Interesting Clifton...hadn't thought about the soaking up the resin bit. Are you glassing your paddles?
If you use the drawknife Fatsurf just be careful with it. It can take a big chunk of material off real quick.
Go easy with the draw knife if you get one fatsurf, they will remove a serious amount of wood very quickly if you haven't used one before. What glue did you use there ?
If you do end up using it, just make sure you give it a good coat of epoxy all over cause the PVA will break down in water if exposed.

Malama uses DAP two part resorcinol glue. I haven't tried it yet. Still have some epoxy to use up 1st.http://www.dap.com/product_details.aspx?BrandID=64&SubcatID=10
I do use my drawknife. But I do it mostly for sentimental reasons...was my Dads and Granddads. Just have to be careful. Final shaping is still done by sanding. Probably better just to get an angle grinder and use some heavy grit. It's what most folks do.
yes my paddles are glassed all over , i use a water proof pva good strength and gap filling and no mixing there are plenty on the market any good joinery suppies place will have a few to chose from.
now its time for hand sanding mmmm time time time

Looks great.. Just wondering why you made the blade round like that.. and also the fat T grip handle..
That must be hard to fit you thumb under?.. Maybe I'm just too used to the skinny Kialoa T grip handle..
DJ
I'm not picking..
It may even work better than the typical flat base blades because it will enter the water softer. The new Naish paddles seem more rounded.
I'd leave it and see how it goes.. Maybe cut a V into it like what Naish have done..

How long is the blade fatsurf? 8inch?
I'd love a timber hanger paddle!So once
you knock out a couple,I'll place an order
If not Piros might sell me one,btw his paddles
are working pieces of ART!
I've been sitting ,watching and enjoying this threat with interest!
