Went down to the boat to check the engine and found 3 broken engine mounts one left lucky me not going out in 4 m and 40knots Coral Sea chop again. More money to burn and tomorrow try to fix I need a little help with this one, engines are not my skill set, can it be the initial installation? of the engine I was knocked flat on the last sail could that of caused the damage?

Yesterday I sanded my 14 metre mast preparing for painting. I was then convinced by the rigger's painter not to paint the mast, but instead to sand it back completely to bare aluminium and treat it. Although I was looking forward to a sparkling white mast, I am more looking forward to not spending shatloads of time and some dollars painting it. And I am told that paint is a major culprit in corrosion and I will never have to worry about that again. Sold.

So I spent most of today carefully sanding the stick back to get every skerrick of paint off and leave a tidy pattern. It was then treated with clear metal sealer.

The product:

A good couple of days' work.

I have already mostly painted the boom so... that may look a bit weird. We'll see. If it's bad enough I'll strip it I suppose.

Dr Rog
all Ive found out so far is caustic soda will remove the color from anodizing.
Anodizing also is absorbed into the aluminum by 10 % so sanding anodizing back to bare aluminum is out of the question
Do not want to loose 10 % of my masts
So for me its a sand clean and probably a two pack primer

settled on a shutter insert

I will use a router and insert the shutter into the original forward cabin door after the shutter is cleaned up and trimed and add a brass door push plate

Hi HG

When you take the masts off her are you going to replace the standing rigging

the fellow on the ketch I was talking to at Kettering last weekend said he did his own using Sta-Loc fittings www.stalok.com/ and said it was a fairly simple job

Are you intending to strip the rivited fittings of the masts and booms and duralac and refit them at the same time

Hi HG

Cant help with a choice of furlers

My Spacey has a furler but the Sailmaster is hank on

I dont actually mind the hank on and one old bloke who sails single handed out of here runs a light line from the head of the sail down through the hanks through the shackle at the tack of the sail and back to the cockpit and when he lets the halyard (that also runs back to the cockpit) go he pulls on the light line and this pulls the sail down on to the deck

I normally have someone else on the boat so i just get them to keep it head to wind and go forward and drag it down while keeping some tension on the halyard and tie it to the rail

I am trying to make do with what i have on mine because we still owe a bit one the house and my mrs would rather pay the house off than spend money on the boat that we would probly never get back if we had to sell her (or found something better that we like)

I have been told that this boat will have to do for the forseeable future and that i already spend enough on it for normal maintenance items

Probably the only thing i would not mind on mine is a wind direction indicator in the cockpit but for the moment i just rely on my ears and the windex at the top of the mast

We only fart around in the Huon and Channel area so we dont need a lot of fancy gear

What colour are you intending to do the masts ?

Regards Don

The colour is only dye that's added to the anodising tank. The anodising is not "absorbed", it's not like case hardening, the anodising is the aluminium. All that happens is you are applying a controlled layer of either dyed or plain colour oxide on to the first few thou of the surface of the aluminium. Anodising is really simple to do, even at home. All it takes is a non-metallic tank and a source with which to put a current through the bath (caution, Sulfuric acid).

I suppose as a test you could sand a small patch in a less obvious place and see how long it takes to get back to alloy colour

Rather than sand all the way back to base alloy just sand enough to key the surface enough for paint to adhere to it. In areas where there is noticeable corrosion, those you will have to clean right back to bare metal and then treat. Don't make more work for yourself than what you need to.

We are a bit spoilt for scenery down here

At the moment we have had some nice days but no wind so the sailing has been a bit quite but the reflections are good

Big day out thats what I had at Willaimstown
1 Removed the masts
2 Help tidy all the mast rigging and ropes
3Organize a surveyor
4organize a lift out
4 find a surveyor at short Notice
5 survey done
6 Organize insurance
7 organize a berth
8 drop in and see Mangrovefrog
9 make a run for it to Patterson Lakes
I cant think of the name right now but the mizzen mast mount thought id place a mat over it to I did not stub my tow
Big mistake as I jumped down into the cockpit and ankle gave way it sore as
Had to make Patterson lakes before sun set no lights

So I guess you could say Ive off street parking now its a mill pond in there 5 mins from home Ill get a lot done now
The old Bukh seems to have loved the run was getting 6.8 plus knots today by my nav app
