Those stretch bands remind me of the chest expander i had as a kid,was really into it until one of the the springs nearly ripped my nipple off, and I thought nipple rash from my coolite was painful.

Google injury recovery exercises. Helps to isolate all the muscle groups without damaging joints. Taylor the exercises to suit. Bit of yoga to spice it up. Bike riding for cardio and cross training. I'm no expert just trying new ways to keep fit without putting to much pressure on bod seems to work okay.

Good work,ok what if you have an injury like Vanders has with shoulder issues,would you then train that injury?


Don't get injured cause I'm fit . Shoulders problems & I'm on the 666 for couple of days still surfing .

Just coming back after a the ankle Op...back on a quite heavy weights program for the legs to try and re-build strength plus a lot of body weight/trx stuff for the upperbody and core...also try and swim about a 1km after the weights session followed by a nice sauna and a go in the plunge pool...do this 3 times a week and then yoga DVD with the kids every night and just surf or go fro a walk the other 4 days....still a fat **** but at least my surf fitness has come back pretty quick

How's the ankle? Flexibility and pain?

Flexibilty is still not so flash...minimal pain while surfing...generally a bit sore at the end of the day but mostly around where they did the athroscope...still haven't hit the lip but cutties and snaps have been OK so far...I also bailed on a few late drops that I would usually gobble up

I think the bottom line is that if you want to surf to a satisfactory level when you're edging up and over 40 then you have to work harder.

Yeah, I'm a few years from that and the last 12 months my shoulders have gone bad. Cardio is farked..

Have just started to get on top of it so if anyone has good shoulde exercises please post them up? For cardio I have just been hitting the bike.

I currently have a dodgy shoulder that is getting scanned next week and I haven't been able to do some of the kettlebell stuff for a while now because of it.


Kettlebells are the shiz! I discovered them about 2 years ago and now I do kettlebell workout + stretching most weekdays and surf as much as possible.

best cardio advice i give blokes is get of the smokes.

a mate of mine only smokes to keep the weight off… thats the saddest thing i know.

Well said smh,you can't just paddle out and go bananas without other forms of training.


For me most things were easy at 38 . Now at 43 i really find its a daily struggle to build up strength and fitness.

My advice is to start young and maintain..

haha give it another 10 years mate thats where I'm at,I love going to the gym,been at it a little over 2 years now,I think it adds some power to your surfing.

off track i know.
drove into this working mine town the other day it was a bit cool and noticed lots of blokes working around in singlets.

all these boys were pumped up one guy of small stature was huge ,you dont build body mass like that without juice.

i run into a personal trainer mate who works with miners and states some of the lads are full of roids.

its sad that culture has crept into their lives.

i worked with a body builder "fark he was big"who did comps he hit the juice and was waiting for it to clear his body ..two years it would take he said that was in 96.

had zits all over his back, a couple of lads saw him shaping in front of mirrors in dick pokers at the gym, they said he had no nuts WTF

Yep. Move more, eat less of the right stuff. It ain't hard - except many people seem to find it hard.

I have a mate with diabetes who needs a personal trainer to keep fit and a doctor monitoring his diet because he has no self control and needs that external motivator. I guess at least he cares enough to go to them.

I try get my home brew beer close to James Squire Fifty Lashes. I reckon the last batch will be even better with a last minute adjustment to the hops. I make sure I drink a few pints of it after a glass of red wine on a daily basis...oh & surf pretty often

Where to start.... You must do rotator cuff exercises- especially external rotators (with band). These help align shoulders. Don't stretch rotator cuff- they are small/weak muscles often already stretched. You must stretch pecs- especially if you work at a desk. Also calves, hammies and hip flexors. Do lots of pulling knee to chest/opposite shoulder, especially if stiff through hips- helps with pop up. Use a foam roller under thoracic spine, once again desk work is the culprit here. Lift weights- mainly exercises that not only use a lot of muscles, but create functional strength. Squats, pull ups, bent over rowing, bench press (but stretch those pecs...). Drink heaps of water. Stay off foods that inflame (sugar). If you need surgery- get it done by the best orthos you can find. As you get older, you get bone spurs/ deposits that can fray rotator cuff tendons under the acromion. The AC joint can become arthritic due to overhead nature of paddling. They grind off the last (in my case 15mm) of collar bone. Works well if you are meticulous about rehab including rotator cuff exercises. Ride big, buoyant boards that allow you to catch waves easily and keep you high up out of the water when you paddle. If you really want to hang on to your youth and ride shorties go for volume, flat rocker and adequate width (shameless plug for Geoff McCoy's boards!) . Avoid 'lizard paddling'- paddling with chin close to deck- work on thoracic spine flexibility. Look at the groms- they get an almost 90 degree bend from thoracic spine through the neck- even on a shortboard they have shoulders lifted up high as they paddle. Keep your surf sessions sensible. Do laps in the pool. Practice swimming/kicking with flippers without breathing- you'll thank yourself next long hold down. Know your limitations as to wave size, ride 'em big enough to thrill but not scare. If you are an elder statesman (or woman) act like it. Support groms/women/learners/strugglers in the water. Stand up to those who don't. Give waves away; keep egos in check. Smile and say g'day to other surfers. To quote Gerry Lopez- 'surf today like you are going to surf tomorrow, not like there is no tomorrow' (or something similar). Another quote worth mentioning, from baseball- 'that arm only has so many throws'. I'm no doctor, so don't take any of this as gospel, but all this has worked for me. 54 and as stoked as I was at 16.

That line about lizard paddling. I've never heard that before but i have been looking at my paddling style and i do that. I have been watching compared to many of the pros (not because I'm like one, but thats what you see paddling) and some have a high arched back like KS and others do tend to have a very flat back still. I have started to talk about building up my lower back muscles to be able to flex more. I do still ride short boards so probably would benefit from more volume, but i like riding short boards.
Some one else told me it is related to if you have your legs up when paddling, anyone have any info on this style and ways to help fix it, or is it just flexibility, or can it be years of bad habit

Paragraphs with headings is good to.
It's like doing 4 smaller sets with a break in between instead of one big set.
