Hi All,

I am new to sailing, still at the early beginnings but looking to potentially buy a small boat.

Saw this add and thought to check if anyone knows anything about this boat - any history I should be wary about?

www.boatsales.com.au/boats/details/1984-HUTTON-Bay-Cruiser/SSE-AD-6570884

Interesting comment that the boat is well known within the Port Phillip sailing clubs, so appreciate if anyone from VIC who knows anything about this boat can share some details.

Many thanks in advance.

The Hutton 24 is a quarter tonner hull from the seventies with a lid. This one has a nice interior but looks like it's set up as a club racer with a fractional rig and headsails on hanks. For a first boat I would suggest one of the other production boats of that era with a furling headsail. If possible I would also try for a boat with an inboard diesel and headroom. Plenty about for that sort of money.

I noticed it when it first came up. Good buy but a lot of work to get it looking spiffy. Too many people don't want to get their hands dirty! Younger people want the interiors to look like they are never lived in. I'm happy if I can stand up and make a cup of coffee and have a place to sit down!

It is a really good stamp of a yacht but it needs to be yarded for the major work it needs.

From the pics it looks like the main bulkhead carrying the chain plates needs to be replaced. Apart from that the rest of it looks fairly good and not too hard to fix. The internal glass moulded furniture is a big plus if it does not require removal and refitting.

But like I say, if the main bulkhead needs replacing, it is a MAJOR job.

Remember the Supersails from the seventies that were going to set the world on fire? Heres your chance. It's worth buying just for the Bruce anchor on the bow!

I couldn't help myself. I had to go and look at it. It is the real deal Swanson Snug and in reasonable nick. Went there with trailer and $200 cash but could not justify buying it when I have 2 Walker Bay 8s, an Avon Redcrest and another duckie needing repair.

Assembled it is 9' 6" long and I reckon could be good to row with 4 people.

Thanks for putting it on.
A lot of boat for the money but I would be wary of no motor photo, aluminium build, deep draft.

10HP engine is light on for that size of boat, and is that Italian brand supported in OZ?

10 times better than any Walker Bay. I had a look at the Swanson dinghy years ago when a cruiser was passing through. The owner reckoned he could bolt it together in the water!

Take your pick, one with a well known pedigree, the other, well needs some work!
70K seems a bit on the high side, it's well equipped but the interior is very basic.
4K one would probably end up being as expensive by the time it's done. What do you think? Anyone know the history?

Better but I don't think 10 times.

This one needs a bit of fine tuning of the joint to get a straight run on the keel and strakes of the clinker shape.

As a bail out package on an ocean sailing yacht they are perfect.

With Berrimilla you are buying a piece of history and a whole lot of equipment. The 4 grand boat was on the market some time back cheap. Now with the interior ripped out forward and no engine there is a real lot of work ahead. There is a Brolga here with above-average teak interior and a 20hp Bukh that the owner paid 20 grand for.

Good value. The advert should have interior photos and the inventory could additionally do with 2 jibs and a kite, but it looks solid.

Yeah I agree the 4K one would be a lot of work. Nice to have it exactly how you like it but large sunk cost which is still going on an old hull. Don't think I am quite up for such a project but do like the Brolga.

It would be a hard sell to the wife and family though. "But think of the adventures" would be the tag line
