King George River WA. A bit shallow getting in but worth the effort
Fantastic pot, Riffraff!
Very first night sail tonight. Wife and I ducked out of Q Station out the heads under big moon, nice 10 knot westerly, no swell, clear skies. Magic!
Not magic iPhone pic...

What a magic spot... great photo.
Sailing on Botany Bay last Sunday
Is that a Joe Adams?
Yeah it's a Mottle33 mark 2 or more exactly a Naut 33

Not many people know the difference. The keel position was corrected with the Naut 33 for one and the overall build is better.

Jealous as hell Riffraff,
Thats my ultimate cruising destination. I was there in my 20's as a deckie on a friend of my fathers fishing boat but just can't wait to get up there on my own boat.
Hopefully in the next few winters I will get there.
You sure as hell know how to rub it in,
Enjoy,
Rick.
Phillip,
You will see similar signs in Townsville.
We have a 4m saltie playing hide and seek with the locals. Makes going for a swim a bit more fun. lol.
Island Head Creek on the day I arrived. About a month ago.
Island Head Creek as I saw it for the next six days.
There was still a decent wind when I left Island Head so I had a quick trip to the Percys. The distance shown on the plotter is the distance to Mackay. It was just after this pic was taken that I altered course to go to the Percy's.
My crewmate had decided he had had enough of strong winds and lousy weather so headed home when we got as far as Yeppoon. The best sailing we have had for the whole trip started at Yeppoon. I enjoy sailing solo but it was nice to have him aboard for the long stretches up the NSW coast. It's just a pity he picked the wrong time to go home and missed the best part of the trip.

Good Job HG. Great pics, but, is that Davy Crockett you've got on board ????
Spent the weekend on the bay, like HG said, beautiful winter days.
Woke up to the sun shining through the cabin window

Yesterday I sailed from Goldsmith Is to Thomas Island for lunch then onto Shaw Island just inside Burning Point.
Today I motor sailed from Shaw Island to May's Bay on Whitsunday Island {BOM's 20 knots was only 3}
Hi Phillip,
Thomas is one of my favorite places down that way, so is Goldsmith for that matter.
The anchorage just behind burning point is a nice sheltered spot and so is neck bay if the wind gets to much east in it.
Im not sure when you expect to get up here but my wife and I are heading down to the Whitsundays for a month in about six weeks time.
If we cross paths I will leave the car for you at the marina and the keys in the marina office.
You have a few choices up here,
Breakwater Marina.
The Townsville Motor Boat Club
And the duck pond, which is a reasonably pleasant spot just outside the marina. I think with the duckpond you can register your dinghy with the marina and use their facilities for a small fee.
The marina and motor boat club both charge about the same but parking and facilities are a bit better at the marina I think. Both are central to the main part of town but in Townsville the better shopping is at the major centers in the suburbs. I will leave a GPS navigator in the car for you.
Have fun, hope your enjoying the warmer weather.
Thanks for that Rick you are very generous.
I've also PM you.
Phillip

For the last two days I have been motoring around the Point Nepean, Queenscliff area to get a feel for the place, both days arriving at the heads an hour before slack on the ebb.
Drifted around for a while fishing with a whole slimey mackeral just off the bottom with no takers. Also trailed two lures, one deep and one on the surface.......not a single hit! Too cold for the Kings but I thought i would hook a few salmon. The highlight of the trip was seeing what looked in the distance, like a sailing dingy crossing a kilometer inside the heads. Looking through the binoc's it turned out to be a 15 ft ketch rigged tinny complete with lee boards and a small outboard. The wind was a steady 5 to 10 knot breeze from the north and once across, she sailed east straight up the shipping channel. Forgive the pic quality as I only had my iPhone with me.

The only drama of the trip was when a catamaran approached the rip two hours after slack, attempting to make an exit against the tide. I could see she almost came to a stanstill and knowing there is a strong easterly set as well, was wondering if the skipper will turn back and make the attempt at a more suitable time. Not so! I had her on Marine Traffic and was about to radio as she approached the reef and Corsair Rock when Melbourne Radio gave her a call warning the skipper she was approaching the shallow water and suggesting they head north. The skipper replied he was about to head north but instead hoisted the headsail and made headway at 2 knots. Judging by the track, I reckon he passed very close to Corsair but being of shallow draft had a bit more room than a keel boat.

I have a sort of plan to head to the Whitsundays about this time next year, so I'm enjoying your posts about the trip from here to there.
hey Guitz .........when you say you had her on marine traffic is that AIS that you are talking about ? ?

yes, Marine Traffic is an app on my iPhone that uses AIS, I don't have an AIS transceiver on board.

It's a bit like Flightradar24, but for boats.

Well on the weekend the little S and S 34 won (on handicap) the last race of the SYC winter offshore series. It was a 20 - 30 kt westerly and she flew up wind to pass some of the newer more fancied yachts. Needless to say I was very chuffed.
