Hey all,
Has anyone tried these fins and what did you think
Have a new stick on the way ( not saying what as I don't to jinx it ) but I will say I am on the hunt for a good fin.
I really like the shape and rake of the A4 Greenough Dolphin and am looking for one in a 8" or 8.5"
I have looked online but can't seem to find any in OZ.
I tried to buy on surfstitch but they have run out, and because it is part of there california collection, they may not get any more in Australia for some time.

I might settle for a Shapers Dolphin in the same size, but they are out of these sizes also.

Great fin. Alkali George is pretty much the same and Aussie made.

I've been using this Alkali in my 7'10" and totally frigin' love it. Really nice drawn out turns but whipy coming off the bottom. Thinking about a deeper one for my 9'5" McT involvement.

Below is is what Pco is Talking about through Alkali, pretty sure this is their grenough. Can get them Volane or coloured.

True Ames make good fins, been around for a long time. I Think Simondo may have a few..

Lots of places do a knock off of the Greenough

Locally maybe try, Soar fins, Vouch, Alkali.

Or try MC surf in Byron.. Off the top of my head the all do a version.

I have bought 2 Greenough's from the States. Quick shipping and easy to deal with.

I think I paid $20 odd for shipping (that's a rough guestimate from my bad memory)

Locky 24; Contact true ames direct via their website. Mate and I got two fins over here last year(yeah our dollar was a bit better then) cheaper than here in Oz.

I have a TA fin and its definitely well made...

That said i'd say the Alkali (have 3) and the Glide fins (have 1) are the best made fins I've used, hand made an beautiful. And they are local small scale aussie businesses that offer a much better level of service...

Good thread Locky. And big thanks to Leashless for the tip. I tried a few sites and hit a few snags. Then I went to Mitch's... Order confirmed on Feb 19th and this arrived in the mail today. Whoot!

Hi McHenry, Yes it was on ebay forever (terrible pics but a nice board). Then he (nice bloke) dropped his price and put it on Gumtree. And it's in my local area, so I swooped. It's in near new nick. I just put the new Greenough 9.75 fin in and there's still foam dust in the box.

Hard edges down the back mate?

Hi Mac, Yes - well spotted. It was actually part of what clinched the deal, a nice hard edged through the back. I note in the pics of your beautiful new board that you had asked for an edge there. And yes, happy with the fin. I actually also rang the McT boys (great bunch to deal with on the phone) and enquired about the Redline fins cos I like the look of them so much (bit of Greenough influence in the template I think) .. They said they weren't doing them anymore, but that the other template was very similar.

FCS fins for fin boxes are very good too.

But they just really copied True Ames.

McTavish fins are excellent too.

One the key ingredients you want is a nice "sharpish" leading edge... Assuming you want to run fast down the points, and down the line... (a blunt old leading edge is fine for nose riders...)...

What's the rule of thumb again?

For Single Fins: At least 1 inch per foot of board. Add a 1/2" inch for a larger body/frame/surfer.
For a 9'6 Longboard Single Fin, think 9.5 inch to 10 inch fin. Even 10.5 inch if you are 100kg+.

Single fins are fun! :)

True Ames off the best complete range that you could want!
Place an order for a few fins, save on past. You wont regret it... !!

Or even order 4-8 fins between a few of you...

Greenough 4A is pretty much exactly what Wizz does for the McTavish Trackers...

Great looking board.

Have you thought about getting one of Farrelllys fins?

I'm surprised that board is in such good nick, because Farrelly are very close to where I live and I tend to see a few of them around, the one thing I notice about them is that once you see someone on one, it's very rare to ever see them on any other board again, even years later.

He has 2 basic templates, the most popular is the square tail in the pic and the pin tail, you never seem to see much else.

You can go down to Surfblanks and get a fully machined blank in either of those shapes, ready to finish off and glass for less that 300 bucks. I was very tempted to do it recently but I doubted that they would have been prepared to machine one to my required thickness.

Perhaps I am a shallow person, because I love the look of the Greenough fins and don't like the look of the Cutaways.
I am sure the great Midget rips with them, but I have only tried one Cutaway and I didn't like it (then again, it may be me or the waves i choose to ride -- mainly beachbreaks). The one i tried was on a mate's board and it felt like it tracked quite a lot (it could have been the board or the pilot too I guess).
If i change my mind I see they are a good price: www.farrellysurfboards.com/12-farrelly-cutaway/item/12-cutaway
And yes, the great Bernard Farrelly probably knows better than I do.

Thanks guys.

Hey Obct, the gent i bought if from thought he wanted to get back in to surfing, but changed his mind. If I was ordering from Farrelly i may have opted for something else, but the Gumtree price was too good to resist and it's very close to what I was after. It feels like it's glassed to last. The website says don't be surprised if Surfblanks Australia answer your call. And there's also a bit where they talk about being prepared to match litres to kgs with their longboards. It might be worth a chat just in case they can to something you like.
(PS... Sorry about the thread hijack.)

We talk so little about LB design here, I don't think too many are concerned about a hijack if it relates to any aspect of design.

I'm sure Surfblanks can match weight to board volume, but the basic problem is, they can't match board volume to ability, and that's my problem, just getting onto a wave and standing up, after that, I can manage okay.

I knew that if I wanted to go sub 10', I needed to be 24" wide, and at least 3 3/4" thick. I may get close to that with their 10'4" blank, but then the rocker would be ruined once I cut almost 12" off the length. That meant my only option was the 9'8" blank, and as you can see, I could almost get the width out of it but never the thickness out of it, so that was out of the question.

So in the end I found what I wanted somewhere else and did it all myself. I ended up with 24" wide by 4" thick and 9'6" long.

It's hard to carry, badly shaped, badly glassed, and poorly finished, but it catches waves easily, has an acceptable turn of speed and is far easier to flick around than any board I've ever had, so I'm happy.

But I still would have preferred if I could have found someone else to do it properly.

Maybe next time.

Show us some pics of the finished product Obct - I think you might be selling yourself a bit short in regard to the shape/finish etc.

Making a board is bloody hard work, so to get something that you are happy with the feel of the ride is unreal. And a cracker of an effort....

At the end of the day, the performance of the board is what it is really judged on - Not the artwork, hey Mac

Oh and in regard to the width - could you not custom glue up a thicker stringer (even chamber this ala Gene Cooper) and use this to expand on the width?

From a distance, the bottom does not look too bad because the single layer of glass was manageable for me.

However, I still managed to F up the Volan fin patch by not making sure I cut within the line I made with the sharpie pen and then laying that side face down so I could not see my mistake until I was laminating.

Here you can see the tail vee, but you can also see the bubbles on the top side where I did not manage to do my laps in time.

If there's ever a next time, I'll be using UV.

This pic mostly shows the foil on the tail, but you can also see where the slight double concave is designed to spill out at the rear of the board
