No GST on private sales, providing the transaction is handled wholly by the buyer and the seller without the intervention of lawyers and the like. If there are any government charges after the sale, then on those there will be a GST component eg. Stamp Duty. If the sale is handled by a used boat dealer then his price should already include GST as it is illegal to show a price without GST.

You are talking about sales within Australia aren't you?? There is GST on the brokerage fee which the seller should be paying. No agent, no GST.

Importing a yacht is a different thing. I believe GST is charged on importation of the yacht based on what it is worth in the Australian market and Australian Customs ( as bent a bunch that God ever put breath into) would require a survey to be done (by one of their mates) to assess it's value.

Australian Customs is where the police sent their bent pennies. Didn't you watch Underbelly - Tale of Two Cities??

Southace there is a Beneteau 40 in Melbourne coming on the market. It is supposed to be in pretty good nic. It could be right up you ally as it is a center cockpit with shoal draft. I think it is about 12 years old. He offered it to me as a trade for my boat. I believe you would get it around the 150k mark. He is coming up to look at my boat next week, let me know if you want his details and I can get them off him when he comes. That boat that BobFord mentioned from Rivergate was in fairly poor condition. The bloke that bought it had it up on the slip at Scarborough just after he bought it in December while I had my boat up. He was up for a lot of repairs before he was sailing in back to WA.

Thanks for that post Jode5. This is the Saebreeze Grapevine in action.

I'm getting rather fussy!

I'm looking for 42 ft to 45ft , 2005 and upwards , ducted aircon, prefer 2 cabin, leather upolstery , CC but am open for aft cockpit....cockpit dodger and clears....possible washing machine! 220k max....

I'm starting to like the look of this one that just came online!

Benetau, Jenneau, French crap that are worse than their cars.

It is funny how all the ads for those yachts concentrate on their interiors rather than the more important on deck situations.

So are you saying that this yacht just doesn't shake your booty at all??

Spoke to a guy on the weekend that showed me onboard his Beneteau 40, tried to tell me how good French boats are. Also told me American boats are crap and the hunters B&R backstayless rigs are known to fall down....funny I can't find any info on the subject! It seems people's opinons travel far and wide with boat designs!

All these Bavarias have volvo engines and most with over 1000 engine hours. The duck board transom looks cluttered for two divers and gear. My budget is 200 to 215k I would rather spend the full money on a later model boat rather than have to spend the money later on replacing stuff. Also I'm not a fan of forward v berths and aft quarter berths!

Thanks anyway for your recommendation but it just feels to me Bavaria is not for me.....I'm still thinking Hunter or jeanneau at present.

I already found that listing there are only two 2006 models for that price that I can find on the planet! I found a 45 in Fiji but its 2004 model and it looks well used.
Thanks anyway.

There's an awful lot of those "crappy" French Beneteau, Jeanneau or even Dufor floating around the worlds oceans.
Just for the record, I drive one of those "worse than crap" French cars and have done so for nearly thirty years, no way in hell would you find me in a Holden or Ford.

Well from what I have read Hunters are very well built and its only the people that actually own them that have good things to say about them! American made has always had a good reputation. We are talking Boing vs Airbus here! Chevy vs Peugeot! But I could just swing both ways as I do like the jeanneau layout and lines.

A bit too much generalization there but I can see where you're coming from.
These big production boat's are perfectly fine for their target market and especially to cruise around in the Meds.

But don't forget, the frenchies make some very decent yachts as well, just check out the www.allures.com/en/ www.garcia-yachting.com the older ones e.g. Garcia Passoa are certainly top cruising yachts.
I'd certainly be perfectly happy cruising around on this www.garcia-yachting.com/voilier.php?id=39

LooseChange I don't think you're right on not having to pay GST when importing a yacht, if that's what you meant.

I looked at all of this a couple of years ago and pretty sure you get hit up for GST on the purchase price as soon as you enter the country irrespective if it's been bought from a dealer or privately. Also, there's a duty charge (which from memory is an additional 5%) unless you're buying from NZ or USA.

Claverton is right. You will get slammed with import tax when you bring a yacht in from overseas.

There was a story going on a few years back about a retired Australian couple who spent most of their money on a yacht in the States. Then when they sailed it back to Oz they got hit with the bill and couldn't afford to enter the country. Last I heard they were in limbo in Asia somewhere.

You are correct in saying that GST is payable on a foreign yacht.
When I said no GST, I was answering the the question that Southace had asked which I assumed to mean buying in Australia.
For overseas purchases this should clear it up.

I believe that things have changed since we and the US entered a free trade agreement. Worth checking, suggest call or check the Dept of Trade or whatever it is called this week website.

the free trade agreement means you don't have to pay the 5% duty, but doesn't affect GST and this still has to be paid. Obviously importing as a fair bit more attractive 12 or 18 months ago when $AU was well above $US

My thought is if you had a American friend saling on a visa in Australian waters and he wanted to sell his boat and fly home I wonder if this would still be applicable.....perhaps a loophole!
