Records were set and a few comments from paddlers saying it was epic conditions out there. Was this the best race yet?? Awesome coverage from Chris at supracer! We need to buy him a bigger server though

Looked like the wind was more from behind than previous years...look forward to getting some more info - top guys are paddling at blistering pace, especially considering the last 8 miles are so tricky. Connors ave speed is 12.5km/h - thats way decent on any 10km downwind let alone 53km semi side-winder - epic!

The first hour was ugly with a lot of North in the wind and swell then conditions went very good for the Ka'iwi Channel with east winds and a ENE swell we were surfing and gliding all the way. Like catching bumps to the north then surfing South we took a very good line our boat crew where very good and onto it. The scariest part is after the change over is when your floundering around in the ocean waiting for the support boat to pick you up, remember the Ka'iwi Channel is a caf'e for tiger sharks. It got really hard about 5 miles out from China walls the ocean went very sloppy your board felt like it was sticking. The closer you got to China Walls say 20ft from the cliffs the current would just suck you along with ease.
I truly think 3 man teams is harder than going solo but thats a full page essay of a story. "story coming soon I'll write it when I get back home" But a 3 man team is THE BEST FUN you will ever have when racing in the M2O thats for shore. Can't wait for next years M2O already.

Keen to see some vid of the glides from your support boat view etc

2014 M2O TRUE Sharkie FACTS:- A great Aussie prone paddleboarder had a big shark swim infront of him about 3/4 into the race, then shortly after another prone paddleboarder got his board bitten by a big shark, that person quickly pulled out, can’t blame him either. “WTF Help Me Please Mr Wizard”
A few years ago a paddleboarder was filming his M2O run with a GoPro during the team change over, he decided to take the GoPro of the board. The GoPro was still recording in the water while waiting for the support boat to pick him up, later that week while editing the GoPro footage he noticed a VERY BIG Tiger shark swimming underneath him “like WTF”

TRIVIA FACTS:- every month there is a fatal shark attack in Hawaiian waters.

Phil well done on the M2O, looks like a fantastic event and I would love to do it myself

Just a point of clarification:
TRIVIA FACTS:- every month there is a fatal shark attack in Hawaiian waters.

sharkattackfile.info

2012 = 1 fatal in USA in California 0 in Hawaii

2000-2009 = 6 in Hawaii

sharkattackfile.info/shark_attack_country_totals/USA_shark_attacks/2000 2009_shark_attack_figures_for_USA/shark_attacks_usa_stat_totals_location_during_2000-2009.asp

1990-1999 = 10 in Hawaii

1980-1989 = 9 in Hawaii

Averaging about 1 a year which is no more than Australia's long term average (not in the last few years though) but please don't change this into another boring shark thread.

My friends saw some big ones on Maliko the other day while paddling

National Geographic says 2 shark fatals in 2013 in all of Hawaii and none from 2004 - 2012.

http://news.nationalgeographic.com.au/news/2013/12/131203-science-shark-attack-hawaii-maui-fisherman-surfer-tiger-australia-bite-ocean/

"Two shark attack fatalities this year are Hawaii's first since 2004."

However there was a spike in the number of shark attacks in Hawaii.

"The attack was the eighth near Maui and the thirteenth in Hawaiian waters this year—more than triple the 20-year average of about four unprovoked shark incidents each year."

I'm only going on what my close friends on Maui tell me that paddle Mailko everyday and are a very reliable source. There hasn't been a shark attack on Oahu for a long time.
