Good concept but I think that it has the potential to be very problematic. It is an accepted fact that at some point in a session you will find yourself getting cleaned up on a wave and then find yourself
tumbling in the washing machine. The last thing that I would want to be holding onto is a board which potentially could come into contact with any part of your person during this phase.

Yes but you still have your leg rope so you would just ditch as you normally do - problem solved. I am pretty sure he is not holding on to his board when its triple over head anyway -and if he is - good luck to him

I don't go out in triple overhead. I'm that that good.
The same thing seems to happen every time. After your trashed the board is pointing in to the beach, you pull it in and grab the handle, board still into the beach. White water goes over you and then the board. Board with its floatation comes straight to the surface after wash has gone over you pulling you to the surface, still behind your board, but yes there's always the possibility for disaster.

Congrats Broadman I reckon your onto it and especially when busy! As you already stated there are probably other solutions to retain your SUP missile! Another cheaper option I use is to keep the section of Ankle Velcro off a broken leggy and feed it through either the lashing or loop of your new leggy, allowing enough room to fit your hand through in a hurry... just in-case! I found waiting till last moment and submerging yourself works well in up-to 6' approx? Then I tried it in 8-10 Ulu's and snapped two fins with my left shin, I didn't realize at the time but I also tore the vertical and horizontal meniscus and opened my shin up nicely!!! An important note, I'm riding an 8'0 x 29" x 110 liter board and weigh 93-94kgs. However, I would be reluctant to try this with say a 10' + 140 liter + board in anything over head high?

I had reservations about these ideas from my own experiences in grabbing rail savers in largish surf.

After seeing this on the Stretch Paddlepop thread I won't be going near any of these ideas.

Cheers Darren. Been waiting for this post. Cut short, is that a pun? Anyways i was about to push D off his stretch minion and have a go, because he was having WAY more fun than me, when i got caught up in the leash as my laird went over the falls and pulled the top of my ring finger off. Yep, it can happen and really quickly too.
Thanks for sorting me out D. I'm sure a big fat bream is enjoying the top of my finger somewhere. Either that or someone found it and they're still looking for the rest of the body.
Whatever happens, there's enough left to grasp a paddle and I'll be back out there in a couple of weeks.
Here's a pic for you champ!

That has got to hurt...

I may not hold on to my leg rope as much anymore...

Since I reposted that photo I have been told about a guy on a SUP who lost 2 fingers at Southport SA grabbing his legrooe and a long boarder who lost a finger at Pondi grabbing his.

Hurt heaps more after they had to nibble a bit more bone off and scrubbed it out! I was trying so hard to save my board from getting damaged, i forgot about taking care of myself. Never again.

Ouch. I must say there have been times when the leg rope gets a bit tangled as the board gets yanked away and you feel lucky afterwards - I guess I can now see just how lucky...

My solution. Not for big surf but neither am I. Webbing protects rail. the board can twist without wrenching your arm. Its not perfect but I have been using for over a year and has worked pretty well.

Its a carry handle off a kayak attached to the second leggy plug and wrapped in the webbing of the handle of a sports bag. Most important is to ensure the the chord is long enough so as not to crush knuckles.
