hope you've started training mate. 12 days @ 5hrs? per day in the water takes its toll. Ahh things we do for fun eh!!!!! always a bummer going from wearing a wettie most days to ripping ur guts apart on wax in warm water.
yea I have but I hate swimming, I do a bit of indoor rock climbing as well thats the best cross training you can do for surfing I think, balance + pulling yourself up a wall is sorta like trying to paddle in lead
hahaaaa yer cheers Marty. Really looking forward to getting barrelled of my head at Lacerations and Shippies AGAIN this year. let the good times roll!!!!
Just wondering what's the go with malaria at these land camps in the Mentawais? When we went there I was told its one of the main causes of death with Surfaid working hard to fix the problem. It was ok on the boat as the mozzies don't go out to sea but the jungle was still full of them so I was just wondering how bad the problem really is?
They recomend that you take the tablets with you but not take them?? I dont get it, but the tablets are sposed to make you sick as well, so I dont really no. They have all the mozzie nets ect and have a specific time when everybody puts repellant on ect so to me it looks like prevention is way better then cure. Also you actually have to have a malaria carrier on the island as the mozzies dont live long so the need to bite sumone with it b4 you can get it, I think thats how it works, Im no expert or doctor or english student looking at my spelling
Hey Doggie, I am also goin to the Mentawai's in Sept. First day aboard the good ship Tengirri will be the 25th and hope to have 12 days of the best waves of my life. This will be my first trip to the Ments and will be taking a 6'4", 6'8" and a 3rd board that i have'nt decided on yet. Would also be keen to hear from anybody thats been and what boards worked best over there? Keep an eye out for the Tengirri as i'm sure it will pass through the Wavepark area, say hello, i'll be the tall skinny bastard on the wrong side of 40 hopefully not gettin smashed. Hoppy.
Kearnsy right. I just got back from the Mentawais, surfed for 10 days straight upto 7hrs a day, my ribs got rubbed raw and turned into ulcers from being in the water so much. Same thing happened to my knees from the tail pad. I'd recommend ripping off your tail pads and/or putting some elastoplas over the areas where you expected to get chaffed (knees and ribs).
On malaria, if I was staying at the camp I would take the malaria pills. I didn't take them cause I was on a boat but the few times we went to shore we did see some. Apparently Malaria can last for years. There is a bonus to taking the malaria tablets (doxycycline), they can prevent infection from reef cuts.
Yom might have a few dramas landing in Denpasar with more than 3 boards. I made the mistake on my first trip and cost me $$$ and an hour at customs.
I dont know if its still strict , just the heads up guys thats all....
Im only taking three 6,3 Al Byrne 6,5 LSD 6,8 Simon Anderson that should be enough I think?? To much weight otherwise..
