels it seems to me that the only way to go is more than likely the Fallshaws as when you start looking at the others it all starts to become a bit Grey. Sure we (Aussies) may well make a great Wheel but then you start to get into it you find that they start being copied and made cheaper and cheaper over seas for cheapness sake. Brands start to become blurred, construction and materials dubious and then confusion sets in, which do I buy?? Which is safest etc..
I have never seen a LY come unglued at speed or otherwise, many of you probably have. I get the impression that it could all become very Hollywood with forks digging in and Carts doing Summer-salts etc
It probably isn't that dramatic but I keep being told of Cuts, Bruises and yards of Skin being stripped from Limp Bodies Well that is probably over Dramatizing it, otherwise known as Gilding the Lilly.
Do we have any readily accessible yarns available
Ron
PS. HIKO; Which one the Left or the Right one???[}:)]
thanks hiko. is that rim alone or rim and tire? stopped at a friends and weighed mine after i got new tires and didn't pay real close attention to scale, think mine were in ounces. 42 oz for rim,(1.2 kg?), 40 oz for tire (1.1 kg), 12 oz for tube (.35kg). new tires were double in weight (81 oz.) interested to feel difference. looks like i'm in ballpark tho.
I just weighed the wheel from my old Hot Stuff. 10lb 8oz or 4.8kg in French. The aircraft wheel is really slow but it suits the style of the yacht.
It was great for picking up chicks.
I just did a comparison weight test Air Trac' against Chinese import. Scale Balance weight comparison and it worked out "Near as Damn it is to Swearin" "Even Stevens" with a little bias in favor of the Air Trac but then a rim and tube have to be added to that. So as is becoming painfully obvious that Cheap Shoddy Plastics are a clear winner
Bugger! I hate paying goo money out on Plastic.

Ive done 110kph in a wooden early version of a LLM [}:)]
That was using metal wheel barrow wheels. It was the same unit i was sailing when filmed for the"Get away" TV series, only on that occassion i was on two wheels and playing "Oh when the saints go marching in" on my pocket trumpet at the same time. As you do when you want an extra challenge
cant i go sailing for 1 weekend without youse all gettin in a flap.
ron if you intend to use those A?C tyres , the next thing you will have to do is go shopping for some 6"x6" alloy go cart rims. Maybe AUS 230 could post a photo of the ones he has left over from his old "viking"
they are tres light
The bearing that fit them will mean you will only have a 15mm axle which can be made by slightly machining a 16mm or5/8 HT bolt
once you get your rims and fit a tyre we can discuss how to go about planing off about 30-40% of the weight off the sidewalls and tread, then regrooving the tread.
youve got a really tough tyre that you can really go to town on.
i do believe this post may have meant that alot of the previous worry posts re the weight might now be redundant
Shoot! Is that the best you could do??[}:)] Not a bad effort at all.
I have a problem with those speeds and Chinese Cheapie wheels.....well at least the ones I have the Rims have a decided off kilter/axis distortion which is then exaggerated by the rubbish tires all this and putting them over the knife edge balance also shows them to be horribly out of balance. All in all for a Land Yacht, totally unsuitable and a waste on my cash. For a wheel Barrow that is not likely to get over 2kph dubious as looking at the tread now there are splits forming about the Tread Pattern and also in the Side Walls. Hmmm! 150/200 kg of bricks or wet cement at 1 kph an horrendous up turning of the vehicle and passenger/s, which might incur severe chipping and even fatal breakage .
As much as I don't like the idea I will have to purchase Fallshaws for every day use and a nice pair of Air Trac's and Go'ie rims for special occasions (Soft Sand and Bush Airstrips).
LANDYACHT!!! It's about time you got your butt back here get us all sorted Danged! Wasting time out on some Desert Salt Pan or beach.. Land Yachting is about Forums and keeping us all in line[}:)].
Those tires and wheels clemco look good.
Now I could be wrong but have a look at those Air Tarc's. They are a nice soft tire and could stand a little tread trimmed to lighten them? What say you then Possibly with a thinner tread area and high pressure they will take on a rounded Motor Bike type shape giving a little less rolling resistance
So how was your week end Sojourn
Ron
p.S Have a look at my seat making quandry.
SN.
I didn't look at the speed rating. Damn! They may not handle the speeds I'm looking Stch stch. Back to the ol' Drawing Board[}:)][}:)].
I called in @ the Davenport Airport this morning and picked up a couple of tires. Now I have a pair of Air Tracs, Goodyears and Condoors, the later 2 pair are going to need a lot of cutting to lighten them.
Ron
Hey! aus203,
Have you read the last fro, Landyacht. You have spare 6x6's?? Talk to me..
Thanks for that Landyacht
Ron
Damn! I wish someone would ask m about the Viking Long Ship
So Cisco, Curiosity got the better of you Huh??
I just had to tell this story. Thanks for going along with me. Read no further Ok! If you do I will have to kill you.[}:)][}:)]
I have decided that I am not going to be fed to the Night Crawlers. It is the Big Bonfire for me. Mounted in the Stern of the ship is an Abalour Scotch (Single Malt) Bottle in which my ashes are going. To save me the embarrassment of Hanging about on my sons Mantel Piece over the Fire Place Gathering dust I am to be set out to Sea when a steady Southerly is blowing. If he chooses, the Rod Stewart song "Sailing" playing. A funny thing about the whole business he reckons he is going to hold back some of the ashes to incorporate in his Art.
Ok So now is your curiosity satiated?? Hmmmm
Yeah. I am going to have a BBQ too. Anything else is a waste of real estate.
But it is just all smoke and mirrors to me.
Ah Yes! My sons, but have you ever seen it carried out?? I also must have made a few enemies down here as there are several of my friends wanting to shoot Flaming arrows at me as I sail off. Just to be a total Nark I intend to outlive the lot of them[}:)] Sods also want the bottle to be full for the wake, that is fair enough. However I get the impression that my portion will be thoroughly strained over the Kidneys before it is to wet my ashes. Ba-----s!!!
Oh I do LOVE the Bodies idea there is this particular neighb-----.
