They look good Tim, very nice! I might be up for a set of those myself as I've given my GL1's a fair hiding. As the previous boys said, how much as they're not on the site yet?

Hey guys,
These fins will be available early next month. Price isn't confirmed yet, but will be around $100 - $120 for the quads.

EToriginal said..
Nice Tim, are they suitable for my Vex 8'6 carbon? - really keen to get decent fins on it, but would like a full matching set of 5 if possible

ET,
We also have a 2 + 1 set specifically for the Vex. We have puts loads of R & D into these fins, and have found what we think is the perfect combination.

Hi Jarrod, will these fins be in another colour besides orange for us with the model before?

Got a 10' Evoke. Had a problem putting in the futures side fins supplied with the board. The fins supplied are too big to fit in the slots. I had to spend 10 minutes filing and sanding them down to shape them into the slots.
I'm aware that back and front futures are different depth sizes. This was a product problem. Wasn't a nice feeling buying a board and having issues trying to get into the water with it...

Happy with the board otherwise.

Hi Fishrider...

Got my evoke 7'11 carbon yesterday. Finned it up with same issue...but I've had that same issue on 2 of my firewire surfboards - 1 minute sanding and no probs.

Took the board out after work for a go in onshore 2 foot rubbish and the thing is amazing!!! Very stable [I'm 80kgs] - comparable with my 8'10 Widepoint Starboard. But way lighter and more manoeuverable than the Starboard. Very impressed with how it got into waves early and paddled fast. Pre-surf I was thinking that I'd have to lose 5kg to surf the thing [it's pretty small!], but it handled my weight no worries. Very impressed overall. Taking it out into some better waves tomorrow morn...

yeah they feel like good boards and all...but for a person to buy an evoke SUP and then have to work out how to fit the futures fins that do not fit without modification..... And that's assuming the person has the tools, know how and experience from owning several boards to be able to recognise the problem and how to make the fins work.
It took me about 20 mins actually, trying to force them in first, looking and studying the fin plugs and fins, second guessing mysel******o i have the correct fin depth etc. I tried sanding the front and back edges of the futures for 10 minutes and it still didn't go in at all. I had to get the file tool out and take alot off the fins to get them in.
Then i wondered why they didn't put the fins in at the mega outlet shop for me where i bought it.
... now I'm thinking it would have been nice for them to have already sanded down the fins so they fit right out of the box.

i think it might be the moulded fins they provide with the board. They're not finished properly. I have another brand of futures style fins somewhere...I should try them to see if they go in without drama.

I've had a drama with another SUP ....cheapo brand....the Centre box fin was too thick to go in.

The futures on the evoke were too long to go in. And I think the main problem was the locking tab? at the back of the cheapo futures not shaped perfectly....couldn't go in enough to allow the screw-side of the futures in next.

I would have enjoyed seeing them stress trying to get the fins in at the shop for me on request.

I have the 7'11 carbon and had the same problem with both the stock fins and the JC set I bought separate so I don't think it's a problem with the fins but rather the boxes being a little too tight. I got mine in as a quad with some persuasion (hammer and tea towel) but they're not what I'd call plug and play right now.

Has anyone tried filing down their box a little?

Hi Fishrider,

Can you please PM me your contact details and Jarrod (Head of Sales) or myself will get in touch with you. We are spot checking current stock to establish what the problem could be to make sure that it does not happen again but it looks like these could be one rareties. I have also sent a blastout to our 6 retail stores to see if the staff and managers have had dramas with the stabiliser fins that we give out free with our Waterborn SUPs. This has not been an issue in the past and if there is a fin problem we will rectify it immediately. We freight between 50 - 100 boards a day which does not allow us to test the fins in each board prior to dispatch. Our factories QC every fin box using a set of fins from the same mould and not necessarily the set profided, which in your case could have a fault.

In the mean time send us your details and I will upgrade your current composite fin setup as compensation.

I hope the boards performance has made up for the initial frustration mate and that it is performing as it should. We have invested heavily in our own fins for 2016 and have an actual dedicated setup tailored for this board along with most of our other models.

Look forward to hearing from you and sorting this out mate.

Sorry if I'm stating the obvious, but I once had the same problem until I realised I was trying to fit side fins into rear fin boxes.

Future fin bases (and boxes) come in two different sizes. The rear fin has a shallow base, and there is a little x marked in the back of the box.
The side fins have a deeper base, and have a little f marked on the back of the base.

Rear fins will fit in a side box, but not the other way around.

Hopefully this helps?

Haha, no offence taken. It was all four fins unfortunately, and with both stock and a set of Jackson Close Shapers. Even the centre fin was sticky on both sets if you wanted to slide up and down, but the side fins were worse. Lubing up with some soapy water helped a little but I still had to resort to mallet. To be honest, I was a little relieved to hear someone else having the same problem and it not being an id10t error on my part.

Was reluctant to sand down the fins themselves since they were $200 and would make them loose for other boards, which is why I was curious to know if anyone ever sands down the boxes themselves just a smidgeon.

Tim, if you guys have any suggestions here that would be great. I'm having a lot of fun with the board but it would be nice to play between quad and thruster a bit more without worrying about busting something making the switch.

Slyman...definately dont sand down the fin boxes. Only sand the fins if you need to.

I've had FCS fins that needed sanding before and I've had FCS fin plugs/boxes that I've sanded...and also plugs that I've coated with superglue to build them back up for a tighter fit. Some surfboards... I need to put tissues over the FCS fin plugs before I push the fins in to get a fit with no side movement in the fins when in. I actually like a tight fin box. I've had to force futures fins into other surfboards before...really tight....the problem is getting them out when you want to. But tight is good....no side sway movement!!! like I said it was probably the free composite fins ...the issue I had. the locking tabs not shaped perfectly enough. But they were free right. Can't complain. I got a kick arse fiberglass centre fin with my Evoke which was a quality touch from Thesurfboard warehouse . com ...I'm happy about that.

Tim Burleigh ...thanks for the offer of compensation...but no need. I modified the cheap free fins to make them work with this quality board. The Evoke boards are very nice. Great actually. I'm very happy with my purchase and would recommend them to everyone I know. Took my Waterborn EVOKE Carbon for a test run at the local beach but in horrendous conditions. Surface was a washing machine and wind blowing a gale. I managed to get heaps of waves and I'm really happy with my board. Also tried my new Evoke SUP on flat water on the way home from the shop. I couldn't wait. So excited about this board. I'm on the 10' Evoke so I can't give a proper review or opinion for you lighter guys but I can imagine they are even better ...closer to the original shaped size 7'11....and 9'2.

Maybe if I snap a fin while ripping on the Carbon Waterborn Evoke SUP....i might need to give you a call for some fins.....

I'm loving this angst!!! It makes for some great reading!!!

I'd just like to weigh back in and say that for the sake of 2 minutes sanding I've got an amazing board for next to nothing!... Yeah, i suppose the fins should fit, but hey - maybe that's what you pay the extra 2 grand for with other brands...

7'11 carbon update:
Had it out in chest high great waves, fast and bowly... performed fantastically. Heaps of speed, turns on a dime [quad fin setup], heaps of drive, gets in early. I love it.

Also had it out in head and a half onshore powerful waves - also went great. It gets through the whitewater heaps better than my 9'5 widepoint, and feels almost as stable standing out the back.

G'day all.

I've been reading the posts here and doing a bit of research and have very much had my interest pricked on these ecs boards.
I am 65kg, fit chick. Looking for my first board for crusing with my dog and small wave occasional surfing.

I'd really appreciate any advice on board and paddle as the Mrs has given me the green light to spend!!!!

Cheers in advance.

Thanks for the advice, Fishrider. Having too much fun as a quad right now anyway but will keep this in mind with the rear fins if I play with thruster again. Plus, the Nalu will prob be seeing more action over summer.

Next year's board I'll get Tim's boys to do the hard work for me in the shop before I take it home :-)

Does anyone have experience with the 9'2" Evoke and the 8'11" Allwave? Dimensions are fairly close, just wondering if there is much of a performance difference.

Air sail - my first board was the 8'11 Allwave, and I currently have the 9'2" Evoke ( with 4 or 5 others in between!).

I was quite surprised when the Evoke turned up, the rails are actually quite refined, much smaller & surfboard like compared to the big chunky/round Allwave rails. As such it surfs a little better for me.

But, at 32 wide I do have to move my rear foot around a bit in turns (I'm 78kg).

For me, if it was 30 or 31 inches it would be the perfect all round board, definitely a better bet than the Allwave.

Slightly off topic but the new Fanatics have refined surf rails and tails, subject to board size.
It depends which year/model and size Allwave you are referring to.
I demo'd a Fanatic Pro Wave 8'9" 2012/13 model and thought the rails were not refined enough for what I was looking for, so I bought a 8'10" JP Surf Pro as the rails were more refined.
Recently I demo'd several boards, looking for something around 8 ft or slightly smaller for a summer beach break board (average ability limited the short boards.)
Long story short - I ended up buying a 7'11" Allwave LTD (Carbon) which I was worried about as it is 32" wide but it is designed with the wide point forward and pulls in nicely to the tail with nice shaped rails. It surprised me how well it performed so I bought it.
The Pro Wave and Stubby rails/tail shapes look even better but I still have the JP.

You would need to speak to a dealer as to what year these shapes changed and which sizes do the rails start to get chunky.
They are obviously more expensive than the Evoke's.

Thanks for the replys, Flying High I have the 2014 8'11" HRS, I'm 80kgs and looking for a bit more performance without loosing too much length as I have a distance to paddle to get to my favoured break. They have refined the tails on the Allwave this year but as you say, they are more expensive than the evoke.

I would just call them. Shops pull things from websites often when stock is low but demand is high. That way not one to many buy online before the shop realizes they are one to short for the online orders. M2C

Hi,MvsL,
I just brought the brushed carbon 9'2" not listed on the web site, had to ring around but finally picked up one at the Byron Bay store.
Had a quick surf at Byron, goes well on a wave, coming of a 10' mana had a bit of trouble with balance.Have to go back to flat water and figure out the sweet spot.

Hey Guys,

Just discovered these boards. OMG the price!!! Seems to be sooo much love for em too, particularly the 7'11". You guys seem to be mostly all skinny runts though. I'm 6'4" and 110kgs. Ex-longboard surfer turned to SUPs due to injuries. Are there any big guys out there that have some real world experience to share regarding the 9'2" and the 10'? Also interested in any comparisons with the larger Vex Profusions as well, which also look really nice.

Thanks

Yeti, I'm 94ish and ride the 7'11 no worries. I also have 2 mates round 113ish who have never surfed and now ride the 9'4 last years model and the 9'2 this years model no worries at all, both in carbons. They are both down the line surfers and just starting to do turns. I can't comment on the bigger vex's as I haven't ridden any except a 9' which was my first board. I don't think you can go wrong mate with an evoke. I'm seeing more and more of them out in the waves now. Good luck.
