Thanks to Iand for this idea!!

The purpose of this thread is to collect a register of all landyachts & Blokarts so that people interested in the sport can see what types are available, obtain some information regarding them and see who in their vicinity owns them. Hopefully this will enable them to make an informed decision regarding what type of landyacht they should purchase or build and who they can sail with locally.

Please include a picture of your landyacht and fill out the details in this template:

Class - V Pacific Magic
Length - 2.5m (axle stub to axle stub)
Width - 2m
Mast Ht - 5.2m
Approx sail area - 5.5sqm
Location - Adelaide
Sail Number - AUS 50
Built by - David Rose and myself. Sail by Ken O'Brien. Designed by Paul Day.

Comments -
This is my first landyacht and it sails great. It is designed to go on a roof rack by removing the rear axles, but I've found it much easier to use a trailer as it takes at least 2 to lift it up there and I didn't like the idea of sand an salt falling on my car.

David Rose and the guys at Adelaide Landyacht Club were a huge help when I was building it and they are great to sail with at St Kilda Beach.

The sail by Ken O'Brien is absolutely excellent and very reasonably priced.
Seat was made by David Rose
All tubing (alloy and drillers tube) was supplied by David Rose
Wheels & tyres from Mullins wheels
Pullies, sheet & fittings from Whitworth Marine

This is my (Vic's) second landyacht and it sails great. It is still being modified. The seat is made from wood (strip Built) I have started to build a third class 5.
I formaly sailed at Lake Lefroy and will sail there at every chance I get.
Next seasion I will be sailing with the Sandgropers.

The only problem that i have had so far it bending axels this problem has been overcome by using thicker class 12 bolts.

NOT CURRENTLY SAILING ...... "Wildfire" Designed by computer
Class - 5
Length - Class 5 maxium minus 20mm
Width - Class 5 maxium minus 20mm
Mast - 1 piece aluminium scaff tube
Approx sail area - Class 5 maxium
Location - Sailed in Adelaide
Sail Number - KA-14
Built by/purchased from -Brian Reynolds in 1985
Comments - Built from aluminium scaffold tube 48.4mm x 4.47mm wall 6061 T6
brace struts were steel.
ALL attachments to the scaff tube were done via steel clamps,
Seat was made form 4mm plywood covered with fibreglass.
Steering was via tiller (no foot control) this was to enable the sailor to lay as flat as possible to reduce wind resistance, The tiller also enabled push starts to get the yacht to a good speed before jumping in.
Axles were 1" tube with "R" pins to hold wheels on

NOT CURRENTLY SAILING... "Sandpiper" it had the nick name of "Plastic Duck"
Class - 6 "Sandpiper"
Length - Approx 2.1m
Width - Approx 1.5m
Mast - 2 piece Aluminium supported by wire stays 1/2 way up
Approx sail area - 4sqm (without jib)
Location - Adelaide
Sail Number -
Built by-Martin Bell + Brian Reynolds
Comments - One of the original class 6 designs,
About 10 yachts were built in various colors.
Frond end was to light which caused problems for steering, this improved when a larger wheel (same as the rear) was added.
Rig was set to far back
Jib was added which increased speed but made steering and tacking very difficult on a soft surface.
The sail was designed to fit the mast flex.
The front end and rear axles unpluged from the fibreglass seat for transport in a small hatchback car.

You all wanted to see some landyachts ,so here goes. I'll start with the smallest in the fleet.
HUMMINGBIRD
width 1060mm (overall),
length1060mm (axle centres).
sail area 2.5m to 3m ,
suits kids up to 12year old. fits in a shoulderbag

note the extra handles for hanging on in the turns. The longest trip this yacht has done is a 5km trip to"the Island" on lake lefroy.

The mother of the Lefroy Minis.
WEE WEE WEE
lngth 1640mm(wheel centres).
width 1550mm (overall)
ssail areas 3.5m to 4.5m

this is the first mini that I built. . and was the basis of all the subsequent minis.
The next batch were all fold up yachts . they are all rather heavy but sail well. This yacht had a mast that offsets so the steering can pass by.

Later sails were a lot more powerful and this has led to the wood and fibreglass body to crack internally. these photos were taken just before the yacht was retired from active service and stripped for her parts.
She has a perfect race record winning 8 races from 8.
her longest sail was a run to the south end of lefroy followed by a 45km downwinder to the old clubhouse. she will be missed but the new yacht uilt from her bones will be a beauty.

Heres a class 5 yacht I built for the wife. its way to powerful for her ,but what would I know I refer to it as a PROMO as it was built to fit te 2007 FISLY rules for a PROMO cl 5 yacht. having raced promos in Argentina in 2008 the next generation will have swept axles and a lower seat.
length 2500mm (axle centres)
width 2000mm(overall)
weight 51kg
sail area 4m to 5.5m.
sail shown was 5.89m and was returned to sailmaker for recutting

The seat was developed to be a really comfortable unit which will fit a range of yachts . As some of us landsailors get older we are needing more comfortable seats.

the front forks/steering is the most controlable and responsive Ive yet built. and probably the simplest.

The chassis was designed and built with simplicityand strength in mind

heres a little 3 seater that was built in a fit of enthusiasm and one A4 sheet of paper. Christened
LOVE,PEACE and INSANITY

designed to give passengers the feeling and thrill of a bigger yacht. the yacht sails at the same speed and acceleration rate as a class5. runs on 10" mini wheels at th rear and 8"in front. same steering set up as the PROMO.
width 2800mm (overall)
length3400mm(axle length)
sail area 8.7m recut windsurfer sail
the chassis core is a 3m length of NQdrill rod ( cold drawn tube) with the axle tubes and front chassis tube of NQ core tube, also cold drawn, sized to fit inside the NQrod. overall weight of this yacht is 109kgs. not bad considering a class 3 yacht this size in carbon fibre weighs 100kgs

blokart

Class:- blokart(one design)- should also fit Aus class 6 rule and Lake Lefroy Mini rule.
Length:-1.65m
Width:-1.4m
Height:-4.2m with 3m sail
Sail Area:- 2m, 3m, 4m and 5.5m sails available.
Sail(chassis) Number:- S1292
Price New:- About $4,000 for the stainless model depicted or about $3,200 for the powder coated steel model both with 4m sail.
Accessories:- Many, see www.blokart.com.
Features:- Appears to be the most compact and prolific land yacht in the world with some 7,000 odd having been sold. Due to the one design nature of the blokart, one that has been well maintained should not lose value in the long term (subject to the law of supply and demand).
Comments:- I dare not say anything negative for fear of litigation from blokart inc. Personally I prefer the powder coat model as I believe they are stronger and less prone to bending. I wouldn't sell my powder coat kart as it is just too handy, compact and ready for a quick blast. I would sell my wife's stainless kart but for nothing less than $3,200.
If a person wishes to enter the sport of land sailing for recreation and/or competition and is not inclined towards DIY home building, I believe the blokart is the best entry level yacht available on the market today (03/08/2008).

I dragged this one out and rigged it today. known and loved as PIGS MIGHT FLY she was built as a yacht for people to try out when they say "Iwant to sail a big yacht"
the yacht suits sailors to 5'8" and has hand steering for shorter sailors or to assist in a fast power turn. . The mast is heavily raked a 17degrees and the step is more than halfway back from the front wheel. this makes for a very stable platform and despite its small size the yacht is VERY difficult to tip and rarely lifts a wheel when sailing.Sail area is only 4m but the 1500 chord wingmast makes this a very powerful set up. Top speed to date is 100.0kph.further speed was prevented by lack of wheel balancing.
the mast uses a 'Radial Boom system' to control the mast to boom angle . this system was first shown to me by Ross Gamlin in 1987 and is the key to making such a small rig work well. Another important aspect of this yacht is the flexible rear axle that bend at speed and combined with the springy front tube makes the yacht 'Ride' the gusts then returns the stored energy as acceleration AFTER the gust hits
Specifications
wheelbase 3000mmlong (axle centres)
width 2350mm (overall)
sail area 4m

Body 62mm od Q coretube and 12mm ply
rear axle 2000x190mmx19mm king billy pine plus 1000x190mmx12mm top plank laminated and glass taped edges.
steering Foot and/or hand

This yacht is one of 3 built to a "Class" defined by its one rule,
The rear axle shall consist of a 2000mm tube or plank .
the rest of the design is free .
thother 2 yachts are
MINI VINDI Bill Finch
CROC Travis Bartlett. Hopefully they will post thier yachts soon

My first land yacht, built from plans on the web. The wind flyer is great fun to sail. and can sail in just about any wind conditions due to using a wide range of sails.
Unfortunatly there is no class to race in, so I oppted for class 5, the yacht does not tack as high as class 5 but can be very fast in high speed runs.

Club 88

In 1988 members of the Sandgropers Land Yacht Club in Rockingham, Western Australia developed the 'Club 88' land yacht within the international class 5 specifications.
This was done to provide a competitive land yacht of equal performance to other class 5 variations at a relatively low cost to give members the opportunity to participate in the competitions on an equal basis.
More than 60 Club 88 land yachts have been produced and have proven to be competitive in local, interstate and international competitions and remains the cheapest Class 5 land yacht in Australia.

Club 88 land yachts are not produced commercially and are manufactured using a jig held by club members.
They are produced from the materials specified under the class 5 guide lines and the sails are manufactured from templates held by the Clubs nominated sail maker.
The club’s yacht building committee build the basic yachts to order and the sailor then completes the fittings including seatbelts, sheet rope, pulleys, ratchet etc.
Some minor variations are allowed but the intent recommended by the club is to comply with the 'Club 88' specifications.
