Heads up, your gonna get flammed, just don't take it to heart.

Personnaly I have owned a SBWH Carbon Jet mid length, and loved it.

Quality was great, rode very nice, price was awesome etc.

But there are those in this place that detest any China import over an Aussie made board.

Their arguments to me are mute from a value for money perspective, and from a performance standing the boards go very well.

However from a loyalty to buy Aussie perspective, I get their position, buy local and support locals.

Depending on where you are it might be just as economical or close to it to look at a Clear Water as an entry level (not that their boards are only entry level, just a hell of a lot cheaper than a Mctavish).

CW have a good range and are Aussie built, they are also a little more refined in the shapes, rails, rocker, concaves etc. All important things in a mid length or long board.

Price point the are around 1/3 again on SBWH prices (barring SBWH fire sales at below landed cost just to shift product).

And then there are your local shapers, have a look on Gumtree for shapers who will talk to you about what you want etc. and shape a board to suit. They are really well priced even against SBWH, but none of the fancy gimmick stuff like carbon patches etc. Just good old fashioned well made product.

Thanks Hydroman. I definitely understand, but at my age and limited ability, especially with two new knees, I just cant justify the $. Will def take a look at the CW

No question that you can buy two SW boards for the price of one. Hell, even a 10' NSP will cost you a cool grand (Note: I also have an old 10'2" NSP that I bought used - pretty much the board I learnt to surf on. It's actually a great, bullet-proof board).

With SW boards, fair chance you'll end up buying two. Mine is one of the softest boards I've owned (although others may have had different experiences).
Now, if this is your first foray into longboarding, that might not be a bad thing. You might grab a 10er and decide you want 11' or 9', nose-rider vs log vs HP etc. However, you do say 'moving to longboards full time', which might imply you already have, or have had, a longboard or two in the past - so you might really know what you want.

While I don't think you can go too far wrong with dropping $750 on the Bronze (in the context of a new board), take a serious look at what is out there used. Firstly, if you can find a used 10' bronze whaler at a better price, win! And if you can find a decent, used 'quality' 10 footer for around the same price, also a win.
Further, if you don't have a whole lot of experience with longboards, I wouldn't recommend dropping $2k+ on a 'quality' board that you might not actually like.

Cheap ain't good and good ain't cheap.

It's like Ozito tools from bunnings sure they kinda suit a purpose and may get the job done but they aren't top quality. You end up paying more in the long run IMO. If you know what you want then but the best you can afford. I have boards from the 60s that are still as good as the day they were put on the shop floor.
Personally I'd be looking for good 2nd one from a decent shaper on Gumtree.

Yes Lacey. An entire board can be made from Aussie materials. Blanks, glass, resin etc.
Have a look at Pieter he uses all Aussie stuff and priced very competitively

so calm your farm no need to call people kooks and wish Carona on them

You get what you pay for ............. If price is an issue, talk to CW, jack knight or even Stuart Smith, they will make you a no frills surfboard. The advantage for you is their decades of experience plus you will have a chance to talk story and have a connection with the board. You won't get that at the SBW
