Full print ad in American Surf Magazine Feb '11 issue. Ad for boardshorts shows a shortboarder doing an aerial over a SUP surfer, landing on and obliterating/killing the sup surfer.
What's with that?
Would of thought there would be enough hate in the lineups already without advertising more violence
Hopefully the impressionable groms have enough brains to know that this isn't cool

Saw a thread about this on the 'Zone. Frankly its disgusting and the ad was by RUSTY surfboards. I am never buying any RUSTY product again and I will be going out of my way to convince my friends and fellow members of my surf club to do the same boycott.

I thought the Ad was kinda funny.

Not so sure what all of the fuss is about. The fun has always outweighed the fact that people thought SUP was kinda gay and like giving up on surfing a long time ago. Like it or not, a lot of people still think this way. My own friends still give me crap about it even.

If you're overly concerned with what people think about you riding a SUP best take up a 'cool' sport. It's too crowded anyway.

One of the reasons I enjoy SUP is that I really dislike all the tribalized idiocy so common in surf culture. People disliking you because you're not a local or you dont rip hard enough or you ride a SUP/Mal/boogie/whatever is sheer idiocy. This ad is exacerbating those attitudes. Being on a SUP means I can paddle away from that crap.

I do not describe myself as a surfer in public because in my experience most surfers are idiots. I'm just a guy who happens to like to surf (and SUP).

I agree i find most surfers to be mindless zombies
I think we live in an age where the kids are trying to outcool each other. The surf industry has the average surfer exactly where it wants it
This is what you must wear, this is what you should ride. This is how you talk. These are your heroes
Noticed how every grom talks like Julian Wilson these days
And that is where my problem lies with advertisements like these
The Kids are watching and learning
We must hate these people now because Rusty told us too
It probably doesn't help that the odd SUP is acting like an idiot in the water as well
Its the same after the fast and furious movies came out
Notice all the kids speeding around in Lancers killing themselves
I know it might sound like a i'm taking it a bit too serious but i think the visual and print media have a lot to answer for

It reminds of the old "Captain Good Vibes" Style of humour , as an Ad it has done it's job the word Rusty is on all the forums at the moment.I don't take it personally it's just water off a ducks back to me but it does nothing for the surf community as a whole.

Geez, I am new to SUP I didnt know there was much of an anti SUP sentiment out there. I must admit though I havent recently shortboarded or SUP'd in areas where its been crowded and agro in the water. I avoid those breaks whenever I can.
I did however see an anti-SUP sticker on a car the other day. It was much like the one in the link below. Says more about the individual displaying it than anything else.

Just connecting the dots.

I also read that Rusty is releasing a SUP specific board short of the same ECO series and is said to be running a double page ad with a SUP rider using his paddle as a machine gun.

Maybe we're all just being played by a companies advertising........... Pretty clever I reckon. Keep in mind that the boardies will be released a little later in the year in the US so they've got some time to play it all out before they go on sale......... That's a lot of exposure in a saturated market.

after a resent surf out manly bower nsw i can see why this ad is in place .
Some guys really dont have a clue about the ocean and the line up and lack of respect for others as they sit out wide and paddle for anything that looks like a wave.
Honestly i love sup but see so many chases lately where guys are in the line up who havnt done there time and dont no nor understand pecking order of surfing they think as they are on some big tanker and they can all of a sudden catch waves they paddle for every set and drop in do whatever and really dont have a clue, these guys there are more and more everyday and are really giving stand ups a bad name if this is you please relax and chill out and do your time in the ocean like everyone else had to. Otherwise its all gunna turn to ****!

Pretty funny i think. Just as it makes corporate sense to market products to people who love SUPing so too does it make sense to market to the even bigger segment of people who hate them or at least find that sort of cartoon funny.

Agree with DTM. Can't say I've seen too much of it Melbourne (kooks paddling for everything that looks like a wave in a crowded lineup), but I did see exactly what DTM was talking about on a recent trip to Sydney.

I think maybe, people here in Melbourne tend to be a little friendlier and respectful than our Sydney cousins.

The advert is just an ad, and if they make one like CMC said with a SUPer carrying a machine gun, well it's all just fun.

Hey Lobes, groms love Julian Wilson because he rips mate and also has known to ride pink board for breast cancer awareness ( yeh I hate it when my son mentions his name )

The surf industry has every surfer stoked on surfing and nothing else.

Welcome to the surf culture Lobes, its been going on for years and will not change.
Best you take up rowing or something like that, yes I am piss-d with your comments re-surfers are idiots ffs and your stupid mate mindless zombies.

With uneducated wankers like you no wonder sup riders cop a bad rap.

yes I ride both, but its very easy to see who is a newie in the ocean.

as one forum user would say CHEERS.

Lobes was just describing the culture and says he chooses to paddle away from that crap, and will boycott the brand - so what, that's his choice.

Probably stupids post you are more angry about.

OK maybe so Oliver, but both Lobes and Stupid made some insulting remarks.
Sorry Lobes I would normally agree with your posts but using the words idiots and surfers in the same sentence will p-ss me off any-day

Hey this is great reading guys, nothing like a little forum fight for entertainment. As someone who has ridden short, long and basicly everything else that floats since the early 70s I think there will always be a certain amount of gang mentality involved(birds of a fether)syndrome. But most people are smart enough to make up their own minds about what ever issues that confront them.I feel that if you are a good ambassador for your sport then people will take more notice of that than a silly add in a mag.

Ok bit of a sweeping generalization by me. Not all surfers are idiots as many posters on this forum regularly prove. But I'm just a peaceful guy and I really dislike conflict so these crazy scenes where people abuse each other in the line up and don't share the stoke really colour my perception of surf culture. I don't come from a place where's there's much of a surfing community so I get really intimidated when I travel to popular spots and this sort of stuff occurs. Now there's a company trying to stir up sh!t and encouraging short boarders to land fins first on my head. That's completely out of line in my opinion.

Those people who say "oh its just a joke" or "smart advertising" should Take a look at the news from Arizona today. A congresswoman was shot In the head and a lot of people are saying it was at least partly inspired by an ad from Sarah palin showing the congresswoman in question targeted by a gun crosshairs. There is always an idiot out there will take this stuff a little more seriously then others.
