I know I'm late with this post, but I have to say that's a disgustingly sexist comment. There are plenty of great sailors who happen to be women.

Sectorsteve
When im racing and its windy as hell, on a 34 foot race boat im bloody ready to jump off UPWIND of the boat everytime we lose control due to spinnaker issues or something.

The last thing you need when out of control is someone in the drink.
As a skipper you have enough going on watching for other boats trying to get back under control. Making sure the crew are taking the right actions to retrieve the situation. Just what you need a crew member jumping over.

Scenario small child (can not swim) falls off boat skipper and one crew...
as the crew member what do you do????

First of all he should be waring a life jacket and depending on situation clipped on.
As a senario you need more information.
Is the boat underway?
If so how fast? You would be surprised how quick you would be away in no time.
Is it inshore or offshore?
Can you swim?

Not really sure what you are trying to get at with the senario.

under way, 10 knots +, offshore, and yes Crew member can swim,
no life jackets on anyone.

myself and a skipper i use to work with spent many hours going over this one.

It was a vary real possibility on the boat we worked on.

the only correct response is to ,Do not jump overboard till you are instructed by the captain!

The reason is:
The captain is trying to retrieve one man overboard they don't need 2 or if mum or dad decided to join the party 3 men overboard without the help of crew.

Do what your skipper says even if he is a tool!!!

Till the boat is sunk stay out of the piss

I was wearing those glasses hence l still have my eyesight.
I noticed it, but surprisingly did not hurt much. The sunny took the brunt of the slap.

As far as SandS's comment and Chris 249's long forgotten salvo are concerned, l am not a misogynist, l am a misanthrope and let's leave it at that.

First and most serious issue is why the hell wasn't a child who can't swim not wearing a life jacket offshore?
I agree whole hardly with staying onboard as I said in my response to steve last thing a skipper needs to worry about is someone in the drink.
At 10+ knts in time you would be a few hundred meters away.

Not to mention the late Margaret Thatcher who was commander in chief of the most recent naval battles in our time and ultimately won. It also can be a bad idea to get on their wrong side

10 mistakes I've made over the years (or sometimes a crew member).

blog.arribasail.com/2016/03/10-boating-mistakes-to-avoid.html

Only last week during an overnight passage one crew member forgot to dog a hatch properly and got doused in seawater.

Having a good check list and actually using it is always a good idea.

Is plev the enemy of all disabled sailors/disabled people in general? Does it take a special person to kick a person who is attempting to recover from an injury?
