Maybe an inferiority complex "an unrealistic feeling of general inadequacy caused by actual or supposed inferiority in one sphere, sometimes marked by aggressive behaviour in compensation" and that's why there always taking a peak at the SUP forum

There's a thread over on the SUP forum that may interest a few here.

It's easy to see why when SUP is clearly superior.

"Kai Lenny laughs when I ask him about this debate. "I've had this conversation with a lot people," he says. Lenny looks at it like this: prone surfers don't realize how effective of a tool a SUP can be. Like Hamilton, Lenny is a genuine waterman. He excels at surfing and at SUP, and has won championships for his SUP surfing and long-distance SUP races, too. To watch him surf Jaws is a masterclass in riding big waves-regardless of board type."When you're already standing up, you can take off on waves much later, you can really stall and put yourself in more critical positions," he says. "When it's windy and surfers get spray in their face, you're above all that. When you have a paddle in your hand, it acts like a crutch. If you hit chop and you're going to fall, you can put the paddle in the water and catch yourself. And you can give yourself one more stroke to catch the wave or use it to pivot the board around the paddle."Lenny says being up high also lets him see waves materialising further out, allowing him to get into position earlier. "When people see me paddle toward the horizon, they immediately start following now," he says.

That should set the cat amongst the pigeons

clutch in-out and which gear, up or down?

In WA at the moment there are a few threads running on FB about the same issue and I could feel the tension on the water last night. It's a shame people use the word "HATE" so openly within a public arena, I HATE terrorists not other water users, I class other water users as friends, yes all of them. Anyways I surf, sup, kite even used to windsurf years ago so see all angles of the argument. Too be honest water sports are getting more popular with more people on the water, fact, we can't change that and won't be able to influence the future. If I SUP I get dropped in by longboarders, shortboarders, other SUP's. If I surf I get dropped in by longboarders, shortboarders, other SUP's see where this is going. I don't shout and scream like a four year old retard. If the rider is reckless and endangering other water users I will have a quiet word, often they don't even realise what they have done and are quite apologetic, sometimes they ignore me ! Things will get worse and with the introduction of foil surfboards and SUP's to the line-up I guess there will be a new target to "HATE". These boys will be picking up waves far outside and have priority, I am sure you won't want to drop in on one of those floating guillotines.

Ah Rossall nicely put mate
Should be equal on the water
Today Im surfing In Bali sitting out the back with 4 or 5 short boarders , we are all sharing the waves
Funny thing is they are bagging out all the other short boarders and longboarders sitting on the inside
I just had a laugh to myself and thought at least Im not the enemy today
Life is good , share to stoke and smile once in a while

One point that's been mentioned a few times - please don't act as a spotter. Most of the more experienced surfing crew have spent years perfecting the art of reading the water and it gives an advantage in a crowded lineup. If someone's calling approaching waves it suddenly levels out the field and that advantage is lost. It's also super condescending. I'm sure beginners appreciate it though.

I can see your point of view Legion. Experience can't always out do a much better view point of what's coming though.
I personally can say that have on several occasions spotted sets for surfers and saved them getting cleaned up or helped them score some of the best waves of the day. Made me feel good about getting plenty of good ones myself when someone thanks you for spotting and has a smile as big as mine. Rookie or experienced not the issue. Stoke is.

Happy days.

Haven't felt any hatred towards sups lately.....surely its about being friendly and polite to other surfers. But you can avoid crowds here if you want.......maybe not where you guys are

Different story if it's 10' and you're saving me getting cleaned up. Or if there are more waves than surfers. Then calling is OK. But in a hungry crowd where tactics come into play experience is golden and a couple of metres head start is all you need. When someone calls and the whole pack paddles en masse, well that sucks.

Unfortunately my comments reflect that I surf in hungry crowds more often than the former two situations.

I'm sure the more experienced know the situations I mean, and how you can use it to your advantage. Even feinting moves to redirect the pack where you want them to go, and so on. Or engaging in conversation to distract or psych out people, etc.

In 44years of surfing I've never seen a prone surfer squeal Yeeeeeew then paddle like hell out the back or whistel and point out the back to a mate
Saying reading surf is a art is rubbish, if any newbe surfer can't read and spot swell after a couple of years they probably went to special school with me.

All through the 70's it was common at every break I surfed at. Bells, Point Leo, Woolamai. Everywhere.

I guess in those days surfing was a friendlier sport and much less crowded than it became in the late 80s and 90s. Everybody wanted everybody else to have as much fun as possible.

Well that's just the plain truth folks. A pack of hungry wolves don't want more wolves turning up to a feast and they certainly don't want a grizzly bear sticking its snout in for a feed.

Had a great surf at Yal's a few weeks ago calling in SUP's & other peeps to share the wave with me coz it was small for that spot. Had this one wave where something burst out of the wave beside me. I thought it was the SUP guys board springing out, but it was a dolphin about 2 foot away from me at head height bursting out of a head n 1/2 wave...special moment

Did the dolphin cop some abuse for dropping in and not showing respect for prone surfers? Maybe the dolphin will make some comments in this thread and be a good waterman and offer up a humble apology?

that dolphin shd move to a peak that the proners dont like

How about everyone check out one of the surf cams on the weekend and then ask yourself can I expect to go out and have fun.
This is irrelevant on what craft you decide to surf.
Im sure maybe a beginner or the odd weekend warrior might have fun but for 90 percent of us.
Youd have more fun doing something else
Thats just reality in most places these days

you just cant trust a dolphin these days. Even they have turned to the dark side next thing you know sharks will just do whatever they want with total disregard for all types of water craft. We will have to start a new topic "Sharks and Dolphins hatred of shortboarder's, longboarder's, SUPers etc- views"

It always amazes me how apparently sane men completely lose their ** over a second rate wave and want to fight for ownership. Likewise I am also saddened by the fact that something as beautiful and natural as surfing has to be poisoned by the worst traits of human beings. Does surfing bring out the best or worst in us? All the tribal, earn respect crap is just like religion. A human construct designed to enable people to gain exclusive control over others. I always thought surfing was about freedom, joy and self expression. Not being forced to subscribe to some surfers religious rules. The only basis for the regulation of sups is safety.
