So it seems it is the season for the southern birds to fly north for warmer climes.
Here in Bundaberg the urge to migrate is hardly felt with the fair borough of Bundaberg being rated as having the best rated climate in Australia and the 5th best climate in the world based on the least temperature change between summer and winter.
Added to that is the beautiful Burnett River, boasting an all weather entry, multiple anchoring options, full and comprehensive yacht services (sorry, no riggers in town except me) and the cheapest provisioning on the east coast due to the town being the welfare capital of Australia. They say it is the fat arse capital of Australia too and from what I see in the streets it is hard to argue the point.
That all being as it may be, those of the Seabreeze community that have met with my good self on their way north or south can only say that their welcome has been warm, hospitality and logistic support offered genuine and generous.
So if any of you southern birds flying north enter the sacred Burnett River, I expect to hear from you.
Probably won't catch you on the way up as with the forecast at the moment we will more than likely head from The straights directly to Musgrave. Forecast, 10 to 15kt southwesterly for most of the week.
Hey jode can you do me a favour possibly (if you can be bothered!)raise a phone up mast and see if you can get reception?
Ill still be going out regardless to Musgrave but will be limited to long weekends if no reception.
Sectorsteve, my brother was there this week and had no reception at Musgrave and he has a booster with an antenna up the mast. He did have reception at Fitzroy Reef as that is where he rang me from. I will see how my booster goes when I get there as my antenna is 60 feet above the water.
Jode5 I would assume that was with Telstra?
Yes Telstra
recently i had a 6 week break from smart phones. i was using a really old samsung. no internet or anything, just phone and texts. Ill tell you what the clarity on this phone was amazing. Im pretty sure alot of the older phones had better antennas in them. But maybe its the 3G network.
My old Nokia (can't remember the model) had service most of the way up the East coast out to about 20 nm wasn't till I went to iPad , iPhone about 5 years ago I'm seeing bad coverage on both when offshore..

and its for this reason im taking my older phone. i really dont think the new phones antennas are as good as the older phones.
When we are in remote areas we use a $75 Telstra Blue tic phone. Works heaps better than the iPhone.
The down side is you can't wifi, screen shot or google. I will head up the east coast after Christmas I hope the iPad iPhone will keep me well! Looked at getting new iPhones and iPads was like $800 for the 6 gave up as the seller told me just a bit quicker processer I think it's really just a big con job! Like why didn't they put the big processer in from the start!
Just been reading about blue tick phones and they are just tested approved phones by telstra for their reception & antenna capabilities. My samsung s5 supposedly is on the list. Interesting !
Ive got a spare iphone 4 and if i ever need to use it cause im.between phones it.gets little reception where i live.
I'm afraid Telstra is the only network that works Cooktown and beyond. It is handy to have a plug in the cockpit to charge the phone if you are using Nacionics, then you can keep the screen on all the time. And download all the map area you need so you will have coverage when you are off network. Don't fall for the itty bitty screens on some phones, the LG G4 is about as small as you can go to be useful - but it is not as waterproof as the Samsung.

I have plenty of charging options but also have alot of good spare batteries for phone that i keep charged for navionics. - about 5 days worth. Recently when my Galaxy S5 died, i was trying to get another on my telstra plan but no longer available. Only phones that were available were the latest Samsung S8 but with no option to switch out batteries which is a must for me. These also cost $1800 and are made of glass. Crikey. Do people not question this stuff? THey bascially turned the Samsungs into iphones- un user friendly where you have to send away or buy special tools just to change the battery. So i bought another S5 from gumtree for $180. Best phones and i can swap out batteries and have lods of storage on an Ext SD card.
Im pretty much relying on The phone and ipad with a garmin gps for my GPS plotter. Ive got all paper charts as well and know how to use them. I do have a Garmin Handheld but it lacks heaps of detail. Screens so tiny also.

I totally agree that new phones are a scam - I killed my last phone and was shocked at the price of new unlocked - but the previous model of the same make was a fraction of the price on the net and really does the same things. My chart plotter Navionics charts cut out at Rosselin Bay and I am too mean to pay $250 for the next SD card north but by planning the next route on the phone Navionics and the AUS charts on Memory Map to see that there is nothing bad to run into, then using the large scale generic chart in the plotter to monitor course and time to go, I get by very well.
Finally we're away. We left home just after 4am this morning and are currently just off Mooloolaba. Our eta at Wide Bay bar is 4pm. Looks like we will be motoring all day as the wind is smack on the nose at 10 knots.
We have the Yellow Brick tracker on which has our track and blog of the trip. Haven't seen any whales yet.
Yellow Brick web site is.

Congratulations Jode5 - nice comments on your yellow brick site. We crossed WBB yesterday and it was pretty good.

We may catch you in the next day or so.
John
Average speed 8 knots. Must be nice! Here I am planning at 5 knots if I'm lucky Syd to port Stephens. 18 hours if I'm lucky!
Heading into Bundaberg for a night or two to wait for some breeze, sick of motoring. Cisco if your round, drop down and say good day, it would be good to catch up again. Our trackers battery went flat today and we did not realise until an hour or so ago, but up and running again now.

Today's log from Gary's Anchorage to Bundaberg.
How about some anchorage photos!

Yesterday's lunch
Not allowed to cook crabs inside.
Were you boiling or steaming the crab?
Boiling, but I think I will steam next time as it took to long to boil. It's only a 2000w induction hot plate.

I was taught up here in qld to break the crab up and fry it in a wok with chilli and stuff just so you can add some flavour rather than mud to them Mud crabs! Your genset must get a work out Jode5!
Flying up the coast now,no wind for 6 hrs now gusting to 30. Reefed main, mizzen and a hankie up front.happily settled at 5.5 knots with bursts to lightspeed of 6.8 lol.near mutiny on board only two pack of chocky biscuits left
