Back to the Webber, if you look at his latest designs you will see Greg is making even deeper single to double concave. And even deck concave.
I like the concept of this design and was wondering if others are seeing anything similar to this happening as a trend or design uptake from other shapers.
Not a mid length but a sup in this link but it shows a very nice bottom design that is almost identical to what I have drawn and flow modeled, and yes flow modeling for all types of surf conditions is near on impossible.
But this design apart from how pronounced the vee is looks amazing to me, and is likely what I would ask a shaper to condense into a 6'8, 44L mid length for me along with what Greg describes in his video. But with an outline similar to the Fitz Cosmic Twin or a big fish, I just love that shape.
Unfortunately the Sea gypsy I have has Futures boxes for the sidebites so I can only use rear quad fins in them. I have more fin trickery up my sleeve before I'm done with it. It's still a good board design. I just dig the Tajens with the flex fins. Doesn't mean anyone else will.
Surfed my 7' Tajen for the first time with the Webber flex twins and a KS red knubster in well overhead point waves this morning.
Up until now I'd only used the Webber twins in the 6'6" but not the 7'er.
I was going to sell it since I now have a Sea gypsy 7'er as well. Even went so far as putting it on Gumtree.
But and here's the clincher...those Webber twins just light that board up for me. It feels good as a quad or with Sanctum Modii twins and a trailer but using the Webber twins in it just make it feels so much better.
Got back in my van post surf and straight away deleted my ad for the board...at this point in time the Sea gypsy is the lesser of the 2 boards for me.
Going to start experimenting with fins a bit more on the sea gypsy to see if I can coax some magic out of it.
So you ARE gonna sell the sea gypsy after two surfs!

You can get some futures based nubsters on Alibaba for about $15.
I got one to use just in case, but don't think I will need it.
A couple of those as biters in place of rear quads might change it up a bit?
Thanks but I have futures nubsters already and the last place I would be ordering something from in this current climate would be Alibaba.
I can hear Macaha cheering from here.

I've got one turning up today, it's gonna sit outside in the sun and rain for a week before anyone touches it.
I reckon the nubsters as side bites with a 9" super flexy single will bring the Gypsy to life. Bites will give it grip and the flexy will give it kick and release. Saw a similar setup on a youtube video last night fitted to an egg. It seemed to give a nice fluid response and ok drive even in the small mush it was being ridden in. The big single in it looked a little too flexy to me but ok for waves being ridden.
Shame it was a foot too short to be in the mid length range.
Just new to this room and loving the midlength discussion. First time poster also, so i apologise in advance for any misdoings.
Looking at getting a midlenght and after some thoughts please.
Im 54 and currently downsizing from 100kg, first goal 95 and stand 170cm. Been surfing since early teens (performance shortboards). Lost my mojo 10 years or so back and quit, but buying a flat water SUP eventually lead me down the path to SUP surfing for the last 5 years in pretty much the same conditions that I used to surf in, without the suckier reefs or crowded angry points for obvious reasons LOL.
Made the switch back to shortboards 6 months or so back, starting with a 6'6 CatchSurf quad foamie 55L, then picked up a 6'8 JS Raging Bull step up 45.7L and lastly a Machado Seaside Quad 6'1 46.5L. Have had some fun waves on them all but for my local beach and surrounds (Wanda, Garie the Gong down to Bawley) Im thinking that a midlength is going to round out my quiver.
I'm at home laying down drawn out cutties, low bottom turns and love to draw 8's all day if possible:) So looking for a mid that will get me there.
From what i have read here, I'm thinking around the 7'2-7'6 length, with some entry and exit V, (single to double concave?). Not too flat in the rocker for steeper hollower waves but not too much rocker for smaller beach days?
I have already invested in a couple of different keel quad fin sets, so thinking of maybe going with the 5 fin option, to play with quad or twin options. Most here seem to love the 2+1 setup, mmmm what to do?
Also keen on light to medium swallow tails, but don't mind a rounded pin either.
These are my thoughts on what might suit me best so far but open to suggestions please.
Can anyone recommend and surf shops, in the Illawarra region, that have a good selection of mid's?
Have been keeping an eye on here and Gumtree also. If anyone has seen or knows of anything similar to these available anywhere, please let me know also.
The two pics below are of boards that have REALLY caught my eye as lovely specimens of midlenghts.
I think that the top one is only a 3 fin setup though?
Finally picked up my custom Mid Length today YEW:) Its a WizStix 7'0, 21 1/2", 2 7/8". Will be riding it as a quad using Al Merrick PC Aircore Tri-Quad fins. Just a little more time for curing, then its on!
Great board,i came close to buying one after surfing a friends a few times

And??? Did you get her wet yet?
Great thread but lacking images of mid length boards, post them up to educate me.
Maybe we need a clear definition of what represents a midlength?
For me:
Length between 6'4 and 8'6 but it's function in that range of sizing can be vast and varied. I've heard it said that a mid length or to be classified a mid length the board needs to be at least one foot taller than the rider, and able to perform more than one purpose or function (so basically not just a gun).
I like a board that can be ridden old school and with style (not that I've got that), so some walking, nose riding, some drop knee cut backs, trimming and gliding through fat sections, early wave entry, etc.
And at the same time allows you to tap into near short board potential to throw it around a bit (not airs though, nothing against them, just not my thing). But to be able to pull a tighter arch than a longboard, to hit the lip harder and steeper, to slide the tail a bit etc.
It should not feel dull to inputs but responsive and agile with good rail to rail transition, as well as giving the ability to be ridden slow and stable if that's your thing.
And it should perform in anything from 1' slop through to double overhead with multiple fin options to mix and match to what you want to do on the day.
See, an easy board to make
But seriously, I know I banged on about the Cjet but it was as close to that as I could get at the time for my budget. Now having the Webber which was my dream list board I can tell you that it is fairly close to the mark on all of the things I have listed above. Greg put a lot of thought and design knowledge into that beastie including the fin types, placement and flex patterns that would suit it best.
After my last ride on the Webber I would rate it a solid 8.5-9 / 10 on that wish list of what makes a mid length for me. I doubt very much that I will find a board that suits me better overall.
The Cjet I would rate a 7 / 10.
I'm sure that others will have different wish lists and performance objectives for a mid length.
Anything between a shortboard and a longboard
If the nose is too wide its a mini mal
If the tail is too wide its a Simmons or a fish
If the tails too pulled in its a gun or a mini gun
If the nose and tail are both pulled in its a blown up shorty for a fatty
So let's see....
Anything between a shortboard and a longboard - Yep.
If the nose is too wide its a mini mal (or funboard?) - I can live with that, likely the shortest mini mal around at 6'10 though.
If the tail is too wide its a Simmons or a fish - Define too wide? Something like the Kelvinator? What about fat arse McCoy's?
If the tails too pulled in its a gun or a mini gun - So a pin tail or skinny swallow?
If the nose and tail are both pulled in its a blown up shorty for a fatty - I'm a thin fatty but my boards not a blown up shorty, although Webber says it's a short board hidden in a fat outline.
So do I qualify or not?
Please don't send me to the short board room. I promise to behave nicely from now on.
Right so Hydomann and Lacey need to post in the shortboard room
My pleasure is your annoyance
Beautiful work Rattlin, is that a backyarder? If so give yourself a pat on the back brother.
Hard to see exactly but looks like concave all the way through and flattening out in the tail?
What are we looking at here 7'4" to 7'6" x 22"?
Edit: Man that is one superb looking board, some things just look right, and that beast is on the list.
Hydromann
?????
It's called a camera often used to take photos that can be uploaded to sites like this in threads like this we need images
Yeh, back shed. 7'4"x22x3 - you picked the bottom shape. Know every flaw but would never get rid of it. Will be a hand me down along with the others. In fact he's already taken the gun!

First surf on it yesterday, after leaving it for one more week to cure. It's been pumping here since Wednesday. Rode my 6'8 Raging Bull Wednesday and Thursday at my local beach, which is pretty heavy and hollow. Had a couple of potential board snapping situations, but luckily my JS survived:) So the swell had dropped by 1/2 a metre on Friday with pristine offshore conditions and a dredging left sand bar on offer that had been cranking since Wednesday. First wave, I knifed it into a sucky 3 footer, pumped it lightly straight into a highline speed section, released the rail to set up a bottom turn and when on the tail it responded so frekkon well!!!! Wow. It feels solid as a tank without being too heavy. Maybe I've given up on a bit of flex with the strong glass job but it's going to be a rock solid board. It has a really nice glide for takeoffs, feels solid when driving it standing slightly forward after takeoff pumping it down the line, when I shift back just befor a gentle down carve, to set up a bottom turn, it just livens up. Fark, what more can you ask for YEW!!! The raised Stepdeck has a really cool feature that it lets you feel exactly where your feet are when standing near the rail edge. Have chosen not to put a traction pad on it and it feels so good that I'm not going to bother. Second surf on it just now, down the South Coast at Golfcourse Reef and it again went like a dream:) Sets were half overhead, so about 5ft I'd say, and the volume was perfect to stroke into these big beasts and make it through all the sections to the inside reef close out. So two surfs in and it's blowing my mind. The craftsmanship was well worth the cost and wait. I think it will perform well to the max size that I'm prepared to surf these days ( around 8ft).Tomorrow morning is looking to be epic conditions for the left point that I traveled down to surf, so hopefully it will be in the 5-6ft range with the odd bigger bomb. Im so rooted after the last 4 days of surf, but with the world going crazy, I dont care!!!
If anyone wants to know more about where I got it from, I'm happy to put you onto the Wizard.

Stoked for you man. So good when what you actually envisage the board doing exceeds your expectations.
I would love that machine in a 6'8 and around 43L.
Functional art right there.

I have 3 boards between 7ft and 8ft. Most recently I order a mid-length of my local shaper requesting a more high performance shape. I had all of the above in my mind with a fancy decal or paint job. Thinking this will be the one special board like out of Morning of the Earth or something like that.
4 weeks later I get a text from my shaper "your minimal is ready to pick up" !!!
And for what it is worth it goes unreal and I can't get off it.

Thinking this will be the one special board like out of Morning of the Earth or something like that.
4 weeks later I get a text from my shaper "your minimal is ready to pick up" !!!
And for what it is worth it goes unreal and I can't get off it.
I'm the poor cousin surfer who can only afford one board, my 6'10 Webber.
Rippa that your shaper got it right for you, enjoy the ride.
