the sandpits( or traps ) are negotiable in any car with a little bit of clearance ....although you can only drive at 10-20km/h for most of the track
there is one monster pothole on one side of one of the multiple water holes(traps) where someone has gotten stuck and dug themselves an all mighty hole..
unless you have to go into port to get supplies it is still quicker to stay on the highway and come in from the crescent end.Maria river rd is not a good option.....beach is low tide only unless you are gelignite jack murray !!
benefit is you can pretty well surf in just about any wind if there is swell.

The cabins at the back of the camping ground are very/nice convenient and not too expensive in off season if you can fill them at plommer ....last time i checked it was $170 a night for the 3 bedroom 8 person cabin

There's been plenty of fish down here as well. I've been getting a few flathead on soft plastics around the sand flats and in the local lake. There's been a lot of surface fish outside as well like bonito, frigates, salmon and tailor. The blackfish have started off the rocks as well. Best time of the year for fishing now. The only problem is sharks but haven't heard of many sightings lately.

Boofy feedback on you're surf at Byron waves look fun,i plan on going monday for a surf.

Boofy I am in - will get final clearance from the GF this evening. My biggest danger is that she will want to come as well. She loves it up there - we go there 2 or 3 times a year and have not been since late Feb and we normally go in early June for her birthday. Hope she is rostered on that w/e.

The road in can be a bit hit or miss - in late Feb it had just been graded and was like a nice sealed road. The time before I hardly got out of second gear! Its just the way it is. If you are coming form the South do not bother with the ferry at Port Mac and then the beach / 4wd track. Sometimes (as has been previously stated) it can be absolutely terrible. Its fun to attack it from PP if the waves are crap for an arvo session.

As for surf options as long as there is swell there are lots of spots. PP itself is a lovely long right hand point break - best from knee to 1.5 times overhead (max - as too much water moves down the point and it tends to break away too far from the good sand) and at low tide. Although swells with more east in them are more forgiving. Very long rides. The back beaches can be fun in the right conditions but Queens is an absolutely quality setup and wave - protected from the NE winds like Treach.

Fishing wise - you will clean up. There are some lovely rocks outcrops you can cast into off the back beach which provide plenty of tucker for those who like a seafood feast. Jew fish are also known to frequent the area. Lots of beach worms as well.

Facilities - there are cold showers and clean toilets and a big shelter to hide from the sun or rain that overlooks the point. Crescent is 20 mins into town for any supplies you may have forgotten - you can buy ice at the camp ground. We just cook on the open fire or gas. Lots of places nearby you can get wood from. If you like pies then I would suggest you stop in at the bakery in Crescent and get yourself a Mex (my fav) or any other flavour that excites you - they are the best in Aust I reckon. Especially for break when you are hungover. I would also suggest that you tuck into their vanilla slice - be warned that one always sells out before lunchtime.

In June last year I surfed with my neighbour and a mate alone most of the 5 days we were there. W/e's are a touch busier - but for you Queenslanders it will probably seem like there is no one out at all
