When it happens to me a mate said " you ain't be around if you haven't been aground" and a mate of both of ours replied " boating is floating, otherwise they'd have wheels" both true comments!

Southace,

Mate, join the club,

No shame and no blame.

Last time I ran aground it cost me a drive plate. Who cares. We are doing what we like to do.

The last time I ran aground I was chatting with my crew and not concentrating, it won't happen again. It's one of the lessons we learn that tells us we are not as smart as we think we are, (at least in my case) as long as you come out of it unscathed there is nothing to worry about and hopefully something learned.

Were sailors mate, sooner or later we have a few hiccups.

Cheers,

Rick

Wow bill how do you know that?

The dumb thing was I didn't check the tide before I did it. I was actually in the turn parallel to the shore as I could see the bottom 1.6 meters and because I run aground on this angle both the keel and Skeg touched bottom so it was hard to screw her out with reverse.

Actually I got no movement what so ever. Forward or reverse towed from stern with 40hp tinnie pushed with my zodiac and winched with 20 meters of kedged anchor!
My main concern on the rising tide this morning is flooding but with 1 hour to go before re floating all is looking good in the bilges!

I don't understand why you're not on MORE of a heel than you are. Boat appears to be standing almost upright on the keel. What's that about?

Doesn't look like the most comfortable of nights..
Did you manage to do a bit of an inspection (or was there more water then what it looks like in the photo).

It was getting dark, I inspected the prop and shaft it has prop speed on the shaft and prop. I don't like the prop it cavitates I will look into the correct folding/feathering prop in the future. Anyway she past the test. Thank god for a shaul draft and skeg hung rudder!

I would like to think that the last time I ran aground was the last time I ran aground. Then again, I like to explore out of the way places.
Perhaps the next time I run aground might be the last, lol.

Where exactly is this??? Sandy or rocky bottom??

With community edits on Navionics you could mark this position and put this photo on it to let others know not to go there.

About the same on both sides about 8 months with hempels Sands.

She sat on the sea grass just one meter from the green line where the sand started to the beach.

Which is what I did last time I ran aground. I don't suppose anyone who saw it was fooled into thinking I'd done it on purpose but it sort of helped with my frame of mind.

I did intenationaly ground Tulak just to check how she/he will take it. If Tulak was not to past this test I was ready to dighy myself to the shore, he he.Tulak layed gently with tide going out with port side lowest, facing the tide direction after change,I did not made any atempt to lay Tulak on the star board for tide direction change. Walking on dry, prop was cleaned, s/s ruder was cleaned (shoping bag of wegetation was colected). For four hours Tulak was on 45deg and it was PITA to make coffe (gimbaled stove would not leveled.) what was plump or horisontal become 45deg, very uncomfortable. . Tide changed and for about 1/2hour Tulak was shaken by beeing lifted and "touching" ground just bump, and bump again, no water commig over gunwell. Tulak is early fibreglass product. In 78 fibreglass (GRP) was ment to replace wood planking and some manufacturers build F/G houls as thick as a thicknes of wood planking would be caled for. No joke, where vertical of the keel is curving into botom of the houl it is ~3/4 or 19 mm thick. To sumeup Tulak will dry on its side planed or accidential with easy on sandy bottom.

So that would put you across the bay south east of Port Lincoln and directly south of Boston Island. Looks like a nice protected cruising ground in that area.

I once seen a woman sail into Mooloolaba and run aground in her new ferro fijien she hit the bank just before the duck pond around 2am. by sunrise she was asleep on the high side along side the cabin.

We tryed towing the 20 something tonne concrete with my mates 60 foot motor junk.....with no movement what so ever! I just watched! Then dads army arrived and tried again with there Shark cat and twin 140s with no avail Note by this time she was high and dry!

By 1300 the yacht was completely submerged. Following day she was pumped dry on the rising tide......

I managed to take a peak in side....full sized house hold fridge/freezer Etc......

A few cheap big battery's where exchanged to my mate that tried the tow....the rest was history!
Apparently she had no coverage for insurance and the marine yard took ownership of her new yacht!

although Im fully insured that story was in the back of my mind one I realised I was going to lay dry all night. Moral! Make sure you can sit on both sides without flooding on rising tides!

You can see my mark where I lost my Marsh anchor...she ran aground on the green island bank!

Take solace in the old saying "There are those that have AND there are those that are going to !" A bit like landing with your gear up........
