These Hanaleia quads work great too. Out there fins with an inside concave.
Love bonzer side runners. They really work well in a 2 + 1 set up on many boards I have tried them in.
New Trim Machine...
Shaped by me (board no4) but glassed by a buddy who did a WAY better job than I can ever dream of doing.
Fins by Raido are a match made in heaven, really loving the controlled flex of the K-Fiber 8" and the small bonzer stabilizers are so good when it gets more critical.
First surf today in some shoulder high backhand racetracks was a BLAST!!!
Really stoked with this one, here's a few pics of the journey...
CJ Nelson Outlier 7'er.
The Sanctum 9" flex fin is teamed up with some FCS bonzer side runners. Used the larger ones as the tail is a wide one.
The 7'6" and 8'er Outliers have a fair amount of feedback on them to be found but the 7'er with its wider tail is a bit sparse when it compares to clips, reviews and the like but I like the wide, stubby planshapes and so hope to give this a whirl soon and see how it goes.
I know Andy doesn't think much of the Sanctum single fin he had but don't know which template he had but I have run this in my 9' Paulownia/cork board and it felt just fine in that. Haven't seen Jim (not his real name) from Raido out at my local lately since we have plenty of swell.
Ok...Rolled up to my local point and it's 4-6' of swell from Cyclone Cody. Bugger it might as well go and explore its upper limits. Got lucky on the paddle out and so it was relatively easy, which is a good thing considering the nose width and its thickness making it a chore to duckdive. Noticed I had to lie back a little further aft on the board than I normally would otherwise the nose tends to push water. Moved back a tad and all good. As soon as I got out the back a good sized one rolled through and straight into it. Take the drop and into the bottom turn and could feel the forward rail drift but I control it and it goes mach speed across the face. Do a down carve which turns into a layback as the tail drifts. Even with the 9" Greenough template fin set another inch further back than in the pic below and the large bonzer sides the tail is still letting go due to its width. I have the opportunity to spin and go on another medium sized one while paddling back out and it's bar of soap drifty but super fast speed across the wave. Figure upper limit of the board with that fin configuration at least is established so head in and grab my 8' balsa Sunova 8ball and back out to catch some bombs. Can't wait to ride the Outlier in 2-3'ers. Sure it will be fun.

Howdy folks, happy Friday !!
Anyone had any experience with a JR/Harvest Twin Pin?

I bookmarked this board the other day. Looks ace. The clips I have seen of CJ Neilson on the Outlier make it look fun as.
Great ride report. Looking forward to the 2-3 foot ride report.
Do you reckon she's a keeper?
Is that in the Thunderbolt construction?
Rode the Outlier with the upright side bites yesterday. Local point and swell had dropped to a fun 3' and mid tide going into high for the session.
Definitely a lot better control compared to the Bonzer sides in the smaller waves on offer. Board shone with its down the line speed and I was able to turn it with confidence. Had a few instances where lost the tail on hail Mary foam climbs trying to beat sections which were basically un-makeable.
But others where I timed it right and made it.
Ordered a 9" fin in a more upright template which I should have in a day or two to try. Figure if it makes the board feel even better it will be worth it.
Yes it will be around for a while for sure.

I highly recommend the tolhurst mid6 it's such a great clean planshape and is super fast with quads in it.

Thanks for the recommendation, appreciate it. Great looking board and how good does Harley surf it. makes me drool. On further research it seems the Mid 6 is a bit more back foot and performance focussed than suits me. like a stretched shortboard. I'm after something that trims really well when standing forward of centre, not sure if the Mid 6 does that compared to other boards with a bit more flow?

I've heard nothing but positive things about the ride reports on the outlier, seems like a really nice neutral board, a great allrounder. The only downside is they are very "floaty" so they dont like to dd and that also creates a different "feel" on the wave. Did you watch the review by Surf Craft Union?
Personally I prefer poly boards and how they ride in the water. These boards that sit in the water a bit more tend ride better in forward trim...
Some other great mids for forward trim are the Christenson Flat Tracker and Flat Tracker mk2, deffinatlety worth consideration... The Lovemachine 7'10" Hayley Pin will also be a baller but I reckon they are 6 months away.
This is a really nice story on the Andreini Vaquero, comparing one of his original versions with a current day version of the board.

You and I are more to opposite ends of the spectrum and after different feels on the waves I reckon Andy. Mean that in a totally neutral way. I ponied up for that Raido fin and put it in the Outlier as a single the other day. Caveat: waves were lame but it felt like I was dragging kelp with it...kinda like you remarked about a Modii fin but the Modii fin I have (Greenough 4A template) has no such problem. I've run the Outlier with a 10" FCS Clique fin as a single which felt very good.
I have the Raido in there to run with some sidebites so hopefully it will work much better as a 2+1. I reckon due to its float from its high amount of foam it responds well to a higher amount of fin area (and the 7'er has a wider tail than the longer ones).
Duck diving the Outlier is a matter of angling in the nose to get the initial depth. It is a lot of foam in a relatively short board though.
I've owned a Christenson flat tracker 2 and it was without a doubt the most disappointing board purchase I have made in recent memory. Despite plenty of online stuff about it being so good I found it had only one speed which frustrated me no end. Entirely too "retro" in its performance. Bought it new and took a big loss when I eventually sold it, which took a very long time.
The Outlier on the other hand has a spiciness about it that is entirely engaging and it is so fast when it needs to be.

Thanks for the input. Agreed, the Outlier gets excellent feedback and is reportedly great fun to surf.
I am aok with floaty and like the feel of EPS boards, and prefer the durability - it would be great for traveling in Thunderbolt Tech. It is a boat load of volume at 57 litres so duck diving difficulty is a serious consideration but I reckon it would be super fun and ace at my local beachie - once out the back ;).
I did see that review. That is the longer single fin shape. He didn't connect with it and sounds like he's after something different to me.
It is hard getting it right when buying boards without seeing them in the flesh. Even harder when the different sizes are a different shape like with the Outlier.
Ah right. I didn't realise that. Good to know and will keep that in mind, cheers.
I saw a vid of CJ on Instagram riding the 7 and the turning and forward trim speed looked magic and very appealing to me. I like that CJ is a longboarder developing the odd mid length.
Thanks for the heads up. The Christenson's don't appeal but I will check out the Love Machine Hayley Pin. Cheers

Thats definately very possible, I'm very passive on the wave. I'm just looking to find that perfect trim spot and cruise, maybe a big carve or cutback as the section presents but yeah, very laid back...
With the fin, thats not the Raido fin I was reccomending btw. I was reccomending the K-Fibre which is a 4a template. Thing goes unreal if you like a stiffer but really responsive flex pattern.
Looks like you have the Hull Flex, these are designed to surf at the front of the fin box and have much looser flex. Really designed for displacement hull boards like a liddle. They work well when you are surfing the front third of the board and riding off your front foot, not great for back foot surfing. That board prefers a wider base and bit more fin, CJ goes even bigger, I think 9" plus on his.
The issue with the Modii was it was really heavy, it might have been a faulty batch as it seriously weighed about double any of my other fins, very strange.
The Outlier is just a design that makes sense. The outline, the hull, the flat rocker, the volume distribution are things that are really simple and we know work. Its basically an Andreni Vaquero or a Velzy Egg with thicker rails, more float and bit of vee through the tail, its very similar to where Salty ended up after years and years of subtle refinement although his has finer/harder rails and that guy is a real perfectionist, he hand crafts guitars and violins as well as building boards and boats...
And seems that design works either in the floatier/more zippy thunderbolt tech but it also works unreal in poly if you want something more cruisy, more forward trim.... Its WAY easier to surf than the Lovelace though i'd say less rewarding...
I'm loving my 7'10" self shaped so much i'm going to knock out a 7'6" that will also be a bit thinner in the tail/rails as my 7'10" and the 7'10" becomes my small/mellow wave board although it does like some juice...
CJ usually runs a 9.5" G10 Involvement fin by Flying Diamonds on his Outlier. G10 as it is stiffer and a narrower fin than the regular glass fins.
If it's really small he sometimes changes to a 9.5" G10 Parallax Fin by Flying Diamonds.

.Andyroomac, thanks for posting that vid, wow,it took me back to surfing an AndreiniI hull about 15 years ago,a surfing buddy was into all things Californian and had an 8.0 sent over,it was the fastest ,smoothest, loosest, best paddling board I have surfed! I should have bought it off him, funny thing was I really had problems with cutbacks,as I was used to stepping back to cutback!(hulls don't like that) with there forward fin placement.
Funnily enough you should mention this pure hull Achilles heel as my local point was firing today.
7/10 and 3-5' on the surf report.
Did a high line into a super long cutback on a set wave on the Outlier (2+1) that got compliments from the crew that were paddling with front row seats when I got back out to the line up after the wave. Maybe the answer is a less extreme hull bottom as Ryan Engle does on the CJ Outliers.
Yes cuttlefish for some, the thing that really impressed me was the the surfer doing full round house cut backs on a full blown hull! stoked to hear you are getting your board wired, that's a great feeling, and it will reflect in your surfing
Unfortunately not all glory...Ha ha. Got pitched trying to high line a section on a shortboard yesterday while surfing beachbreaks. Flung unceremoniously into the flats. Felt like I'd broken my ribs I hit that hard. That was also highly entertaining for those paddling out. Almost didn't paddle out this morning due to the pain. Advil fueled and out I went.
Those Rastas are quite large so heaps of bite and drive. I reckon you'd like the Machado quad keels in that board. I found them just as fast as twins and with more drive and a solid feel to the rear.
I just tried the new JS keels in carbon fibre. Very slick and very quick, also very knifey and sharp.
Trying the FCS2 Mod Keels in the 7'0 CI mid tomorrow, hoping she goes well.
Keep us posted on how she goes with a few different fin combo's CF.
I would just stick with the Widowmaker configuration they supply. I have a few mates with these, really nice safe boards and they have experimented plenty and keep coming back to the 1+2 sidebites. True Ames and Al Merrick built the board and the fins in partnership so they are shaped to work together... and I reckon those guys know what they're talking about... Its also not ideal using twin tabs for twins, can be ok in shorter boards but I wouldn't on a mid, It places loads of stress on the fin boxes and those boards are glassed really light... They are making a twin version but they are fitting futures boxes instead. The only complaint I hear about those boards is the glassing, they ding and get deck compressions really easily but they need to be light to work apparently.
Took your advice Andy and reverted back to the two plus one / widow maker setup for the 7'0 Channel islands midlength.
Had tried the 7" FCS centre with 3.5 Carver side bites and didn't like them. Felt very draggy and little drive, about 2/3 the speed of my Christenson Twin Tracker.
This time I used a 6.5 Stewart raked centre which I knew worked awesome from my mal.
Reshaped the FCS2 Mod Keels into Takayama Halo 4" side bites.
OMG!! Board transformed.
Felt as fast as the Twin Tracker but seemed more manoverable yet fully stable.
Super quick to the lip with tons of drive off the bottom and awesome release and pivot at the top.
Only a couple of surfs in on her and she's a keeper.
Fortunate in that mine seems to be made awesomely, really well shaped and glasses strong.
I agree with your mates who have come back to this fin setup, I think the secret is a low drag centre fin with good surface area and low rake side bites.
Half arsed effort CF ;-)
Did the same, riding high and bottom dropped out as it sucked up on the bank. Board flipped and I came down side first on the fins.
Busted three ribs away from the soft tissue, damaged my liver and kidney with hematomas and bruising.
Six weeks no surfing, only now just getting a few soft ones in.
Love my Takayama Halo side bites, but they sure live up to the name bites.
And no, Advil didn't let me go back out

Yikers! Glad you're ok and back (gently) in the water - ouch

Cheers Surf1ng, on the mend.
Liver is still in a bit of a bad way though as it was still recovering from a dugite snake bite.
Nothing sunshine, fresh air, salt water, and time can't fix.
