^^Honey, you know how we've always wanted a little boat to potter around the bay in, I've bought the ideal beginners boat that is just perfect for the 2 of us.
We even get a steering wheel for each^^

I always thought they were 'his' and 'hers' steering wheels for when there's a fight on board. One goes to starboard, the other to port .

Hi all,
Well we made it, the mast is in, YES!!!!!
What is it with boats in regards to time it takes to do a job? I am sure the old adage of whatever time you think it will take, just double it is so true.
We were on site at 8am for an 11 am lift, and we were pushing it right to the wire to be ready, but ready we were.
The lift went really well, the credit for that goes to Antoine, it was a pleasure watching a true professional at his craft. The mast was positioned onto the step, forestay was connected first, the the diagonals, then the verticals, the initial tensioning was as simple as Antoine counting the turns on the adjusters on the port side, and the starboard side following his every step.

So the mast is now in, tensioned down and tuned. Next.....
Tomorrow we fit the boom, then the mainsail onto the boom and cars and headsail onto the furler.
It was interesting to see Antoine tuning the rig, the last 6 turns on the outer shrouds require a big shifter, a 3' length of stainless steel pipe and a huge amount of physical effort. I am glad he was here, I never would have imagined the tension required was that much.

So, this time tomorrow we should be taking her out for her first test sail, can't wait!

That is amazing. I would have been worried something was going to break. The shrouds must feel like iron bars.

Hi Selk,

Yes I did actually, hmmm.....Selkie spies are everywhere!
A genuine sweetheart, it was good to see she managed to finally sneak in some sailing time. I felt pretty bad, they were being held up dropping into the water up by our crane driver, who whilst he did a brilliant job, he also did it soooo slowly...it was excruciating!

AAAAAAARRRRGGGHHHH!!!!!! Don't you dare!
You know how HG mentioned *&^%$#@ seagulls the other day? Today, for the first time in years, I get down the boat to find....poo...on my nice shiny new darling. I stood and stared, I couldn't believe it. Years without a trace of any wildlife, and the day after it is mentioned.......

Edit: I did leave a bit of bubble wrap now 40' in the air wrapped around the forestay, does that count?

Now that it is set up professionally I would be inclined to buy one of these so I could duplicate the figures later.

Excellent advice Ramona,
I forgot about a Loos gauge, I will add that to my shopping list.
Cheers SB.

Out of interest, this is the lower spreader shroud mountings (pic taken from above), the left hand is the vertical shrouds (these are the ones that take the nuts tension), the right hand is the diagonal. The pins are approx 20mm, and held in place by split pins that fold up into the body. Bit different to my little JOG boat.

Hi SandS,
It was absolutely......non existent!
The rains set in, and unusually stayed consistently light-medium-heavy, wind shifts all over the place. It wasn't getting wet that was the issue (within the first 10 minutes you were soaked, so after that it was a non issue), but some of the works needed just a leetle bit of dry weather that just wasn't going to happen.

What we did achieve:
- Got the boom on and the sheet/reefs/outhaul run.
- Up the mast and lazyjacks fitted. The boom is supported by the lazyjacks, no topping lift, and weirdly you set the boom height by these also. They're only 5mm dyneema, but you undo the one closest to the mast and haul, and the whole boom position moves up or down, set your height and then tie off accordingly.
- The mainsail lifted and installed into the boom bag and fitted to the cars. Every second batten receptacle is non solid, ie: they're connected to the mast car with a bungee cord! They're anchored to the mast car by a solid pin and grubscrew, and trying to loctite these things in the pouring rain was a mongrel of a job. The mainsail is impossible to lift by yourself, so it was a two man job just to lift it and slide it into the boom bag. Thank god it stays on the boom.
Too wet for pictures today, but earlier pics to show what I mean...the black ties are the lazyjack anchors.

What we didn't achieve:
-Headsail fitted to furler. Antoine was hauling on the mainsail to try and get a batten receptacle to line up with a car, and as everything was soaking wet, his hand slipped and he centre-punched himself squarely in the nose. Blood everywhere, ice and towels, I fair dinkum thought he'd broken it, the hit was hard enough to almost knock him off the boat. That caused a temporary stoppage, it was getting dangerous to continue in those conditions, we were just asking for trouble.
The rain eased a little and back into it, but the weather was bad enough to slow us down, so attaching and furling the headsail is now a tomorrow am job.
- Checking and taping of all the split pins that connect the standing rigging.
- Final adjustment of the shrouds (more tension!!!)
- Soldering of the GPs antenna.
- Jacklines refitted and tensioned.
We will be on the water by noon tomorrow. It was frustrating to be so close, but our mantra is to not rush it, it would be stupid to cut a corner at the 11th hour.

That boom is quite low to the deck or is it not in position there??

If you think you had problems with the rain at Manly you should have seen the "Bedlam at Burnett Heads" this morning.

The phone call I got at 3:30 this morning was "Get your arse down here pronto. We can't even see your yacht; It is blowing 35 knots plus and we need all the hands we can get."

Dutifully I dressed in shorts, sailing shirt, Volleys and rain coat, packed torch, hand held VHF with spare battery pack and headed on down. There was hardly any rain or wind in Bundaberg so I thought Dianne is exaggerating again but the closer I got to Burnett Heads the more I realised she wasn't.

Six yachts in all dragged through the soup in the basin including mine, Wanderer66's Carter 33 and two thumping great catamarans, the owners of both of which were out of town.

One of them was directly upwind of me and putting the wind up me and the other thumped into the marina threatening to break it up. The marina I must add is being held together with sticky tape and rubber bands and is loaded up with 15 boats, half of which are 15 tonnes displacement.

I am getting my boat out of there and up town to my mooring as soon as possible.

Wanderer66 and I got our boats re anchored around midday after the eye of the storm had passed over us and neither has suffered any damage.

The low has headed south to join up with another low down there so it looks like you Sydneyites might cop a flogging in the next day or two. Batten the hatches boys!!!

Hi Cisco,
The boom is in its correct position in that pic mate, just think Imoca 60 or Open 40. The adjustable height is over your head in the cockpit, looks weird doesn't it? This is why the vang connects to a pad eye on the side decks, as a traditional vang doesn't have enough purchase as the boom is so low.

Glad to hear your boat is ok, that would NOT be a pleasant phone call to get! You were still there at lunchtime? You must feel stuffed! I had a friend drive up from Sydney yesterday, they left at 4am and just missed a ton of flooding and road cuts in Sydney, not pleasant apparently!

Hi Shaggy
How do you fit a trysail ,and storm jib ? Would be a bitch to fit if the lazy jacks are holding the boom .

you need to show how for B 2 G.
Might have to get Antoine to fit another track on the mast.
They must have a way especially with the pogo racing transatlantic , funny i dont think i have seen photos of the french single handlers under storm

I bet the french have a technique

Just spotted Fusion in full sail off Manly.
By the way she was moving there'll be one very happy skipper tonight.

I can see why they don't have back stays, the main has a massive roach. I thought it was a big cat at first.

Well done Shaggy, as my old footy coach would say 'effort delivers reward'.

Hi Spig,
The inner forestay is set up for hanked headsails aka: storm jib. The trysail is a bit different, my third reef acts as a trisail, ie: it's a massive one. If the S2H rule was based on % of luff length, I might have a chance, if it requires a separate trisail I'm a bit stuck. I do have a mouse run for a spare main halyard, but not two car tracks.
