dont panic Ron , just a small length of 2" glass tape is fine , even on a carbon mast. dont be shy with the wood, some old "Oregon" Douglas Fir from an old bedframe, or a nice piece of what we big islanders call tassie oak.
but yes dust masks and vacumn up the dust

No Panic.. No need to teach the young buggers they will learn to take the risks without us encouraging them.. Didn't we, I, I, I minds the time when I've cleared the nazal passages of Steel and CF dust in recent times. Bit of Ash/Tas Oak a bit of Huon with a straight grain would be goo too.

This is a picture of a ball scoop we found in our school gym. This looks really good for a mud guard we think this will be an ideal idea and it will work well. Here's some PICS

!!!!! i hope they dont miss them !!!! here is a pic of the land yacht we measuring it so we can shorten it to the right size!

Good idea Lads, though I wouldn't talk about it too much:-) Another you can try is a section of the same dia tire. To create a Mud Guard I used a section of a blown Aircraft tire to make a front mudguard, a minimum of about a quarter of the OD and should be kept as close in to the Front Tire as is feasible I also had to create a special bracket to hold it in place. The bottom edge should also just clear the ground when you are sailing so that water doesn't get thrown up into your face.

A bit of progress...
We cut the front wheel off the Mad Project and have fitted it to one of the single seat LY's.
Now we have to re-build the shortened front end.
We were given a couple of 6m sails by Kazza...who lurks on the windsurfing forum.
Many thanks for the kind donation Kazza.
They are in very good condition.....look too speedie for us perhaps Should be ideal for the mainsail on the Mad Project.
We tried the new sails on the single seat LY for size......the new front end looks interesting....perhaps we need to shorten the whole thing down a tad
Back to re-building the fences

Hi guys,

Firstly thanks for unlocking this thread Hills, when I heard from Tassiefubur this morning that the thread was locked down because it was old news, I was upset it's came so far with nearly 10000 hits. Still we have tried to landsail when the oppunity arose, but it wasn't going happened because of the wet weather of Tassie's winter..... real shame to, i've also miss alot of bike riding latly

We have put alot of our efforts into HPV (Our human power vehicles)

... and sadly, we have to completly rebuild our white HPV, Camikaze, because of the regelations in Victoria.

But.... with the MAD-HATTEN PROJECT, we have rebuilt the front end

and we inserted a custom made Fred Flint-Stone Stopping Device, made by Tassiefuber, and it works quite well, only that it digs up the driveway....

Hopefully some more improvements will come along..... any suggestions?

This is why we have not been land yachting this winter.
This is the 4th flood we have had so far this year.......and the biggest in 40 years!
This is our lower paddock where the troops usually get lots of fast, fun runs on hard dry ground.
Got a couple of International 12 square meter sharpies in the shed that are going to be "retirement" projects. Perhaps we should have started on them instead!
You could sail a keel boat up the Coal river......build a marina perhaps!
Our town oval is a total swamp. Council is making plans for qa rice crop to defray costs.
We have been given access to a nice paddock near school....on top of a hill. Good, claen air. Will be the bees when it dries out.

Dear veiwers of The Madhatten Project.

Would any of you would like to contribute to the project in the form of donating any pulleys you have lying around collecting dust. We are asking this because we are almost ready to set sail accept we do not have enough pulleys to completly rig her up. If you can help, send to Campania District High School P. O. 7026 TAS

Yours truly the Students involved in The Madhatten Project at Campania District High School

Finally CDHS has put a movie together about the new front end of the "Horizontal Machine" This movie will demostrate us testing it out. Any Opinions or questions relating to this movie will be appreciated. Once again, any support regarding the positioning of the running rigging and blocks will be greatly appreciated. Thanks and Enjoy
We have some pics of the type of blocks we are in the market for. We will post them soon and see if we can score some "cheapies"

Hi there people

We are still here!!

Our apologies for not replying earlier but the CDHS Team have been heavily at work with the HPV (Human Power Vehicle) race up at Maryborough, Victoria. Which leaves us no time to landsail and to complete the "Horizontal Machine" But the race is only 3 weeks away so once that's out of the way we can concentrate on completing the "MAD-HATTEN PROJECT" which we know you guys are eager to see in action.

In the meantime, CDHS have made a movie about a brief summary of the Landyachting and some of our HPV experiences at school. We hope you enjoy and be kind enough to reply. Our motivation relies on you guys!! Cheers

SUCCESS
The Madhatten Project was given its first run today.
I suspect the troops will remember this occassion for quite a while.
We took all 3 to 7 mile beach.
Wind was light west/ southerly........good for rigging up and a quiet test run. Everything seemed to hold in place.....Issac and Bodie then promptly disappeared 7 miles down the beach......with the breeze aft of the beam, a regular soldier's .......had fun getting back....no wind at all....pushing builds character. They now fully understand you don't have to be smart to be able to sail on a reach.
We were on our grade 10 school BBQ.....started cooking snags.....wind piped up to 20knts. Bugger the snags .....we were off.....
The Mad beast loved this wind......consistently beat the other two.(they were overpowered in the gusts and needed smaller sails)
Ran fast, tracked straight, acceleration was impressive in the gusts and stately in the steady wind. The steering was light and positive.....the turning circle could be better. The front seat ride is so cool....all you have to do is sit there and trim the foresail.....one gets a tad busy in the driving seat....interesting watching the flex in the main frame. On 2 wheels was the best fun you could have with your pants on.
Somebody needs to build one of these out of aircraft grade chrome moly tube.
The other 2 land yachts had a real ball...powerslide heaven!
A TOP DAY
Issac had a movie camera....hopefully it did not self destruct with all the salt and sand flying about.....pics soon perhaps!!!

Two pics of our first sail.
Very light wind wind to start, tried single first

.........it built to over 20knts later.
Issac will post a vid soon taken after our initial 2 up runs. The breeze had backed off a bit by then. Still it "blew us away!"

One thing that did surprise me was how close-winded the "Mad" thing was. (Our old ketch back-winds the mizzen and we do tend to drag it to windward.) Perhaps schooners are better...but I somehow doubt it. We seem to have got the position between the 2 masts about right....pure luck though. The foresail was a nice little flattish windsurfer one from the tipshop. A good buy at about $2.00. Issac picked up the main in Perth WA for a couple of dollars as well. Needs some work on the luff to make it flatter.....another project for Mum's 'ol Bernina!
We have some much bigger sails we could use for the main....don't know how they would affect the balance though. We cannot use a much bigger foresail as the boom size is restricted. Perhaps one with more roach at the head. At no time were we overpowered 2 up. The other 2 landyachts were.
Any suggestions?

you have the length to keep it down without it being too twisty, dont touch a thing. just focus on getting the sails running real clean and wrinkle free.
top job folks
