There's an awful lot of those "crappy" French Beneteau, Jeanneau or even Dufor floating around the worlds oceans.
Just for the record, I drive one of those "worse than crap" French cars and have done so for nearly thirty years, no way in hell would you find me in a Holden or Ford.
Well from what I have read Hunters are very well built and its only the people that actually own them that have good things to say about them! American made has always had a good reputation. We are talking Boing vs Airbus here! Chevy vs Peugeot! But I could just swing both ways as I do like the jeanneau layout and lines.

Carter 33 for 35 grand in the back of this months "Afloat" would be worth a look. The Cav 32 is still there too, must have the record for the longest ad in history surely!

LooseChange I don't think you're right on not having to pay GST when importing a yacht, if that's what you meant.
I looked at all of this a couple of years ago and pretty sure you get hit up for GST on the purchase price as soon as you enter the country irrespective if it's been bought from a dealer or privately. Also, there's a duty charge (which from memory is an additional 5%) unless you're buying from NZ or USA.
Claverton is right. You will get slammed with import tax when you bring a yacht in from overseas.
There was a story going on a few years back about a retired Australian couple who spent most of their money on a yacht in the States. Then when they sailed it back to Oz they got hit with the bill and couldn't afford to enter the country. Last I heard they were in limbo in Asia somewhere.
I thought i read somewhere if the boat is American or NZ made the Gst is waved or maybe that was the stamp duty?
I believe that things have changed since we and the US entered a free trade agreement. Worth checking, suggest call or check the Dept of Trade or whatever it is called this week website.
the free trade agreement means you don't have to pay the 5% duty, but doesn't affect GST and this still has to be paid. Obviously importing as a fair bit more attractive 12 or 18 months ago when $AU was well above $US

Jeepers! Thanks loose change I have read it and its looking mighty clear I won't be bringing one back from the states by ship or passage!
I have read it and it basically says "Forget it! There is no cheap way to import a yacht."
I guess they have written that screed to weed out the wannabes.
My thought is if you had a American friend saling on a visa in Australian waters and he wanted to sell his boat and fly home I wonder if this would still be applicable.....perhaps a loophole!
