nothing better than challenging yourself with a solo sail then going asleep with Dark Side of the Moon playing in the background after a few reds.

It's nice sometimes to be by yourself not having to worry about upsetting others.

Well Done TheSelkie, that's awesome.

What I really enjoy is single-handing, but sailing in company of other single-handers, you get to challenge yourself without the worry & responsibility of crew aboard(your free to make mistakes & no-one notices ....hopefully), but you have the camaraderie & laughs at the next port (& along the way!), you pool your nav & weather ideas, which means you leave port a little more confident you have concurred about the weather etc with other skippers.

Thanks guys for your encouragement. I really do appreciate it. It means so much.

@ Southace...I seem to instil more confidence in my family than in myself. I had my 'wingman' - my ex husband who is now just my friend - cast me off and arrange to be at the pontoon to catch me on return. He says to me, 'why don't you just go to Moreton for the night? The kids are with me anyway.' So I spent the next ten minutes prior to departure convincing him that, no, I was not ready for an overnighter by myself just yet. I DEFINITELY was going to be back this afternoon. If he had not heard from me by, say 3 o'clock, something was wrong!!
Then, my wingman has to interrupt our 15yo daughter mid afternoon-rant about school or whatever, to tell her that he needs to go and wait at the pontoon because her mother is caught out in the storm on the boat by herself. Apparently she laughed, waved her arms and said, 'ah, she's alright. She's been out in worse than this. She knows what she's doing'.

@ Seabird...it used to be a tradition for my daughters and I in our previous boat to crank up Pink Floyd on the way home from a weekend at Moreton.
...and yes, it is nice not worrying about upsetting others. I was even singing ;) And not having to constantly remind my adolescents that only admirals and a....s sit in companionways! The Folky is such a perfect boat for one person.

@ShaggyBaxter...ooh, now there's a thing!! Need to get my nav lights wired up...weather permitting...I'm up for it!! I'll meet you mid Bay somewhere See you beforehand though, as I have your caffeine tool to assist staying awake

Hey,,maybe we could have a moonlight Seabreeze meet??

And here I was thinking I was the only one who cranked up Pink Floyd out on the water!!

I have this theory that loud Pink Floyd attracts the dolphins - at least the ones in Lake Macquarie like it

Try some classical music and see what happens with the dolphins. They are quite intelligent creatures.

Hi all

We had a public holiday in Tassie today so myself, my wife and a mate i sail with went for a sail down the river from Port Huon, around Huon Island, into Eggs and Bacon Bay for a quick lunch and back up the river to Port Huon

Total distance as the crow flies is around 28 nm but today the wind was blowing straight down the river all day which gave us a nice run down to Huon Island but mutiple tacks to get back up the river.

Not sure how many tacks we put in to get back home but we clocked up a lot more than 28cnm

We left Port Huon at 10am and returned around 7.30 so it was a fairly big day out on the water

There was a fair bit of breeze blowing at times and the river was a bit choppy until we turned the corner in the last section so we had the rail under a few times and saw 7 knots up wind briefly but most of the time we were doing 5 to 6 which i was happy with www.facebook.com/sylvia.kerr.90813/videos/596817427136821/ (a bit of dodgy video here)

Regards Don

Hi Donk.
I have just looked up Port Huon on google maps and see that you have fantastic cruising grounds down there.

Were I wealthy enough I might buy a premises and yacht down there to spend my summers there and my winters up here in Bundaberg with what I have.

Mid winter days in Bundaberg are amazing.

Wednesday actually, not today :) Just out into Deception Bay for, what turned out to be longer than I planned. As is my wont, once I escape to the water, I am loathe to return to the shackles of land.

First sail alone on my little Folkboat. Bliss!! I am addicted to singlehanding!!

'Mark Occy' the octopus strap took care of the helm for most of the day, requiring only an occasional adjustment here and there. Aria was amazingly well balanced in the conditions of that day - 7-13 knots of breeze - reaching and close-hauled. Yes, after I took the pic, I did crack the jib off (and adjust the cars) .

I'm a very, very happy Folkboat mistress ...and a little more confident now for having made the leap of faith to take her out alone

Wow Wow Wow..... I know just how you feel.... nothing can take away the joy and pride of first solo!! Very happy for you. Go Girl!!
I'm planning a 12 or so hour trip up to Yamba soon which may or may not be solo. Best part now is it doesn't matter. I'm quite happy to solo... sailing that is.... Not entirely happy with the solo life in general. But do love being out there with only myself to worry about. A night sail is definitely on the to do list also. I reckon I'll be good to make it to the next seabreeze get together at Moreton.

Thanks McNaughtical

you've been very conspicuous by your absence . Lovely to hear from you

Yep...I was on a high for quite a few days afterward. I wanted to head out the following day but strong S/SE have been blowing ever since. Even went down and put a prophylactic reef in the main, rather than having to do it out there, but through this and that, haven't managed to get out again. Feeling very RESTLESS and ANTSY .

The trip up to Yamba sounds lovely...nice destination at the end of it . And likewise, I too will be there for the next Seabreeze get-together .

I'm more than happy to solo....I'll fill you in on my romantic misadventures in your Romance thread McNaughtical

When Jessica Watson was doing her around the world trip I posted the same video of Cool Change on her blog page. Not sure if she ever saw the post but I thought the song fitted well with her adventure.

Some trivia, Cool Change was the first song ever played on Triple M (FM 104) in Brisbane. It was the first time I heard the song and I have loved it ever since.

Yes, I love the video. It's very high-latitude in terms of marine life. Cool haha

I'm sure Glenn Shorrock must have some sailing experience as the lyrics have such a deep and genuine appreciation of what all of us know and love so well.

Hi all

Moreton Bay was fun yesterday - low to mid 20's gusting to 28 kts. I went for a bash around Green Is, out to Hope Banks and back to Manly. Wind is one thing, but the waves were certainly an experience for me as a newbie sailor. My little boat got up to over 8kts which may have been due to surfing for a bit here and there to add to the excitement !

Tomorrow it seems to be forecast on willyweather for much the same and then for Monday at 27kts.

Anybody interested ?

kk

Cheers Cisco & Tracey. It was certainly some fun.

Tracey, my boat is an Albin Vega 27 (a Swedish cousin to your folkboat maybe , but made out of fibreglass in 1969 and sailed out here from Sweden a few years ago .....)

kk, lovely What is her name???

Maybe we should have a little Scandi regatta in Moreton Bay sometime? Have you seen the lapstrake, varnished timber Nordic Folkboat down at Manly?? Absolutely stunning!!

I'm thinking about entering the QCYC Vintage Yacht Regatta in the June long weekend. Would you be interested in entering your boat? Don't worry about being a newbie, I won't be racing seriously. Good chance I will be sailing solo or, even if my daughters can wrench themselves away from their cellos, violins, and singing Italian arias to come and sail on Aria, I really don't think I'll be running a spinnaker

cool!! See you there Apparently there's Classic/Vintage regattas down at Manly as well. Next one is in March??? I don't know any more than that.

I'm still trying to do a WAGS. Well, follow the fleet around as I need to join the Club still. Usually heading back in as they're all coming out to start, though, as I have to pick the kids up from school.

Yesterday, not today, took my sister out for a few hours. Out to Deception Bay Red where, as the tide turned the wind dropped out, and there we sat for a little while until the wind reset itself. A very leisurely sail back to Scarborough by which time the WAGS fleet were making their way out to the Leads.

It was a pleasure to have my big sister aboard. Some sisters go shopping or get their nails done together, and that's cool. More power to them. For us though, our bonding time is best spent messing about on boats.

My sis told me how happy she was that, with me, she did not have to wear her usual sailing attire of t-shirt emblazoned with "Do Not Shout At Me", that she always wears when sailing with her partner. Sweet sister, you're welcome anytime! And I promise NEVER to have you pull the anchor up by hand on a 30ft cat. Ppfffftttt

Hi all
I have been reading and enjoying the entries on the forum over the last few days from as far back as 2014. Am new to this site and am looking forward to future postings. I have returned to the sailing scene after about 25yrs when I recently bought a lovely Compass Careel22. It is an early '80s boat in improbably good condition for its age and the initial familiarising sail down the Parramatta River from Rhodes to Balmain under mainsail only and in fickle, light winds and unfavourable tides on the return trip was a great reintroduction. Am headed down the Harbour on Sunday with an old school mate, hopefully with a genoa up as well, and looking to chase up a few fish off Taronga Zoo or inside North Head.
Cheers
Greg

Thanks for the welcome HG.
The 'cruising caravan' side of the Careel has a certain attraction, a trip down to Jervis Bay is a very attractive prospect but it will be a slow and careful drive (I have followed and been involved in the often confusing debates about all-up towing weights etc of Trailer Sailers) BTW, do regular East Coast sailors know that Jervis Bay and Port Stephens are the 2 known 'nurseries' for juvenile Great White sharks; born at 1.5m growing to 3m whilst in their juvenile years…thankfully, it seems they are after stuff like Australian Salmon and Kingfish at this stage rather than us (just relating back to all those posts from Nth Qld cruisers regarding crocs and the deadly stone fish)
Steady breezes to you HG
