It might be an old topic but I was wondering what the opinion was of changing fins..I just changed mine and a totally different board..for the better
Did I say I like Gloss
I just changed up the fin on my log.
Was running a Greenough 10" 4a then changed it to a 11" Salty Merchants CJ Nelson Hatchet.
The board is completely different - especially when attempting to stay stable on the nose.
Definitely more nimble with the Greenough - but nimble and log are not two things I need in the same sentence.
Good topic Surfbroker... i have been a bit slow to appreciate just how much a change of fins can change a board and even give it a new lease of life. I reckon you are on the money. (And it's cheaper than changing boards!)
Yes great topic and your right a fin can make a missive difference sometimes for the better.
Leashess,I've been eyeing those CJ fins for my log which is coming with a gg fin.
I've got two fins on the way for a couple of boards they will both be 7.5 to run in the back of my evo2 and splice boards.
Just bought an Island Fin Co 7.5" from Josh @ Wetfins - itching to try her out

Looks nice surfbroker, I'm currently running 5.5 inch fins on my LB which feels good on it. Wanna try it with my larger centre fins, might have more hold when I'm trying to nose ride. A friend was saying the week before last he likes small centres for big waves & large fins for small waves which was interesting coz I was thinking the opposite way. I found that when I was drawing a line with a larger fin & I'll have a go at explaining my thoughts but dunno if I'll make any sense. I felt like with a bigger fin, the line I wanted to take felt different, I felt like I had to angle less parallel to the wave to trim at maximum speed which was actually not as fast. This was because a smaller fin didn't hold so much, it allowed some slippage or less hold so I can angle more parallel to the wave. Then coz the board is fitting better into the curve & I should add here...fitting into the curve of the beachies I'm usually riding at that size. I'm able to ride faster, get up on the nose easier & go for a quick floater when waves shut down in less time with smaller fins on my LB.
Dunno if that makes any sense, I guess I could have just said small fins generally feel better for me
Mac - I spoke to Lach at Salty Merchants - he was super helpful lad, great customer service.
When the fin came I freaked out - I felt like a naïve young girl who went home with Ron Jeremy. The fin was HUGE - however after a few runs, it performs well and is very manoeuvrable considering...

Should be here later in the week mate but will do
Yeah, I run two different fins on the Log.
1st one is a my 10' Captain Fin Mitch Abshere, thing is super stable and awesome for stability getting to the nose. Its deff my go to and goes awesome.
2nd is my 11' Alkali rake, my go to if the waves are a bit bigger with some nice wall, has amazing whip when you've got the wave to do some big carving turns. Not as stable but has awesome hold once you get there... and looks the shizzzz!!! and gotta say the quality of these hand made babies is the best I've seen...
I think I'll probably update the Captain fin to the Alkali equivalent down the track, purely to support the local quality craftsman...
Now enter Roy to tell us all how wrong we are and sell us some his magic 3d printed monstrosities
They get some good reviews on other forums so they might not be that bad.

got a set of thems. did use them in a 7'2 666 fishy number.
I personally feel more can be done matching and mixing thruster set ups.
evo2 was soooo much better with a s9 centre and m7 fcs sides then the 2 plus one.
really 2 plus one is a trainer setup
and don't believe you have to have a single to nose ride.
that's just comp rules.
thrusters give you a more all round performance ride with some nose action too
That Alkali fin is unreal - I was wanting one if their fins. Emailed them - no reply.
Unfortunately really as they look unreal.

My 10' log currently has a fin box witha 10"dolphin fin. I purchased the board second hand. The original owner had the board custom made by Matt Keane in Brisbane with a glassed in hatchet fin similar to your CJ Nelson. He found that other than places like Noosa first point and the pass at Byron, where it is point and shoot, it was too hard to turn. He then had a fin box put into the board and fitted it out with the 10" Dolphin fin. As a result I can ride the board in my local point which requires some cutting back and also in the local beach breaks. So nimble as you put it can be useful as well when riding a log, depending on your local conditions.

Sounds like it's horses for courses.. a while ago used Futures with a little hatchet fin at the back of my Nugget and they are brilliant, much better than the std 3 fin set up.
I found the DVS pictured a real change from the norm, they could be used as a thruster set up..but I don't have one....at the moment

That's really strange, I find their service to be amazing. I actually emailed Melissa this arvo about an extra fin box screw and base and I reckon she replied in about 5 minutes and popped a few in the mail foc.
Which email did you use? Pm me and I'll shoot you her email if you like...

Apparently teacake can nose ride a quad, it's big in modern Longboarding he was telling me.
It's more a matter of style, a big single means bigger drawn out turns whereas a thruster will still noseride but will allow more radical turns... Which is just not my thing
just ordered this 10.5
And I own one of these, went sick on my 9'4", turns amazing and so fast, has great balance and stability and you deff won't be disappointed... I sold the board but kept the fin for when I can afford my next project, a 9'1" speed machine, big Turner not for noseriding...

Andy - I emailed through the contact us section on their site. This was months ago now... Nothing came back from them - Emailed Salty Merchants received a reply that day and follow up emails answering other questions.
Not knocking the Alkali fins at all, they look unreal....
Mac - I was checking out that Thomas model fin at Deus in Byron, very nice looking fin.

Must have been some mess up, things can occasionally get missed. I did the same and received and immediate response and now just email Melissa direct, I own the Thomas, Rake and the Ryan Lovelace for my 7'er and will likely buy a pivot when they do the next run of Rainbow although I really love the feel of the Lovelace which is Volan, so I may just get the Pivot in Volan...
