Great race today with some fun glides in the ocean followed by the flatwater slog, but with a high tide, not too much water moving and enough shelter from the wind, it was pretty good as far as flatwater paddling can be. Tough battle between the girls the whole way.

Congratulations to Beau on a great win!

Only suggestion I could offer Surfing QLD to improve would be recognition of all place getters in each division (rather than just first) and for the State Qualification divisions, it would have been nice to see them announce/recognise all paddlers who've made the team.

Looking forward to the Bop tomorrow.

Great suggestion Ali.

Prizes and money are nice for the winners but organizers need to remember that the human element of racing without the inclination or time or even physical attributes to train daily and b at the pointy end need reasons to keep showing up.

I would never criticise anyone with the ability or motivation to run an event, it's hard work but if there was anything that could be done for participants in general to take away with them more people would be part of events. I don't know what that is yet but I'd love to hear suggestions. Other sports do it well to attract people that will never win, what do they do?

you've got cmc, somehow everyone needs to feel like part of the family.

one thing i've noticed is nobody cheers on the other paddlers behind them as they come in. everyone seems to walk off doing there own thing. i'm guilty too. maybe that's something to look at!!!

Is the long distance race at the Nationals 14ft and the technical race 12'6?
Well done to Jacko and Dylon on doing it on 12'6's but why? Clearly they are good enough paddlers to do it on 12'6 but you would have to be pretty confident that you were going to beat a few 14s to make the team.

I like the idea of trophy's for the place getters and some random draws for everyone who entered. They do that at Merimbula where every person wins something. That's one of the reasons they still get 200 competitors and it's been running for over 30 years.

Re: Jacko on the 12-6 he did amazingly well he was just behind the pack of 2nd 3rd & 4th overall.

The two boys didnt have access to 14 footers, so it was a case of bite the bullett and quilify anyway.
Sue Dorries was the same in the women, 5th overall on a 12'6.

So Jacko being an international team rider and dealer for the brand couldnt get a 14?

You are right I did not have a 14ft board and the one I did get on the day I gave to Ang as this event was more about getting to the Aussies so I wanted to help as many people as I could make the team!! I also gave my ocean 14 to Molly so she had a better chance as she did nit have a 14 either and if I had had another one I would have given it to sue Dorries I rode a 12'6 and felt I could make the team on it as the 12'6 rocks!!! So fir me to take the 14 would be more selfish than anything else!! Just because you are sponsored or own a shop does not mean you have heaps if boards and having a 14ft class in this event caught a few people of gard.

Thanks mate, I think what some people forget is winning these comps is great but there is a bigger picture and that is making a team for Australia and part of being a good team is sometimes you have to make sacrificaes to get the strongest team and if there is one thing I learnt from going to the ISA games and hanging out with the Aussie is that the team comes before anything else!!!

Not having a go more power to you if you can qualify on a 12'6 competing againts 14, its a big effort, was just curious as to why you didn't paddle 14s.

I know shop owners/ sponsored riders don't have unlimited boards at their disposal and good on you for supporting others by giving your two 14s to others.

Forgot Troy turned 40 last week, sitting there urging him on all race, telling him when waves are coming, Shoulda bloody ran him over and tripped him up.

Thats the problem when you've been coaching a bloke since he was 16....

Mmm thats right Ali, Dylan finished after us.
poor little fella was tuckered out and freezing cold,
Didn't help that Jacko took him out after he had a nice lead during the first lap, letting beau get away and establish a nice lead.
