Watched a bit of that last Quiksilver Pro heat of the day, Parko vs Dion Atkinson. Yep, Parko deserved the win, but Dion had this one long, beautiful wave with such great flowing powerful moves, about 27 of em, that got something like a 6.3. If he'd done just two fins-out snaps he probably would have got a 7. I get what the judges want, but geez . . . Still, a great comp and more fun to come.

I reckon really big carves in the pocket look 1000 times better than some snap . Big power turns are the best!

A hang ten beats them all!

It's always good to see some passion but at the end of the day the priority rule exists. Whether the move was deliberately seeking an interference call only a thousand NRL type replays will tell.. I'm sure KS pulled the same priority move on a barrelled Parko last year. At interview Parko said it's in the rules and that he probably would have done the same. I couldn't see KS being as gracious.

yes I agree - but the Kelly one was different - he did not try and take Joel out to get an interference he just wanted to surf the wave that he was entitled to. I think that ADS went for the interference intentionally - he could easily have made that wave and kept out of JF's way - thereby getting the wave and not the interference. He played by the rules but did so at the limit of fair play in my most humble opinion

I agree Ted. But I also guess they should now always straighten out/bail as soon as they see the other surfer is going for the wave . . . although in this case it may have been hard to see - he dropped in like a ninja.
It's going to be a big day for both the Quikky and Roxy Pros today!

If it is a deliberate move to get an interference call it brings an nasty dimension to 'competition' hope they draw each other at Marg river or at least on adjoining seats on the plane going over

Steph was on fire to dominate the Roxy final. . .
. . . Parko's semi final was mind-blowing. Now for the final. Yew.

The brash you upstart Medina vs the classic old stylist Parko. It's like Tom the Teacake vs Ted the Kiwi!

How nice was it to see such a big happy smile after her victory - it seemed to go on for over 5 minutes. She looked super casual on a few of her waves. her style has really developed nicely. I think Carissa Moore will be the one to beat this year. These two will be neck and neck - they are well in front of the others I reckon.

I am still finding these commentators dull - they are reluctant to take a position on a waves score before the scores comes from the judges. Pussies. Also they are so biased to the favs all the way through the comp - never really recognising the other opponent.

Old age (not that old!) and treachery will always beat youth and exuberance. Besides - you could always pull an ADS on him. Meanwhile Gabriel wins by doing the same thing over and over vs Parko riding the waves creatively and perfectly from behind the rock - i am spewin'.

Yep agreed. I think Carissa is the one to beat. But Steph's surfing on the rail - she was carving today - shows she is ready to contend again. (Soz about straying away from the Chicks thread BTW). What a great day of surfing all round.

Unlikely mate! Like you, just a soul surfer, with the odd comp in between!

An unfair comparison their wavelength, I much prefer parko style surfing than Medina's!

And again, noserides still look ten times better

If you get sick of the Quik pro you can always check out the noosa lb comp. On live everday from about 2 and then the replay is on YouTube.

And I agree wavelength, that wave of Dions wasn't a 6, it was perfect point surfing, all style, speed and flow.

I have surfed with Asea - he used to rip - not sure now that he has become a weekend farmer

I recall an interview with the one and only Richie Benaud man years back where he said that as a TV commentator you need to add to what the viewer is already seeing. I totally agree. The surfing comps expend their energy talking through each move. As viewers we can already see that. Please take some time fellas to add to my visual experience not ruin it. Listening to most of these blokes is like listening to a radio commentary of the cricket ball by ball or the league on the wireless. Time to step it up fellas.

Fair enough . . . make that a brash upstart noserider? Just kidding mate. I like your style. I hope you checked out this thread of Ted's, made me think of your vids/pics and where you may want to go with your surfing: www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/Surfing/Longboarding/Bob-Sink-The-Trial-and-Error-of-Ryan-Burch/

Amen brother. Now I am cranky again. But it's the same stupid scoring that just ripped off Parko in the final. Grrr.

Now I'm going to watch the Noosa LB comp and mellow out.

What on earth is this doing in the longboard forum...(a) surfing shouldn't be a competive sport...(b) its the longboard forum...(c) surfing shouldn't be a competive sport.

surfing is art, individually interpretive as such not open to others justification.

Agreed ^^^. It also irked me when they interviewed the previous heat winner right through the live action. Sometime the interviewee even stopped talking to watch and comment on some great ride. Still, we have come a long way from (maybe) seeing it in the next day's paper.

Yep. That is a great point, Stuk. (Except I'm not sure where that leaves threads about longboard comps? )
I guess i wondered what the longboarders thought about the SB comp and how the judging valued some things over others, I don't give a rat's what the shortboarders think. Glancing down the page I see threads about beer, cricket, driving, NRL, AFL. Maybe the LB room can also work as a place for longboarders to talk to each other about all sorts of stuff that is sometimes part of the daily life of a longboarder.

Yep acknowledge your point, maybe a bit of tiredness, just driven straight through from Brisbane, 9 hours, I still hate the thought of competitive surfing LB , SB or anyB. I guess it is part of the human condition, the drive to succeed over others, it is afterall what has positioned the human race as the pre-eminent predator...just ask the WA premier
