Yep, I was on a very busy motorcycle forum, but I'd rather not do it here because,
A) if the feckers who stir up the personal assaults simply had a good long look at themselves and shut the feckk up we'd all be a lot happier.
B) If those who were offended by whatever is said, we're able to let it go, realizing the offenders are only flexing cyber muscles, they would be be a lot happier.
B) you wouldn't like it if I was mod, I'd have the suspension trigger running hot.
C) We are "supposed" to be grown mature men, adults, who woul dprobably spank our children for behaving the way some of us do in here.

Just because it is a free forum (thanks to Laurie) doesn't give ANYONE the right to slag off at anyone else about their preference for surfing equipment, sexual leanings, where they live or what kind of bike shorts they wear. For pity's sake, if you met one another in a pub, you would either ignore each other or have a beer together, but because you can be anonymous (to a point) on an Internet forum, you can get tough behind your keyboard. Thing is, the tougher you seem to be behind your keyboard, the weaker you come across to anyone else.

So, for mine, I'd rather see self regulation and if you have an urged to start a troll, take a breath, have a beer and think about how you would feel if you were on the receiving end.

It's not a good example to our next generation now is it..............

Great campaign speech Michael, you've got the job...

But you are right, the basic rule should be just act like a decent human.

Maybe everyone just needs to get stoked on surfing and ignore the clowns that will always be out there , moderator or not. Case in point that a chill pill is needed; 4 replies to my single fin pimp (link below) and 38 replies about a moderator / controlling a dog that's a s@$t stirrer.

its a retro 7 foot single, I think that classifies as a longboard forum shooter.all the shortboard forum wants to talk about are their JS's, Burtons and Firewires.

MichaelR has hit the nail on the head.

My mistake by saying "moderator" .. it's probably the wrong term. "Host" might be better term.

For me, it all comes back to the "pub" scenario. I'm sure we've all been in the pub having a great time when a "special" person comes along and ruins what was a good get together. Soon the conversation is not about surfing, but petty swipes at each other ... so & so is a such and such .. so & so should go and ... all witnessed here recently.

A host is somebody who can see others starting to disagree more than just on opinion .. to get to it before strong words are said and hate takes seed!

If some crew could muster the courage to drop the grudge, look for the common interest, .. be the first to give some ground .. soon everybody is getting along fine...

If you guys can sort your own poop out, learn to get along, on your own, without deletions & suspension how good would that be?

Generally yes - apart from the obvious interactions between certain individuals. No point hiding it, and no point naming names for the same reason.

But that's the beauty of a "host" from within the (sub) community - they are in a much better place to know what's out of line.

When I review some of the reports here the post in itself might not be to bad, but it comes with a stack of history that I don't necessary have visibility (or the desire to spend hours researching). Someone who's a regular in the community will know in a heartbeat what's right and wrong, and can take swift action.

Besides, there's a free set of seabreeze sunnies in it...

Not even close. The best self-moderated forums are those where there are heaps of users, a super tight bunch of regulars and any trolls are shot down in flames by the regulars without any intervention required. Seabreeze is just too small. E.g. there's one forum I occasionally visit with regularly 15,000+ users online at once and it almost never requires a mod (of which there are only a few anyway). Or slashdot, with it's meta-moderation scheme.

On somewhat of a tangent, but I have been trying to convince Laurie we should do that for ages...

Here's an example of how it works in a "randomly selected" topic:

tech.slashdot.org/story/12/05/22/2039246/depressed-people-surf-the-web-differently

Note unless your post gets a high score it is compressed - it helps keep the signal high and the noise low (unless you really want to see it)
